My preference was to trade tapes, not necessarily Jewel tapes. One person did this (we were also trading for another tape anyway, so she got two and I got two, and we each paid our own postage) and most of the other responses I had never even bothered to answer me on it. Which I confess struck me as slightly rude. Other than that, I asked my leaves to mail me their blank plus return postage and some sort of suitable packaging. One leaf offered me an extra blank tape for my trouble, and this made me feel so nice that the next time I was leafing on another list I offered my branch the same thing. He too seemed pretty pleased. On private trades, it has been my experience on other lists that some people will ask for a second blank tape. I know that on some lists this is de rigeur, and that on others it sends people ballistic. I sort of think it's a reasonable request, WHEN NOT IN A TREE CONTEXT. Making a stand-alone offer you may get dozens and dozens of requests, which is a real chunk of time spent taping the same thing over and over. And since no two tapes seem to be the same length, there is some supervision required to make sure the first seconds of the second side don't get lopped: IOW, it's not a fully automatic process that can happen while you're out of the house, or at least not in all cases. I suspect that, as in most things, being reasonable is the key. The only tree thing that has pissed me off to date: when trading tapes with someone, I specifically said I'd be using XLII-S tapes and asked for these or the TDK equivalent in return. And got some cheapo Scotch tapes, which sound OK but won't last--they never do. Last thing: I don't recall who is handling the re-organization of the Seattle tree, if anyone, but I can take an additional four leaves. This is NOT a request for all of you to deluge me with email! If you post in response to this asking for tapes, I will NOT make you a copy even if you are ASSIGNED TO ME AS A LEAF! I repeat, do NOT fill my mailbox with hundreds of messages! Whew! I don't care how much of a newbie you are, the answer is NO! But I'd like to hear from the organizer, if one exists. I have to check my time commitments elsewhere, but I might even be able to take on another 10 or so if there are more J-cards out there--I don't think the pink will copy very well, although I haven't tried it yet. Although I am not gay, I was treated with the same respect as every one else. You would't believe it. Not even one person yelled out and called me a fat, ugly, straight, heterosexual sub-human. I didn't even try to fit in. No make-up, no high heels, not even a blond wig. I guess I could have worn some leather. It was real nice to be a minority and to be treat like everyone else. The only thing that bothered me was no one even tried to make a pass at me. Finally as I passed a booth raising money for AIDS research, this guy said, "to pass, you need to pay a dollar toll or give me a kiss". I gave him a dollar. He was probably trying to show me he wasn't prejudice. I'll bet a lot of the people at the parade learned how to treat others with respect by listening to some of the good music I mentioned above. I read Ryan's post and can appreciate his frustration with having tons of requests for dubs though. Ryan, here's what most of us do: - - Trade one-for-one with the people who have other shows to trade. You'll end up with a nice collection of shows which you should really appreciate if you're a Jewel fan. - - If you don't have time to do dubs for people with nothing but a blank to trade, why not see if someone else would like to tree it. There are people who don't mind doing this for the sake of contributing to the spirit of the list. Allison, you can always post a request on the list to see who else is willing to trade this show in EDA style. When doing straight trades.. everyone (almost anyway) knows how that's done.. same # tapes.. with music on 'em that each wants.. pays for each postage.. both use same amount of money (basically) for the transaction and both win out by having more music they enjoy. :) When doing nice copying for those w/o the benefit of anything to trade, I generally work by the rule of that if someone wants a few tapes.. no prob.. just the SASE thing works out great.I don't mind making 1-3 tapes for those angels in need. However, when an angel is in much desire (as I have been) of starting a decent sized collection, I am not so eager to sit and copy tons of tapes for someone just to send 'em back to them. Most people won't even consider making a big set like this (20+ tapes at times), but I figured out what seems to be pretty fair. I've seen people ask for a blank per boot.. and I think that's a little steep, I don't even accept it as a valid ofer if someone offers me that. I don't need it.. but I often ask for halff the amount. This does seem rather sick when I get 9 tapes out of a trade, but considering I spend time to copy 25 90 minute tapes, I don't think it's unreasonable. Anyway.. so I believe it is not wrong to profit a little bit out of the trades as long as you are reasonable and you're not the only one who's satisfied with the transaciton in the end. :) And just because someone makes an over-generous offer does not mean that it's fair! :) Be nice and make it more reasonable ;) Gerrit - -- "Thank you for sending me a copy of your book. Why do so many people say that dubbing tapes takes so long. All you have to do is set the machine up to copy a side, then go away. When you happen to walk back into the room and the side is done, you flip the tapes. All told it takes about 3 minutes of your actual time to dub a tape. If you write the setlist down for the recipient, you might add another 5 minutes to your actual time. Some people seem to suggest that they put the tape in to copy and are for some reason forced to sit there and watch it.
