This seems quite uneven to me since 1) the person is paying for ALL the postage and 2) you don't pay for the blank you're copying on. The only thing you're donating is your time to copy the material you have. Here's my version of the Even Exchange: You send me a tape of what you have, I send you a tape of what I have. We each take care of the postage and the tape on our ends. > I then added the 'Double Blank' option because I realized that many > people on the list are in my same situation -- just starting to collect > bootlegs. This seems to me to be *more* unfair then > sending two blank tapes for a trade -- at least now the person can join > the trading cycle that he or she was stonewalled from before. The solution to this is JUST COPY FOR THE COST OF TAPE AND POSTAGE. No extra blanks are necessary! I think if you wanted to copy something for someone with a minimum of cost (only my time) then all that person needs to send is 1 blank tape and return postage. Most people who trade extensively use type II cassettes. Last time I checked these tapes usually run over 2$. That's a 2$ per person that you are making. That's not the spirit that I like in trading. I've started many ppl's collections already using the above method. I only ask for the number of tapes needed to copy what the person wants and return postage. Anything more than that is turning a profit. > You may have already noticed that I said I gave 3 methods of trading -- > the third was not posted to the list because, frankly, it throws this > whole controversy out the window: > > >The "Other Offer" > >----------------- > >If you have another offer for me that doesn't fit one of the above two, > >contact me via email. Once again, This is not non-profit. A second tape isn't necessary. I pose an offer the common good. I'll copy every tape I have of Jewel for anyone if they send me only 1 tape and return postage. Anyone need to be started? E-mail me back!. > The only motivations I had for making this offer were to a) get true fans > a tape they can enjoy, and possibly brighten a bad day, and 2) increase > my **EMPTY** collection of Jewel bootlegs, the artist that we all adore! May ask what tape this is for? As I said above I'm willing to start people's collections. Even yours! > That $10 in postage ruining everything Jewel stands for? Not in your > lifetime. It's not the postage. It's the second tape. If you ask for another tape then I think you shouldn't ask for return postage. The cost to send one tape in the US is $1.01 using a padded envelope. That's well below the cost of a type II cassette. First, everyone's responses to my popularity is bad post made good points, whether you agreed with me or not. The only things I have to comment on are the following. The second album as being different and that being good because change is good. Change is not necessarily good. Examples: remember when Dylan tried to do "Christian Rock"? Or when Springsteen disbanded the E Street Band and replaced them with studio musicians? Or for those less equated with that kinda music, let's look at the alternative scene. Vitalogy wasn't all that bad in my opinion but some of the stuff on there was Pearl Jam just trying to be weird, Ten is still the best album of the nineties so far. For striking in the category of bad change however are R.E.M. and U2. Monster was horrible. Out of Time and Automatic for the People were good, not as good as their older stuff obviously but still good. Monster just sucked. And when did Michael Stipe turn from a quirky rock singer to a bald-headed, make-up wearing, trans-sexual freak? As for U2, Zooropa? AAAAH! Instead of stuff like that on Joshua Tree, Unforgettble Fire, War, and Rattle and Hum, they tried to sound alternative with their computerized sound and lack of instrumentation. Bono greased his hair and got some cheesy sunglasses. What happened to the rock group that played on a rooftop for the Streets Have No Name and rocked out in two of the greatest rock performances I have ever seen at Red Rocks and later at Live Aid. Again, Achtung Baby was good, if not great, but then Zooropa just sucked. And I know there are people out there that actually like these album. You guys are just no where near my wavelength to begin with then. Jewel-related point being, change is not always good, sometimes it is disastrous and alienates true fans. Oh, the other point was that someone commented that we should try to spread Jewel's music as much as possible and blast it from our car stereos when driving along. Is it just me, or is Jewel's best music not loud driving music but stuff you listen to in silence, much like Jewel herself says, about silence being so important in listening to and creating music. Hey, I love Carnivore and the band versions of Race Car Driver and Love Me Just Leave Me Alone, but that's not what I think about when I think of Jewel. I think of her and her guitar and that being enough, anyone who was at Jewelstock will admit that the band stuff was cool, but her solo stuff was much more emotionally touching, and I'm not the kinda guy who is emotionally touched very often at all but, like I've said before, the encores at thursday night at Jewelstock was one of the most emotional moments of my life, I almost cried, and I haven't cried since I was nine years old, honest, if a bit twisted and repressed. That's all. The best point you guys made was that we should all want what Jewel wants. I agree, but hearing her speak about what she wants in contrast to where she is going is what prompted me to post about her popularity being bad in the first place. Who do you know that never changes? No one's life is a straight line. If it were, it would mean you'd never learn, never evolve, never explore other possibilities. That is true whether the change is good or bad. And really, who's to say whether it's good or bad, since a bad spell can often teach us more and bring us to a higher level or better place than a good one. Of course, when a musician changes, it does often leave original fans in the dust. For instance, I used to be a huge Kate Bush fan. But her last couple of albums left me cold. I felt she had become more commercial, more pop-y. But if she wants to explore other musical directions, who am I to say no? I'm sure after 5 or 6 albums in the same style, one becomes a little bored. Or maybe it's a sellout. But it's the person's life, not mine. I think what you meant was "(her) change is not necessarily good (for me)". Then again, sometimes it's great. Your life, your choice. Jewel's life, her choice.
