It's nice to hear from other countries in regards to Jewel. >We've had a person from Iceland write us from time to time, also. You >must be excited about Jewel coming to Australia in September. I wonder >if Canberra will be one of her stops. I wonder, too. Canberra has been ignored by overseas acts for a long time. We're kind of small for a capital and not considered exciting enough, I guess. A population consisting of mainly public servants and a lot of students. But in the last couple of years we've done a lot better concert wise. A lot of much bigger names have appeared here. We have just the venue for Jewel. It's called Tilleys. it's just a little bar but there are loads over artists who love to play there because it has a great atmosphere. Since Jewel is still relatively unknown here, I could just imagine her in Tilleys. Small and intimate enough for someone like her, from what I have heard. > I had a thought that you might agree with. How popular she is, do >people even know who she is, has her tour been mentioned there, that sort >of thing. I could do this. In fact, I made a discovery tonight. I took my little brother and sister to a movie (they are 17 and 14) and I thought I'd play Jewel in the car. I try to convert my sister to most of the music I listen to. As soon as the chorus of WWSYS came on, Fiona said, 'Hey I know this song. I've heard it on the radio and I really liked it.' I was glad to hear that. However, my sister does listen to commercial stations only so that means Jewel is getting air play on commercial stations. I haven't heard her anywhere else. Is this the case in America and elsewhere? I'll keep an eye out for any other signs of interest in her. I did mention her in a room full of girlfriends the other night and I got blank stares. 'Who??' I told them about the mailing list (they laughed and said I should get a life) and I tried to describe her. The best I could do, for their benefit, was Tori on acoustic guitar. I know it's not adequate but it was the best I could do. Don't know if I sparked any interest. They all like Tori so maybe there is hope. > > Thanks for your participation in the list. First, a brief tangent that has always irritated me.... A "sacrafice" is what occurs when you give up something you care for or value highly in enchange for something with lesser or no value. 3 examples> #1)Me - going to school for 6 years at a rather unenjoyable Institute, and then spending the next several years in gopher-tpye work, in exchange, I will legally be a practising architect, which is something I want to do very, very badly. This is NOT a sacrifice. More of a "purchase". #2) Jewel - living out of her car and moving all over the West for several years, in general, not having a very easy time of it all...in exchange, she got to do "all that music stuff" which is why I (and probably several of y'all) have a great deal of respect for her. Again, not a sacrifice. #3) Kerri Strug - aggravating her ankle injury in exchange for winning a gold medal in gymnastics, probably the highest point one can reach in her chosen career/sport. NOT a sacrifice. This was a choice of hers, she valued winning the event over the pain in her ankle... Okay, so it's not a tangent anymore...she wasn't FORCED to complete the second vault, I distinctly heard her coach (Bela Karoly sp?) ask her, "can you do it?" her reply, "I don't know...yes, yes, I can do it." and then she went and did it, and won (read: achieved her goal) I've been having this arguement all week on olympic newsgroups, and to be honest, it was very surprising to hear this from someone, who, describing her decision to move into her car at the age of 18(same age as Kerri), said "I wanted to do something I loved or die." I would've thought Jewel would understand what Kerri was thinking... Well, that was a lot less painful than I thought, I guess I've calmed down since I read over those flame-wars earlier. God, those people are bitter... lighten up, buy a house plant or something... Since Jewel doesn't often post here, I'd like to hear from anyone who shares her point of view on this... chris =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= Chris Hoeh Georgia Institute of Technology gt4678d@prism.gatech.edu College of Architecture http://www.prism.gatech.edu/~gt4678d Atlanta, Georgia, USA =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= There is only one basic human right, P.
