And how far a drive is it from NYC? It's about a 40 minute drive from where 93/95 intersect northeast of Boston, so I'd say it's about a 5 to 5 1/2 hour drive from NYC. As far as Directions, take 95N into New Hampshire and get off at Exit 2. Head east until you hit the ocean, and then turn right. Take the next left, and then turn left onto 'D' street. I'm Tom, from Colorado, devoted to Jewel, and sorely missing seeing her when she came through here. I'm nearly brand-new to this list- I missed Jewelstock, but not the ensuing mailing list chaos. I decided to introduce myself now because I came across something that will probably leave most of y'all salivating. While looking through a CD list at the GEMM site, I came across the Save the Linoleum cd. I was even more excited to find that it was stocked by a store with an address not 15 miles away! The listing is nearly a month old, and it said dj's copy, but if it's still there, I think I can get it. The moral question is, should I, as a new person on the list, selfishly keep this for myself, or should I generously donate it to one of more qualified/experienced members- at a significant profit of course. Don't worry, I'm not that evil. I'll probably make a copy for myself, and trade for Jewel memoirs-buttons, etc. Keep you posted ------------------------------ From: Linus Gelber Date: Wed, 24 Jul 1996 23:44:17 -0400 (EDT) Subject: Photos, Reviews, Press, etc. It's been lovely reading these obsessive and joyous posts; I've been meaning to add to the general clamor, but have been busy this past week or so. Better late than never, I say. After I clear this post, I'll try to write up my own Jewelstock commentary. But first, a few notes about recent stuff on the list: Photos - The record label is just blowing hot air. If the pictures you are posting are YOUR PICTURES, taken with the consent of the subject, you can post them wherever you like, and the hell with 'em: you own the copyright. If they're your pictures of Jewel and Jewel didn't consent, you can still post them, because she is a public figure. I assume that a label rep is generally so jealous of photos scanned from publications or linked from label pages--where the copyright is privately held--that it never occurred to this one that the pictures are yours to do with as you like. There can be no legal repercussions. Steve Poltz - My understanding, from this list, is that he and Jewel were an item and are now good friends. Not that it's any of my business. And not that it's any more of my business than it was a second ago, but after meeting him briefly following the Rugburns' set at Wetlands not long back, I think the two of them must have been a magical couple. Someone posted here that she was too good for anyone. Not too good for Steve, say I. Too much for me, no doubt, but he's pretty magical. Nettiquette - I for one don't mind the many posts marginally connected to Jewel; that's part of the nature of a mailing list. HOWEVER. There are a few souls out there who quote BIG LONG ENTIRE MESSAGES and add a line or two of commentary at the top or bottom. This is big-time bandwidth wasting, and I for one would appreciate it if folks would quote slightly more judiciously. Note that I do not designated myself a Netcop and have no intentions of trying to enforce this. It's just a request. Oh, and to the guy with the .sig file that's three screens of blank space long: that's just rude, knock it off please! Photos again - Someone out there--I forgot to write your name down-- actually caught me on film! This is rare, as generally my vampiric tendencies emerge around cameras (either that or I'm too short to get into the pictures, my theory is that the light takes that extra fraction longer to get to the lens and therefore I miss being in most photos). Sure would appreciate a copy, and naturally I'll pay for it. Reviews - Robert Christgau, critic for the Village VOICE lo these many years, has always been a trend-worshipping troglodyte with his ears far closer to the ground--listening for the latest cool shifts and hipper- than-thou rumblings--than to the music he natters on so jadedly about. He hits a new low this week in his Consumer Guide. He lists Jewel's "Pieces of You" as the Dud of the Month, and says: "Worth ignoring while she was merely precious, she demands our brief attention now that she's becoming overvalued as well. With the possible exception of St. Joan, who at least had some stature, this is the bad folkie joke to end all bad folkie jokes. With her self-righteousness, her self-dramatization, her abiding love for her own voice, her breathy little-girl innocence and breathless baby-doll sexuality, her useless ideas about prejudice and injustice and let us not forget abuse, she may well prove as insufferable as any hollow-bodied guitarist ever to get away with craving the world's adoration. End of story--I hope. C MINUS" I am not able to find an email address for Christgau (who has been offending me for nearly two decades), but the Voice has a Website at http://www.villagevoice.com and the administrative contact for the page can be reached via email at voice@echonyc.com. The Press and Jewelstock - Taking fate into my own hands, which is where I like it, I faxed our local Z100 on Friday the 19th, and said I'd tell them about Jewelstock if they'd promise to play some song other than WWSYS in exchange (which they didn't do). About 15 minutes after I sent the fax, the afternoon DJ read several paragraphs, confusing the details slightly but getting out the free fans-only small-venue concert in Woodstock (she said it was "broadcast on the Internet," some people have no clues), the apology to Dolores O'Riordan (sp?) for making fun of her voice, the fact that Jewel is now recording her second album, the 2.5+ hour set (left out Patty Griffin, who's not on their playlist) and the note that Jewel did not sing WWSYS or yodel at the show. "I guess she's moved on," said the DJ. She also mentioned my name two or three times, which was pretty cool. So it's already been announced, for what that was worth. I think you can get those through Hallmark or through people that cooridinate weddings and such. Just so you know. Also, WHFS (yes those same people that brought you an HFS Christmas and The HFSetival) just put out an album called Just Passin' Through. Just Passin" Through is also a show on every Sunday Night here in the D.C. area. Jewel has been included on the album. Of Course, it's WWSYS. There are also some other really good acts on it as well. If anyone would like one, just e-mail me back and I'll see what I can do.
