Sinjin, did you recruit Fang the Theatre Dog into the Frisbee Guard? Because boy, did he ever do a number on my frisbee. Amy typed: >Don't know if I met you at JS but I did meet Jack (and took several >compromising pictures of him and a dog....). I didn't even realize until Amy, I *WANT* some of those pictures! In fact, anyone who got some good pictures of this incident, please let me know! I assume this was during Jack's comical chase of Fang (my poor frisbee clenched firmly in his jaws) all over the parking lot, and the subsequent tug-of-war that followed. I think the pickle trick worked better than the tug-of-war, but Jack, I appreciate you holding the dog down for me!!! :-) For those of you who weren't there, I tossed a pickle at Fang after Jack had been rasslin' with him for several minutes, and Fang evidently found the pickle a heck of a lot more interesting than the frisbee, because he abruptly let go and went after the pickle. Eric, I seem to recall you taking a picture of my mangled frisbee afterwards... I'd love a copy of that too! And I don't suppose anyone took a picture of Brendan (sp.?) frantically trying to save the frisbee from the Bearsville Beast a second time... BTW, Brendan, drop me a line sometime! It was cool meeting you! Oh, and Mike (was it Mike? and Rielle - OK, I know I mangled the spelling, but it's my best attempt)... e-mail me and say hello! Remember, Jewelstock was a wonderful success not only for us who got to go, but for Jewel and Lenedra too. Lenedra said there will be another one. Maybe not in Woodstock I'm guessing, but I think they'll do something for us. And if it's on the west coast next time, then I'll be the one driving 3 days and sleeping on the picnic tables! Not to pick on Robb, this is only one of several posts I've seen that sound a bit nervous about letting others in on the secret of the Jewel mailing list. But this list started out as an open door to anyone who wanted to come and learn more about Jewel and talk to others with the same interest. It's developed into a group of friends, where we enjoy some major perks like private concerts, great tapes, etc., and I can understand becoming nervous about having people join who would do something to spoil it. But Jewel isn't our secret to keep from others. This should still be a place where new fans can come and join in. I don't think too many people who aren't true fans will put up with the 100+ messages-a-day traffic for long before they unsubscribe, while the real fans will stay with us and make this a better place. So I doubt a mention about it in an article or press release is going to do a lot of harm. In fact, this list attracts and keeps the coolest people, and I wouldn't mind finding a few more EDAs at the next Jewel show I go to. ttyl, Dan - --------------------------------------------------------------------------- DAN STARK danstark@mnsi.net Windsor, Ontario, Canada - --------------------------------------------------------------------------- ------------------------------ From: dozer Date: Tue, 23 Jul 1996 01:36:57 -0500 (EST) Subject: NJC: need info on internet providers hey now i recall talking to one of the rad list members up at jewelstock (who can remember all the names, really, after so little sleep?) about internet providers...i need a new one since my ND account will be terminated next month (only because i graduated)...so anyway, i remember hearing about pipeline, so i was wondering if said list member or any other lister in teh know could send me some info on that particular company, OR...if anyone knows of a good provider that is national (i live in a small town in the hills of VA and even AOL is a long-distance call) and relatively inexpensive (preferably by the month and not hour), please let me know. much appreciation to all helpful EDAs. thanks, dominic Minimal OJC: my boss at the horribly shitty record store that i work at came up with the grand idea to write reviews of CDs to be posted in the store sometime over the spring while i was at school. i guess he figures the numerous mariah carey posters around the store just aren't cutting it, so the small fraction of our customer base that can actually read might benefit from the insights of those so learned in the ways and means of the record industry (meaning the employees). it is now time for a new set of reviews to be posted...since he knows that i would only be reviewing stuff like Guided By Voices, Tortoise (does ANYONE else on this list listen to them? i'd love to know), and Velocity Girl (these are just examples of lesser-known bands that i really like but don't really sell, or are even carried at the store), he made up a list of stuff that is "new" and/or "hot" to review...so i'm doing pieces of you...and i am mentioning in the review that it is older than dirt, but that people should buy it because it's a rad album anyway. and in true indie fashion, numerous potshots are taken at our best-selling artists just to be gratuitously snide and pretentious. i even name-check Doug Martsch in my review. so there. - --------------------------------------------------------------------- Dominic J. Someone mentioned something like this before. While I get sick of people selling jewel stuff (for a profit or not), I think this would be great if operated like the tape trees are (send blank tape). I have a Genesis tribute CD -- not a fan-produced one but a professionally-made one you can buy in stores -- and the concept is really neat. It is a little jarring at first; some of the songs are nearly identical copies, some are way different, and some are very nice interpretations of the original. I planned on reading some of the email from the week before I went to bed, and I'll be damned if I forgot to go to sleep. Must have been all of that driving. I think I only need six hours of sleep every other day now. I skimmed through about 200 in an hour yesterday, but I read (or at least stared at in a daze for a few minutes) every one of the last 387 messages. What an emotional roller-coaster ride that was. At first I was a little angry for some reason (what I had to be angry about I don't know), and then I was a little sad that it had all come and gone. Then I felt stupid as I pondered all of the coulda-shoulda-woulda's. By the time I read Lenedra's letter I was happy with tears that just wouldn't roll. By the end of the stream of letters I had come to terms with my JewelStock Experience. (And also, the pictures on the wall looked, for the the shortest moment, like they were sliding off the walls.) I can not make this detailed, as well as concise, so I will spare everyone and go with concise. I drove from Florida to Long Island, with my little brother riding shotgun. We left 0800 Monday (from Palm Beach) and pulled into my Aunt's driveway (in Smithtown) 0900 on Tuesday. It would have been an even 24, but like James Judd, I missed an exit in Pennsylvania, and ended up in a not so nice neighborhood, where I saw two men trading things (stamps perhaps?) through a window at 0300 in the morning. I'll spare everyone the details of my visit with my dad's side of the family, but I will say this: My grandma is the undisputed senior womens bowling champion of Long Island. I left about 0700 from the Island for Bearsville. I made it there about 1130, but drove past the theater in a half hearted attempt to find Steve's campground. I realized I was fooling myself, and went back to the theater. I saw a few people waiting by the door, but I was a little hessitant to get out of the car. I suffer from a bad case of Rich Melko Syndrome (which is to say I'm kinda shy). I saw someone else pull up and met Pete/Peter/Andy (Is that right?) from Virginia, and Tom from Cali (I think). We strolled behind the theater and stumbled into what (I now realize) must have been a private meeting with the Organizers and Jewel's beautiful Mother. (Sorry Mike) Peter asked me "Are you one of them?" I thought he meant EDA so I said "Yes." To which he replied "Are you with the band or the crew?" At this point I had to set him straight (but thanks anyway). He said he was going back to the camp site, so I said "Lead the way!" (I know, I know, concise.) Let's just say that the campsite wasn't close. I was one of the ones that said what's another 18 miles, so I can't complain. I met a number of people at the campsite, but it was soon time to go back to the theater for the 1400 congregation. This is where I made my fatal mistake. Perhaps I was tired from the 1500 miles I had racked up durring the week, perhaps it was the convincing tone in Steve Ito's voice when he said, "Do you want to ride with us?" Well, Steve and Christine looked like great people (and they are) but halfway back to the theater I realized my folly. I had everything I owned locked in my car. Once I got to the theater I would not be back until it was all over. That meant no shower, no fresh clothes, no camera, no CD, not even a Colin Powell button that I brought for Dean Harris. 1500 miles, and my stuff is locked in my car 18 miles away. It was a bummer, to say the least. So, I will say now, that I didn't plan on wearing the Raybestos Drag Racing T-Shirt the entire time. I felt really bad when the racecar driver incident arose. There I was, flagrantly exploiting motorsports. I could have died (Yes, I am exagerating, but just a little). I was so happy when I heard the lovely Selena mention the word belly-flop. I was all too eager to share the fact that I was the one behind the belly-flop suggestion. It was one of the high points of the day. I talked (sat silently) with Selena's husband, and listened to people introduce themselves, forgeting to introduce myself. And so the day continued. I got to know alot of great people, even if they have no idea who I am. I found myself in line about 1800, sporting a JewelStock T-shirt over one shoulder, and a "Gotta love those Harris Brothers" pin on my shirt. I was sweaty, and smelly, but got a 3rd row set, three to the right off center seat. The show was great. I will not attempt to explain how great it was. It was GRRRREAT!
