After waking up from my coma-like sleep of 20+ hours that I fell into after I walked in the door, I am here to tell all the tale of a college student with an impulse control problem and his little bear from a small town in SW Virginia who traveled all the way up the East coast to see a certain young lady. I tell you now it is huge, much Jewel content, and is detailed. I warn you all now, I am putting out all the gossip, all the dirt, all the love that occurred (I can see it now Liz and Crunch are already turning red) Tuesday night - role play with friends till midnight killing many to get my mind off of JS for the first time in days. late Tuesday night - post till about three working out the final details of the adventure Wednesday morn - classes as usual, but just felt oooohhh so much longer than normal, went home in between them to set the recorder to tape Rosie but had the wrong time (bad TV Guide, bad TV Guide) finally get onto the highway at about 1pm only to run into construction and get stuck on 81 for an hour. somewhere on the way to Charlotesville to meet up with Peter and his better millage car I spot a true red fox in the median of the highway, a good luck sign that proved to be true. pile into Peter's Volvo wagon, thanks again for the ride and what a stereo, and head up the road first seven hours on the road fly by as we listen to Jewel, boots, Dar Williams (?) (check her stuff out), Natile Merchant, Patti Griffin, and such. Talking about the most confusing show on TV, the X-files, movies, and such and munching on RC cola, pretzels (thanks Peter), peanut butter sandwiches (the food of the week) and apples. in New Jersey somewhere: Me (never having been in Jersey before): "Hey what are all those lights, a big city?" Peter: "No the refineries, thank Mr. Dupont" Me: "Eeeaaaawwwww!!!" Stopping for gas and restroom at a Bob's Big Boy and gas station. Go in to use the bathrooms, ash trays right next to the urinals (does this say something about Jersey?). Waiting for Steve make a little bit more than eye contact with a beautiful young woman eating with some friends, but my luck not only is she in another state that I am just driving through but she probably is under 18, jailbait (hey you watch out there Garret and Rachel! just kidding) Get a little bit lost on the Jersey Turnpike, Me: "Hi gay guys in the really old car with lots of stickers" but end up at Steve's campsite at about 1:30 AM okay Steve's Campsite: first impressions, its really dark and WOW look at those stars, can even see the Milky Way, never seen so many stars before in one little patch of sky. Peter goes off to try to conduct business in Japan via his cellular phone, but we're not in a cellular zone. Walk up to the campsite, see a fire burning out, a couple of tents (one really tiny pup tent with the younger Greg and someone else in it), one person (Rich from PA) sleeping on the ground on a mattress, one who has made a tent over one of the picnic table (Garret), and someone (Tom O'Brien) sleeping right next to the fire on the other picnic table. Sit down at the fire with Fuzzy with the plan to either stay up all night or just sleep there, have a tent but just did not feel like putting it up. A few bear bottles, remnants of roasting marshmallows and a little bit of other trash, and a pile of cord wood that three of the group bought (thanks guys). Start stoking the fire for warmth, is the guy on the table awake? Then his pillow falls to the ground. Tom "Was waiting for that to happen" Introduce myself. Tom says they were waiting for us. He falls back to sleep after awhile. After about a half hour or so decide to set up my tent in the dark, isn't as hard as I thought it would be. Lay down with my bear and just about get to sleep, even with the snoring coming from next to me (Tom from CAL.). Then at about 3 am two cars pull up with two rather noisy guys (Crunch and Dan Stark). They come on over and set up after a little noise. Thursday morning - wake up around eight I think, introductions, meet Liz and her big sister, showers (telling Garret that Liz's sister might be naked right on the other side of the wall), waiting for Liz and her sister to be done with there showers and having a discussion about how come six guys can take their showers and be done before two girls, hmmmmm? sit around the fire toasting my strawberry pop tart (is it done, no its burnt) and watching Rich do an excellent job of toasting his bread. Meet Suzy the yellow dog, she must belong to Steve the camp owner. Also meet Steve's dad, a nearly deaf man who likes to repeat himself allot. Suzy thou was fun, turns out she likes Strawberry poptarts just as much as I do. Head into Phoenicia for breakfast. Eat a little quaint place, rearrange the table so we can all sit together. The waitress was very helpful, snuck up on me and filled my coffee cup with out me even noticing. Being on a very tight budget I just order coffee and milk, everyone else got OJ. Shelly(?) (Liz's sister) orders up a mushroom and ham omelet that is also order by several others. Some really nice, but expensive, local art work on the walls of the diner. Much thanks again to CAL. Tom for letting me have some of his omelet. Hang out the town for awhile, thinking about making up a huge vegetarian stew for dinner, but need a big pot, but no pot in town (toke it up, baby!). So there we are all just hanging out in front of the library on the main street of the town, if you drove down it and blinked you would of missed all the shops, waiting for the liquor store to open. Sinjin comes out of nowhere and joins the group. He was on his way to the camp grounds when he saw us and stopped. Then out of the blue comes this grey car with a guy sticking his torso up out of the sunroof. I swear he is wearing a black leather jacket with racing patches all over it, and he starts howling at Shelly. If I hadn't of been surrounded by such a group of love and holding Fuzzy at the time I would of whipped out the old Boy Scout Buck knife and done a little dirty dead dirt cheap. Then after there done filling up on gas they drive past again and the fool holds up a carton of milk and yelling out says milk does your body good, though Shelly is no longer there she's in the liquor store buying some wine. Hang out in the Whole Foods store with Greg looking for vegetarian stuff for the stew we never made. Talk to the girl working there, really nice girl. Told her all about what was going on, she was one of the few who didn't think we were freaks. What she had heard by Jewel she enjoyed. Over all the people in Phoenicia were nice to us. Back at the camp, while Peter leads a small group to go check out the venue and Shelly is looking for a nice spot in the creek to chill the wine, the rest off us still kinda mad at Crunch and Dan for waking us up when they arrived and also the fact that Crunch is still asleep at 1pm, we start throwing rocks near his tent. Well progresses to throwing them at his tent (actually its Dan's tent, sorry Dan). Then he pops his goofing, I'm a living cartoon, head out and says hello. Get into a discussion about Shelly's bugspray/spf15/skin moistener lotion that she is passing around. Bearsville - pull in around 2pm. There is a small group of people around the entrance and then some more over at the fountain. Rachel and her friend made some really neat plastic bubbles that I accidentally stepped on. Met so many people that I can't remember, I guess Fuzzy was a great magnet. Meet Gregg and Tony (gotta love that hair), throw Fuzzy over to her for a hug (she's one of the Guardians of Fuzzy along with Liz and Rachel). As I've said at the show my memory for names is not great, well neither is my memory period (bad biology classes!, bad biology classes!). Go over to the circle to meet the rest of the group that is over at the fountain. See Rachel, hard to miss in the tie-die and purple hair. Give her a hug and she steals, I mean holds Fuzzy for a while. Meet Selena, does she look like a roman goddess or what (what a lucky husband!). And she is just as much a sweetheart in person as on the list, gotta love her. Lots of other introductions happen but its just a blur right now, sorry to those who I forgot to mention. Eric sticks out right now, don't remember when he introduced himself to me but a great guy, hope he wasn't the Eric who wrecked. Then Sinjin comes over and says hey do you have a frisbee? Well it just happens that I did, wanted to bring some plaything and the only thing I had was a really old frisbee that got lost in the commotion of the event, if anyone has it maybe I can get it back sometime in the future (my sister gave it to me) if not oh well. Well his plan was for me to throw at the crowd in front of the venue and he would make a diving catch and grab it, well you know the best laid plans of mice and men don't work and this one didn't. Ended up having a big four on four practice session in the parking lot of the We Are the Stinky Frisbee Guard (man did we stink after hour or so of throwing in the hot evening sun). Rich, I think the shortest guy there, had some amazing air. And after he, umm, warmed up, yeah that's it, Sinjin got some good air, catches and a few great between the legs grabs. Only a few, HEADS UP, shots went into the crowd. Thanks again to the guy with long black hair for the water. After I am thoroly tired, started off wearing my baja and jeans, I sit down with the bunch at the door. Rachel had thankfully been taking care of Fuzzy for me. Someone else graciously let me have a pepsi. Can hear auditions for musicians for the tour coming out of the door on the side of the barn. Musicians periodically are walking out. Then all of a sudden her comes Jewel walking out. I'm standing behind Liz and she freezes, I'm whispering breathe, breathe in her ear. Tony, in a lounge chair with her back to Jewel, is the only person she talks to, a quick I like your hair and have always wanted to do something like that with mine, Tony says thanks and then Jewel gets into a little red car to be driven back to her hotel for a quick shower before the show. Sandy and Crunch go for a walk back to the creek. Someone says "Crunch went around the corner with the looker." Someone else says mistaking looker with hooker: "What a great town!" They return an hour or so later with pb&j sandwiches. Me:"how does it take an hour to make pb&j sandwiches that Crunch had already made, hmmmmm." The great lets all mash up in front of the doors and yell at Crunch event Well the show didn't start quite on time and we all ended up smashed up at the front. Dennis kept us in good humors with his quick wit. Fuzzy got some love from Tony and Liz while I got nauseous from the heat, thanks Gerrit for the water. Armand (Arm) is also simply funny with his comments. We see Akira and others on the inside working on the set up. Then we see Crunch, what the hell is he doing in there, and then he is sitting down having a drink in the cool air conditioning while we are all about to die of heat exhaustion on the outside. Akira hold up the F@#% U I'm Sensitive shirt in response to our little bit of noise for bunch of times, comments on it was funny the first three times Akira fly. Jewel comes out with somebody, Mechell (?) her boyfriend maybe, and pretends to try to open the doors and then starts pretending to beat up on the guy. Finally the doors open and we all file in to get our seats. I sit second row one seat left of center. Liz is on my left, Tom from Cal. on my right, Tony in front of me with Greg next to her. Liz is obviously very excited to be there. I go off to the bar to get a nice cool glass of grapefruit juice, the bartender looked a lot like younger Greg from Ohio(?). Then back to my seat for the show. Mike, Akira, and Dan(?) get up on stage for a quick little intro and thanks list before Patty hits the stage. Patty Griffin comes up on stage wearing a nice shirt that I am blanking on and some really cool yellow and blue tights. The power of her voice and her playing was just amazing. I could not sit still. She played, not in this order, Let Him Fly, Mad Mission (about her old boyfriend if I remember right), Poor Man's House (about her father), Every Little Bit, You Never Get What You Want, and couple more for a total of ten or so songs. She commented on how that lately she had been touring all the big motor cities of the north and that when she would walk in the performer's entrance she would get stopped and asked for her pass. But when she first walked into the Bearsville Theater she was greeted by tow hugs and felt so welcome. I was a big fan of her just from the album, but now I'm thinking of starting a ML if I can figure out how to do it and a FAQ (this I will do but may be some time). For the last two or three songs she was joined from what I can gather from the women in the audience and gorgeous dark haired Italian on guitar. Well to sum it up when he hit the stage Liz let out a little swooning noise and made a comment about how simple great looking he is. She ended the show with a beautiful version of Crazy, the old Hank William Sr song (?). This I would love to have a version of this on tape. Intermission, go off with Cal. Tom to have another drink at the bar. Meet dockmaster, and cool off. Back in my seat have a nice discussion with the older Greg about Happy Rhodes who was at the show. What was the name of the CD of hers you recommended? Jewel comes out to much applause and noise. She is wearing a simple great shirt, that I would love to have. It was purple and looked so comfortable, could tell it was one of her favorites with the cute hole in the armpit that she pointed out later in the show. She reads allot of her poety, really beautiful stuff, maybe sometime in the future she will publish a book (hint, hint Hiranya). As she is sorting through deciding which ones to read she drops them onto the ground and it looks like she is throwing them away and the crowd goes nuts Jewel: "You know you try to think of something funny to say and then people just laugh at little things like this." Oh she was so funny at times. Others can do a better job on the set list than me. I'm probably confusing allot of the Thursday show with the Friday show. She asks for request, whole bunch yelled out, "I'll play one that wasn't requested." I think it was Don't. Show just rocks, mainly rarities like Cold Song (both nights so it might be on the album or just one of her personal, and mine, favorites). Three new favorite songs: Kmart Bathroom song, Satellites, and Fat Boy. Kmart Bathroom is one of those songs like many of her's that is funny the first few times you hear it but the more you listen the more you cry (don't worry Tom O'Brien I cried during many myself, Nikos, Moon over Austin, Fat Boy and many more). Its was written when she was really depressed and ended up in a Kmart bathroom and how the florescent lights bring out all the lines in your face and how the mirrors are all fat mirrors Jewel: "Right Girls!" Girls in crowd: "Yeah!" Fat Boy is about Edward who used to work the fields with her in Alaska and killed himself, leaving behind a note saying he didn't feel anyone would love him because he was so big. Made me cry 'cause I sometimes feel that way too. For someone so lovely, Jewel has certainly been through allot in her little bit of life, or maybe that is just a commentary on our society. Allot of her songs are about how we feel pressure from everywhere that it is all in how you look, WWSYS, Fat Boy, Nikos at places, and others. No musician has ever made me cry before, some a little teary eyed, but not flowing, and she does that to me. Back to the show. She comments on the list, how that she was on it awhile ago on some else's machine. She answered the whole cigarette/lollypop question with Tom form LA saying "Grape" which made me laugh so hard. Jewel "I would tell you all if I ever lit up." When she asked again for request later, Liz and I both started chanting Racecar Driver, turns out that she really hates that song, Me "But he is in town" Jewel: "What?" then Liz tells the story. The band just rocked!!! Mark (?) on guitar (and the little one Jewel: "He is a real man who is not afraid to play a little guitar." and while he is tuning in between songs "Notice how his nostrils flare when he is tuning") was just amazing. On Satellites, a song about living in LA, a really beautiful song that is positive not like WWSYS, he barely plays the guitar traditionally the whole time, blowing on the strings and using different knobs for amazing effects. The drummer (Jewel: "I won't tell you what lesbians think his facial hair looks like") who put just enough power into the songs. Then there is T-Bone on base, (Me and Arm: "T- Boooone!!" "T!,T!,T!,T!,T!" with the time-out hand gesture) with his VT hat, though not Virginia Tech but close enough for me. the rest of the show was just amazing. Especially her performance of Nikos, the really evil grin she had at "Smile" was just great. I couldn't help but laugh out loud when she fumbled the opening guitar to one of the songs, crowd got quite and I said sorry but she quickly responded with "Don't be sorry, I thought it was funny too." Still I felt smaller than Fuzzy (who also thought it was funny). When Lenedra came on up to sing with her daughter I was taken aback by the beauty of it. They look so much alike in the face. After singing back up on one song, Lenedra went on to sing one of the lullabies she used to sing for Jewel. I want a recording of it to play at bedtime, it was so beautiful, Jewel is so lucky to have her for a mom. The next to last encore with Nikos, Nicotine Love, and one other made every one real sad, but Jewel made up for it with her final encore. The message I think many got from the show was that men just suck. A bunch of us guys at the campgrounds made a pact to all become lesbians and hunt down the racecar driver in town take him to the Friday show, get him to yell "Yodel," beat him up and then sacrifice him later at the campsite. After the show hanging out waiting for Jewel to come over and sign autographs. She walks over and seeing a big crowd I walk over to where Patty is and introduce myself and Fuzzy and ask for an autograph. She starts to sign the cover of her cd and I tell her that I am a big fan, that my favorite song is Lorraine (playing right now) just love the writing on it. She is a real sweet lady with a beautiful quiet voice. I'm feeling real faint and weak in the knees, there shaking so fast right now, maybe from not having eaten much over the past two days, but probably because I have never meet someone who I considered famous before. She signs "Robb, Thanks for listening All the best Peace Love Patty Griffin." Oh gotta love her. I ask her for a picture she says yes, and she actually puts her arm around me for the shot HAPPY LITTLE BOY!!!!!! I say thanks and start to walk off. Then I see her accompanist come walking out of the barn. I walk over, tell him he did great in the show and then tell him about Liz. He is real nice and says "Your not supposed to tell people that" as he is blushing. Then back to the line to wait for Jewel autograph. After taking pictures for others I finally get up there. Introduce myself and Fuzzy and ask her if I can get a picture off her and me and her hugging Fuzzy after she signs her album cover. She does, hope this picture turns out. Then she says wait and grabs Fuzzy out of my arms for the infamous kiss, that bear gets way more love than I do (am I jealous, not really cause I get to sleep with someone who was that close to Jewel and got a little bit of lovin' also). And yes it was more than just a little friendly kiss there, lets just say I got a real good look at the tongue that sings the songs we all so much love. And no one got a picture of it. Can't blame Gerrit, neither he nor I was expecting this to happen. Also I forgive all the rest of you out there with cameras at the time, who would of thought it was going to happen. Trying to convince Liz to let me take a picture of her on the guitarist motorcycle with her arms wrapped around him. The only time I remember that girl being quiet. HeHe. After that back to the hotels in an unsuccessful attempt to get kicked out of New York as Sinjin suggested and then all of the rest of the states until we hit LA in one long party spree. Feeling real tired, laying back in the chairs at the bar with Paul(?) and the T-shirt guy while everyone else is getting a little drunk on free beer. I know for a fact that the underage didn't, well at least Liz and Rachel. Thanks for the water Rachel. A group of us left early for the campsite to get a fire going. Sinjin in the rental car driving, and squelling around corners. Whoa Rental Car!!! Us piled four in the back of the compact. "Yeah Rich can fit if he sticks his head out of the window (which he did for awhile)." Listening to Tom O'Brien getting a greeting from the crowd and also the marijuana story on a boot. ""Hi Tom!!" "My voice is on five boots now" Hitting the campsite, me and Paul start a really big and kickin' fire. Me: "Hey what do you expect from an Eagle Scout" Paul: "Well I'm just a really big pyro." Staying up till sunrise back at the campsite with Rachel, Gerrit, Crunch, and Shelly. I don't know about the rest but I think there was some true chemistry between the last two. Not seeing a sunrise but instead just a lightening of the sky. Tom O'Brien snoring away on the picnic table while the rest of us are talking. Liz with a still obvious buzz on from the show. Waking up I don't know when after a really short nap in my car. Pack up the vehicle and head into Woodstock to do a little sight seeing before the finally show. Lots of great little shops in town. Meet a very pretty and interesting girl in one of the shops, she might be joining the list (you out there) talked about the show and the airplane crash. She said she heard Jewel on the local radio doing a lunch time interview. Really wanted to invite her to the second show but didn't know if she could get in (Bad hormones!!, Bad hormones!!). Hanging out in the square with Crunch, Shelly, Arm, Greg, Rocker, and others was great. Rocker has to be one of the most laid back and tanned guys I have ever meet. Arm got Shelly to go get her navel pierced but the cost was way too much, though Arm did get his other ear pierced. The rain did little to ruin the mood, Rocker, Arm and me hanging out under a tree and then at a shop. Meeting up with Mike, Dennis and the guy who has Jewel's water bottle at the photo shop. Photographing us infront of a store called Pieces of Me and covering up the ry on Jewelry so it read Jewel. Going back to the bar at the hotel, listening to the Boston show, playing cards, teaching little Patty to play 5 card stud, watching all the other kids run around, letting Patty play with Fuzzy. Meeting Catherine and talking to her for a long time. Really enjoyed meeting you in person. Talking to a young lady from Toronto (home of many of the songs we love, and I say the mecca for the list) off the list for a long time at the bar then off to the show with two really nice girls who I can not remember there names now, sorry =(. Meeting back up with everyone at the show. Meeting and giving hugs to Jennifer, passing around tylinol "Its wrong to take drugs, stealing is bad" Thanks very much for the Chinese food and your friend for the Ben and Jerry's ice cream. Got a good photo of Dennis is his Grateful Dead Bear shirt with Fuzzy on his head, the only photo he let me take of him. Second show was great and I'm too tired to go into detail except that Fuzzy rode the crowd and got a wave from Jewel when she came on, also she said something about him at the end but could not understand her too good. Got a great shot of her riding away on hey bo's bike. Thanks again to Dennis for running around trying to get me that boot. I miss you all so much, and as I tried to yell out at the end I love you all emensly. This list has helped me get through some really rough shit in my life, with out you I don't know where I would be and don't even want to think about how this summer could of been. Well the soreness is starting to wear off and I think my voice is back to normal now so here goes my complete memories of the show, sorry again to all those who I forgot to mention and those whose names I forgot. Feel really bad that I didn't get to meet you Silvercat. In a way I sum up the whole trip with: There were no awkward moments, only love and mutual respect for each other and for a special young woman whose name fits her soul. well again sorry for the length but some out there wanted all the dirt Robb "I have an impuss control problem and I love it!" and Fuzzy "She kissed me!!!!She really kissed me!!!!!" w/ 12" 'Zilla and Tricky the invisible calico cat ------------------------------ From: Fuzzy the Love Bear & Robb Date: Sun, 21 Jul 1996 19:28:59 +0600 Subject: well...prt3 the rest of the show was just amazing. I will be in the state on that day, 8-19 and want to know where the Neil Young/Jewel show is compared to New York City where I'll be. I beleive the tickets go on sale this Saturday. The MSG show is the next night the 20th but I imagine it will be easier to get tiks for the other New York show than the one at Madison Square, unless anyone on the list has some kind of connectiosn to MSG.......and could give me some info. Anybody out there who can help? Paul, Los Angeles, CA ------------------------------ End of jewel-digest V1 #386 ***************************
