Paul Kim posted about a free songwriters' event, which I certainly wish I could go to; oh well. Just wanted to chime in and say that I've seen the Nields and June Rich live, and they are both fantastic; and I have Nil Lara's third album (first on major-label) and he sounds pretty wonderful too. Jonatha Brooke was on that bill too, I believe. You'd do well to see it, if you can. There are in fact only two words in the English language that end in - -gry. Or rather, there are many, of which only two are in common usage. The third most common seems to be puggry (or pugry), which is a cloth used to tie a sun hat to your head (Australian usage) or a cloth wrapped around the head to keep the sun off. I wish this silly question would go away, it's worse than Craig Shergold and nearly as bad as the GOOD TIMES virus panic...and if you don't know what I mean, keep in mind that Craig got better and does not need business cards any more, and GOOD TIMES is, was and always will be a hoax. Unless someone objects or has a better idea, I will be starting a private AOL chat room called JS12STEP (has to start with a letter) at about 4PM MDT. If someone wants to start it earlier, that's fine. To enter a private chat room, go to people connection or keyword chat, click the "private" icon and type the chat room name. It will be created if you are the first, or you will join it already in progress. I emailed AOL about getting a larger room, but they just sent me a file of general instruction. So, the limit will still be 23 connections. I'm not sure how the overflow is handled. On some chat rooms, a new room is automatically created. Anyway, it's a private room called JS12STEP at 4:00pm MDT Thursday. Or, if you want to start it earlier, please use JS12STEP as the PRIVATE room name so we all can find it. This is soley for the purpose of my own anxiety release...I've m or or less spent my day arguing with people that Jewel's music is not superfici al. Our girl's getting quite popular, and in a lot of cases, getting overplaye d on the radio. People hear "Who Will Save Your Soul" and that is all they jud ge her by...the fact that it is played way too much these days. I argued that POY has been out for over a year and Jewel worked her ass off touring and shit (can I swear? Is that allowed?) to get where she is now. Remember when we'd get posts saying that someone heard Jewel on the radio for the first time and it was exciting, etc? :) I love that Jewel is reaching such a level of succes s and I hope that it continues because she deserves it and she could touch so m any people with her music. The thing that makes me sad is that there are peopl e who would just conclude that her music is superficial because she is getting air time...they don't know who she is, where she's been, where her music has be en... I guess I just have to get use to harsher critisism (and that not all of her critics are on this list cause you people are great) :) Doesn't mean I ca n't bark back at them, though. :) (Dammit, I can't argue whether or not I shou ld get a raise, but I sure as hell can argue about Jewel!) :) Another thought, since I hardly post anything :) -- not that I am an IRC addict or anything, but I usually make channel #tori my home on IRC, but I think they are all getting sick of me talking about Jewel all the time and starting fights (someone said Jewel was a Tori wanna be!!!!! --I love Tori so I don't know why that was such an insult, but I don't think they are even remotely alike --not to start the whole Jewel/Tori comparisson again, though), so, I was thinking fo r anyone on the list who IRC, we could open up a channel #Jewel or something. I keep channel #Kilcher open once in awhile and sometimes people come in who ar e fans of Miss Kilcher. Maybe an #EverydayAngels channel? If we could talk in there, maybe that could lessen the non Jewel related mail issue that has been goign on. Or add to it. :) Can we say run-on sentence? :) Hell, while I am here, anyone want to trade boots? :) Sorry this is so long. Insomnia is not my friend. Well, not really, since I seem to sound like that all the time even without breathing air permeated by the flatulence of an English Springer Spaniel. Ah, but before my sweet old dog's transgressions, I inhaled the third best concert of my young sheltered life: my second live helping of Tori Amos. No. 2 was my first NIN show and number one was ... OK, you get three guesses, but you'll be shot if you don't get it right the first time. Anyway, Tori was in peak form, sounding better on her "Boys for Pele" songs than she does on the actual album. I swore "Space Dog" (from "Under the Pink") would be my favorite piece from the show, but she trounced that with her final song, a cover of Prince's "Purple Rain," on an ORGAN! I was super-giddy upon leaving the event center, but that giddiness was eventually squelched by the Parade of Snails at the parking garage. Still, sweet dreams are on their way tonight. Sometimes performances are so good my eyes get watery, and this was one of them. I know my eyes would get plenty watery if I could make it to JewelStock (@#%*@#%!!!), but I guess I'll just have to cry a different form of tears at the end of this week. Bah-humbug! I'm not that emotional! I'll be a manly man! I'll dutifully shelve books on incontinence, the joys of gay sex, and Fodor's guides to Zimbabwe whilst three thousand miles away, Miss Kilcher slathers her beatific voice on you adoring halo-bearers! I'll bear my haloless burden with honor, dignity, and a giant helping of T.G.I. Friday's Strawberry Shortcake frozen alcoholic beverage! Who needs "twelve steps?" I shall be perfectly content watching CNN's latest coverage of the deterioration of human relations while poisoning my lungs with my Springer's magnanimous odor! Merry Christmas to all, and to all a good night! Tori Amos didn't wink at me since I was four thousand feet away (I exaggerate: row DD wasn't THAT far back), so as you should have guessed, May 3rd at Bimbo's 365 still holds most favored concert status partly based on Jewel's satisfaction of that technicality. Would JewelStock have displaced that wondrous night had I taken the opportunity to go? Perhaps, but it would doubtless prove difficult to earn a share of Miss Kilcher's divided attention in a sea full of even more adoring fans, so by my greedy nature I shall pretend that May 3rd shall never be topped. Well, two hundred people will be more of a pond than a sea, but let me have my delusions! You get Jewel, I get my delusions. Fair? What else is going on, hmm ... I finally bought a previously-viewed copy of "Seven," rounding out my stereotypical Hinckley tape collection: "Reservoir Dogs," "Taxi Driver," "Pulp Fiction," etc. Yet I also have "Schindler's List," "Forrest Gump," "Red," "Rambling Rose," etc. I think I turn out to be a balanced person, even if the balance has some of the longest arms ever constructed. I got the new issue of Esquire. When Hiranya mentioned several weeks ago about Miss Kilcher being included in some "50 Fabulous Women" thing, I was fairly sure she meant Esquire's annual "Women We Love" issue. Bingo. Ain't no picture 'o Jewel in there, but she IS listed as one of the "Women Who Rock Us Gently," along with the likes of Joan Osborne, Aimee Mann, and Emmylou Harris, the last of whom my father compared to Jewel when he first heard our communal infatuation. By the way, Tori Amos made it under the category "Okay, We Get It, You're Religious AND Horny." Good guess, Mike Connell! I am in fact a tenor. I took a chorus class in high school before my voice changed, and I'm afraid I was technically an alto. But the teacher looked out for my self-esteem and downgraded me to a tenor. I may be a baritone now, as all my friends were then, but I still find it easier to sing songs like a 1960's Leonard Cohen. Ahh, but if I develop into a 1990's Leonard Cohen, I'll be STOKED. I am now murdering "Absence of Fear" on what has been officially declared "my" flamenco guitar. Maybe that's the reason my puppy is punishing me. I thought it was kind of annoying, because you spent 3/4 of the time staring at their sides or their backs, and only 1/4 of the time they were facing you. Also, even if you were sitting in the front row, you were fairly far away from the performers, because the stage was really big and they stood near the middle.
