Pretty funny, with Jewel admitting she only did it because you've gotta do it once before you understand that NO ONE can make that song sound right (and that's why no one ever does it twice -- remember the Roseann Barr/Arnold/Whoever performance?) Would some nice little soul please send me directions on how to make a signature file. I attempted to make one and accidentally broke into Ben and Jerry's Melted Ice Cream Archives. I have all that stuff like the most recent Netscape and Windows and thingamagigees, but I can't seem to do it. And by the way Carter, Citibanks's not in good shape right now, maybe if you charge very quietly they won't take notice. As far as that Jewel News List idea... if you don't like the color of the flowers, plant new ones. In regard to Jewelstock, I am so excited, I have self-prescribed sedatives in order to remain docile and managable. I hope everyone that wants to make it can. If you are having trouble, e-mail me and I'll try to give you a big greasy hand. Those of you that contacted me about camping, there is only about a dozen of you. Just a quick note as I promised: Long-time list members may remember the story of Kerry Hennigin, rabid Jewel fan and tape branch, who departed after a near-fatal auto accident which rendered her unable to continue school and of course separated her from her student internet account. I collected good wishes from the list and mailed them to her during her convalescence. Well, I got a long reply today, and I thought I'd share a brief summary with the list. Kerry is recovering nicely, but will be unable to return to school for a while. She has gotten married and sounds quite happy with the result. She got to meet Tori Amos after a recent concert, and had some wonderful things to say about her. Kerry has asked me to send her deepest thanks to those who sent their good wishes after her accident, and wants me to keep her up to date on Jewel news until they can get online and she hopefully is able to rejoin us. Anyone who wants to contact her by mail please Email me privately and I'll either forward your message or give you her address... - -- | Greg Dunn | "Information is not knowledge; | | GregDunn@aol.com | knowledge is not wisdom; | | gregdunn@indy.net | wisdom is not truth." | | http://members.aol.com/gregdunn/ | -- Frank Zappa | ------------------------------ From: Dan Stark Date: Thu, 4 Jul 1996 04:02:38 -0400 Subject: Re: Content of No Consequence Other Than Camping Crunch said: > Those of you that contacted me about >camping, there is only about a dozen of you. Thanks Jake Happy Independence Day Everyone AND GO SEE THE MOVIE!!!! ------------------------------ From: Hiranya@aol.com Date: Thu, 4 Jul 1996 11:23:15 -0400 Subject: correction A misunderstanding: Jewel is selecting from about 30 songs for her CD. They have not arranged and recorded 30 songs. They stared with a list of songs they are interested in, about fifty good songs. Then they narrowed that down 34. Then they started preproduction and ran through all 28 songs. This was in San Diego at a hotel on the beach with Jewel, her producer, and the guitar player Marc S, and Lenedra. Jewel and Marc fiddled with ideas for the songs and Peter directed the effort giving the guidance and big picture view that gives cohesive- ness. Lenedra said hes really quite extrodinary. Totally into what Jewel wants while at the same time has a wealtlh of info, techniques, idea, and experience that Jewel can raid any time she wants! So they only cut it down to 28 songs during the preproduction. Then they hit Bearsville and the whole band started at the Bearsville Theater, for the band tracks, (soon to be the site of JewelStock). A week of rehearsals. Marc S., guitar (toured a lot with Suzanne Vega and others) he will tour with Jewel on the Neil Young tour. T-Bone Wolk, bass guitar, who tours with Elton John and--I forget, a lot of huge names. Jerry M. (sorry everybody, I'll get you complete info soon. is the drummer and he's really famous and very incredible. A percussionist from Sweden was the last member for the band tracks--Michale. So they worked out ideas for the band tracks for 5 days and then went into Studio A at Bearsville Studio for a week of recording. (Again, only the band tracks) Studio A is where a lost of rock history has hapened. Janis Joplin, Bob Bylan and the Band, and many others have recorded there. Its HUGE and made to have incredible drum sound. So some of these tracks ROCK. Expect no less. This CD will go from acoustic, soft sensitive to full out rock and Jewel is loving it all. They laid down: Boy needs a Bike (which was a Peter idea and it cuts such a cool groove!), Jessica (a delicate version as well as an incredible rockin version and theres no way a choice can be made between them cuz they are both so awesome), Carnivore--hold onto your underwear, Deep Water--chillingly good, Tough Girl--rocks!, Fragile Heart, Innocence Maintained, Satellite--love it!, to name a few. They did a dozen band songs. (not 30) Obviously, not all of them will make the cut cuz its not going to be a band album. Maybe half and half. Fourteen songs or less is the total length. All band members fell in love (musically) with Jewel. They feel she is the most amazing talent they have worked with in a long time and that she is one of those HUGE artists that really affect music. They are all trying to free their schedules to tour with her in Aug, but Jerry is producing Carlee Simon and may not be done, and TBone is having trouble getting out of a previous committment. So we'll see. Next week they start the acoustic work in Studio B which is a much more intimate studio. Among the contenders currently are His Pleasure is my Pain, Louisas Blue Guitar, Fragil Flame (Fat Boy), 1000 Miles, Sometimes it Be that Way. And more: 13 songs will be recorded during the next two weeks. Then the mixing will begin and after that the selection for the album, when all the songs can be looked at together. Those recordings are from the sparse Shiva Diva Doo Wop tape >that Jewel produced independantly, right? Absolutely. And all of the bonus tracks from the EPs are also totally legitimate. In fact, Save the Linoleum was a promo EP sent specifically to college radio stations. It would really be up to the station's management what they do with "bootleg" material. College radio is notorious for airing this sort of thing, as grey an area as it may be. Even big commercial stations air some sometimes, although they have enough clout to be able to get away with it. Not to stray too far from Jewel content, but one of the big Detroit rock stations has gotten their hands on the new Kiss album that is not intended for release now, since the band has regrouped in its original form, and they're spinning this unreleased stuff like crazy much to the dismay of the record company I'm sure. Now that's an extreme case that does nothing to help the band's cause, and I don't condone this sort of thing, I'm just pointing out it goes on. Anyway, all of those Shiva Diva, StL and Phyllis Barnabee tracks are fair game. From what I've seen from Jewel and her Mom, I doubt they'd want any other stuff to show up in a regular rotation, but I don't think they'd be too upset if you sprinkled some into a spotlight special about her on non-commercial college radio, as it would only help to promote her. That's just a guess, if you want to know for sure, Hiranya might be able to ask for you. I don't know how much control the JewelStock organizers will have over this, but PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE try to have them include _all_ of it on the tape, not just the songs and the highlights. For many of us (myself included, alas) this will be our only actual experience of JewelStock. To miss hearing Jewel interact with 330 of her most committed fans would be a shame. For all the technical faults of the Irving Plaza RealAudio Internet feed, the fact that it was complete and unedited (well, maybe that was a bit _too_ unedited :^) provided a tremendous feeling of actually being there.
