I was watching the VH-1 countdown tonight, and Jewel's risen to #3. The interesting thing, though, is what the VJ said after the video was over... the said something like "That was Jewel at #3, the woman who has a thing for people's noses- she just likes to touch them, she says." Hmmm, in-ter-es-ting. Also, in the August issue of Seventeen, there's a little bio and blurb about Duncan Sheik. However, it says he's "touring with Jewel (singer/yodeler of the moment) ". Sheesh. I'm not even gonna start complaining about this. You know what ? I went into work tonight, took a deep breath, and mustered up the courage to ask my boss for 5 days off- 2 for JStock, and 3 for Disney World. He told me to quit. He actually did. Can you imagine that ? So the point is that I'm losing my job halfly just to go to see Jewel. I'll be there with no money in my pocket and a big dreamy smile on my face... If I can get there. See, my boyfriend's best friend, who introduced me to this list, is driving with my boyfriend to JStock. My boyfriend is my guest, as well as my ride. They're coming up from Maryland to Mass to get me, then going down to NY, then bringing me back, then going home. Well, my boyfriend's best friend ( who will remain nameless, he knows exactly who he is ) doesn't want my boyfriend to go pick me up. He says I have to get my own ride. What the hell ? If he's MY guest, and MY boyfriend, and my ONLY ride, and there's no way on God's green EARTH I'm a good enough driver to go by myself, and I'm only 17 so my parents would NEVER let me ride with a stranger, what the hell does he expect me to do ? Blah. So. My main point is I've lost my job for a concert I have to pull some MAJOR freakin' strings to get to. If anybody wants to be on my side on this and give me some sympathy, I'd certainly love it. *sigh* Rachel CornflkGl@aol.com "I'm still the Angel to a girl who hates to sin " --Tori ------------------------------ From: jeffw (Jeff Wasilko) Date: Mon, 1 Jul 1996 21:37:04 -0400 (EDT) Subject: Re: jewel NEWS list PAUL KYUSAM KIM writes: > Somebody would have to be the administrator for the list, much like Jeff > Wasilko handles this list, but be more hands on. I read in an earlier post > that someone said "it was." Wierd. Anyway, overall it was cool. One more thing: Well, since the magazine photo is national, I bet they changed the plate so that people wouldn't know what the real one was. Any professional photographers on the list know if this is a privacy and legality issue, or just, as Jordan put it, "Wierd"? BTW Jordan, in case it's the latter maybe you shouldn't post up any of the pics (in case you were thinkin' about it). There is such a thing as too much information, and Jewel's license plate # probably falls under this classification. > After seeing Jewel three times in the past 3 weeks, I wonder if anyone else has noticed > that she "recycles" her stories and comments. The same goes for the "I flare my nostrils" > story, "San Diego is the best place ON earth," "Take it up one half step like a good > whitney houston song," etc.. has anyone else noticed this "recycling" of comments that she > uses? Yeah, I found this a little disconcerting at first, since I'd never really experienced "re-cycling" before Jewel. But then again, Jewel is the first performer I've seen in concert more than once (oops, I take that back. I have seen just a few others multiple times, but that's not my point). After my initial surprise, it didn't bother me. Do people remember when stand-up comedy was just taking off on TV? This was way before the Comedy Channel for you younger folks :) A&E had a late-night show (can't remember the name) + Carol Leifer's Comedy Hour, HBO had just started their comedy specials. Anyway, what's my point? Oh yeah, this was the first time that a lot of smaller comedians really got significant national exposure and big acts also got a lot more airtime (yeah, I know comedians have always been featured on the late shows, but in terms of performer x material hours, we saw a tremendous explosion). So now a whole lot more people were seeing these comedians' material. But if they didn't have a pretty good joke turnover, you might see them doing the same bits in several places, or worse, the same bit on successive appearances to the same show. And I'm not talking about their classic material here (which is what I consider most of Jewel's stories to be - think of them as though they were songs, worthy also of replay). Okay, I'm not sure I've made my point yet (gee, what is it?). Well, it's just this: As wonderful as Jewel is, we can't expect her to have all new stories at every show. And the story for a particular song probably isn't going to change much, though maybe added to. The bits that are specific to a particular place have very limited usefulness (that is, they're often ONLY good for that place, so she'd have to come up with new ones every night - and she does do this a lot). Oh, sheesh, it just occurred to me that I might have ruined some fantasies out there that everything on stage is spontaneous (maybe I'm just giving away some performer secrets here - some of it is pre-planned and scripted). I used to be under that impression, and to some extent I still am. With all that said, I'm still glad to hear from Hiranya's post that Jewel is making more of an effort to come up with new material. Even with all the stories she already has (compare to other performers each of you have experience with), there's always room for more :) Aaron and for my first real end-of-message quote (I have finally given in), I think I'll choose Ani. Yeah, that's what we figured.. and yes, I am planning on scanning in and posting pictures from both the java joe's shows and the del mar fair show, but i'll blurr out the license # in photoshop. Can she release a double (or triple :) CD on her second outing? No way, not yet (can she?). It sure makes for a wonderful dream though. So what's going to happen to those extra tracks? Do they wait for album #3? This would save her some work 'cause she wouldn't have to do any new recording for the third one. Or maybe they'll get released as a couple dozen non-LP singles? And to complicate things further, the release will probably be delayed for some new singles off PoY (finally!) Ya know, I think Jewel's problem is she's just too darn good and way too prolific. To answer your ONE question I did not address in my post last night is that "tickets" will not be handed out, you show at the door as we'll have your name and your guest's name if you bring one. I have to admit your EMAIL got me REALLY mad at first, but I have calmed down. I know you EMAILed me on Friday and I EMAILed back, but I did not save a copy and know not what I told you. Last night I posted the new RSVP rules at about 9:30pm EST. The subject says: JEWELSTOCK: OK folks, it's time to re-RSVP!! I suggest you read that post fully, understand it and respond accordingly. In a nutshell it will tell you that you can go to ONE show only, and bring ONE guest only. But read it all anyway. The reason I was and am still a bit mad is that I've been posting for almost a week that we'd have to re-RSVP and there'd be NEW rules posted on Sunday or Monday. Then I get an EMAIL from you that just wasted some of my time. I'm very busy on this and other things, I try to make my instruction and news posts as clear as possible, and people tell me they are. So EMAILs like yours tonight confuse me. Have you not read what I wrote the last week? I will be posting EMAILs on the list for the coming two weeks or so with more news about JewelStock to the list. Please READ them and do not waste my time by asking questions that I've already answered. All my posts (and the other organizers) that post EMAILs that have to do with this event say JEWELSTOCK (all capitals) in the subject. We reccomend that posts from "list members" about the event should say JewelStock (mostly lower case). It's an easy way to spot news on the event. To learn about what is going on, READ ALL of those (JewelStock/JEWELSTOCK) type of EMAILs first, and THEN if your question is not answered, please EMAIL me, I'd be glad to answer. My intention was to issue a warning to unspecting fans that they need to be careful when dealing with the trading or purchasing of concert CD's. When the prices start reaching 30-50 dollars or even more they are most likely unlicensed and illegal. It comes to my attention that I might have miss-interprated Michael's remarks about his practices, if that is indeed the case I apologize. So basically what I meant to say was be skeptical if your asked to pay exorbitant prices for concerts cd's and demand the proper licensing information, because those that operate without the artists consent are slighting you and ripping off the artist. ------------------------------ From: Sinjin@ecn.com Date: Tue, 02 Jul 1996 04:31:33 GMT Subject: Re: Jewel Swearing Ready2Rock@Jewel.Stock Hiranya wrote: >about her lack of swearing at Del Mar show > >Jewel has come to realize that at certain kinds of events >families come withyounger kids and her swearing is offensive to them >so she's trying to be considerate of this.
