I don't know what got into me. Here i am sharing the most personal story with stangers. But music can create that kind of magic. Many years ago, a few musicians gathered together with a few strangers with a common trust in each other and had a great time at Woodstock. That same spirit will make Jewelstock even more successful. I hope to meet some of you at the Del Mar show this Saturday, June 29. Many of you on the list are from the San Diego area so I'm going to take a chance and ask for some very special help from you. I have a son Erik, who was pronounced dead at an accident he was in 5 years ago. He was revived and spent 3 weeks fighting for his life while in a coma. His best friend died. The driver only had minor injuries. He had to learn to walk, talk, breathe and eat all over again. It was like a rebirth. For the first month I slept on the floor of the IC units waiting room. At the rehab hospital they gave me a cot next to his bed. Music helped him survive. We played his favorite stuff while he was still in a deep coma. When he started walking, it was Bob Marley that got him to walk farther each day as I took him into the parking lot to hear it in my car. The good news is he has come a long way. He works part-time at NCR. But here is where I need help. He has no friends his age. None. Not one friend. Let me first tell you a little about him. He LOVES Jewel. He golfs, plays billiards, rides mountain bikes, plays drums and likes photography. He takes classes at Palomar Community College. He is 6'1", 22 years old, dirty blonde hair, blue eyes. He is extremely good looking. When we go to the mall, grown women very often turn around and take a second look (why are they looking at my son's butt that way). At a recent Padres game there were a group of women passing judgement on all the approaching men and one of them said, here comes a good one. they all started to cat call and wistle at him. He was embarresed but felt great for day's. Well what's wrong with him. He just lost all confidence in him self and has become very afraid to try making friends. I'm not trying to make a love connection for him, just hoping he meets a few nice people, male and female. It would be great if any of you would just come over and say HELLO IGOR i'm from the list and introduce yourselves. I'll be easy to spot. I'm the fat ugly one with holes in my face. My wife is a beautiful skinny redhead and you now know what Erik looks like. How many other 22 year olds are at a concert with there father. If he knew I was doing this, he probably would be very mad, but I love him enough to take this chance. After you meet him and find that anything I said is not true, then blast me to hell on this list. If you would like to write him, I'll pass the posts to him because he doesn't have an e-mail account. I don't want you to feel pity for him, just asking for someone to give him a chance. Igor igorwas@smartcitysys.com (A Father from Hell) The description of me comes from a quote from my actress daughter. I was trying to discurage her from going into acting by telling her she wasn't pretty enough. She said," You know dad, even you could be an actor. They have parts for fat ugly guys with holes in there face". I love her for saying it and now support every thing she does. By the way she is also very beautiful. ------------------------------ From: Dan Stark Date: Tue, 25 Jun 1996 04:11:04 -0400 Subject: Surfrider CD Hi everyone, The Surfrider Foundation compilation CD, called MOM, will be in stores July 2. I have a fax with no shortage of information about the Surfrider Foundation, but unfortunately I left page one at work. I believe this is a benefit CD with proceeds to the Surfrider Foundation who are concerned about the state of our oceans and beaches. I'll have to post more detailed info a little later, but in the meantime here's a track listing, and comment from Jewel excerpted from the promo sheet. I just for some reason (call it sense of responsibility) see it as my duty to protect young people (and I guess old people as well) that I see may be getting themselves in trouble they can't handle. That's why when I see some young punk smacking his equaly young girlfriend, I must say something to the punk and tell the girl that she deserves better than the piece of shit. Or if I see some werido that looks like he might be following young kids thru the mall, I might stay nearby until he moves off. I guess if more people were like that we wouldn't have so many kids turn up missing, dead, raped, mutilated, etc. Maybe some people will call me some a crusader or something as silly, but I won't change. I kind of like the feeling when I think that I may have stopped an abduction or some girl being beaten by her boyfriend. Call me weird. :) Dean Harris P.S. MTV BEACH HOUSE 1996 - I caught the tail end of a live video from the MTV beach house yesterday. It WWSYS outdoors in the CAL. sun. She was on a small riser with the crowd on all sides (much like the parking lot concert in SD). Keep an eye out for those who are interested. HOWARD STERN - I will keep the witty commentary aside and get to the point.. Howard STERN was talking about JEWEL yesterday on his morning show. Since i figured few people are fans of both JEWEL and STERN, I will relay the basic jist of the discussion. STERN mentioned he had a new song he liked, by a girl named JEWEL. He played WWSYS and mentioned how many women are varying their voices when they sing (i.e. JEWEL, Alanis MORISSETTE, Dolores O'RIORDAN, etc.) He then continued to say that she has a really sexy voice that he likes. From that he wondered if she thought about sex when she was singing since he obviously was. He then continued to say that he is in touch with his feminine side and can like songs like these. He said something about 'faggot' songs or the 'faggot' song, but since I was just waking up I could not remember that well. He also stated that JEWEL is VERY CUTE. Anyway that is about all I can remeber. Oh yes... My lurking thanks go out to those who supply the tapes and tabs. I enjoy reading amature poetry, has something rare and down to earth that is laking from the stuff I read in classes. Well heres one of mine. This one was writen for a waitress at one of my town's coffee houses. I havn't seen her lately but we had a really great conversation that night, she helped me work throu a lot of shit and see that some of it was not that bad. After writing it I made a quick copy and gave her the original as a tip. She really enjoyed it and thought it was better than any amount of money, no one had writen anything for her before. This is a good sample of my writing style, I usually only write poetry to record my feelings at a particular moment in time, and mainly they are about people I've met. Well I hope you enjoy this and write back privatly with any comments or if you want to hear more, only got a few that I feel comfortable with sharing so it won't be that many Candle to Rebecca I saw it, but I could not believe, a candle in the darkness It lit up the air where before it was black and gave off just enough warmth to feel. A world at night is my world to feel the silence and stillness. But with it the darkness and the cold with no fire to warm or to see with. And then a single candle appears just enough to pull me from the night. Does it matter who carries that candle but only that it is there, conforting, calming. A single candle to show me the day, to remind that there are many still around. To let me know, to let me see. I thank this candle in my dark world.
