It is by the same artist who came under fire last year for piss christ which was a crucifix in a jar of urine (now that's talent ;)). James didn't want it on the cover because he was worried it would cause some stores to pull it from the shelves if they found out what it is. Weird! For your sake I hope everyone on this list > are decent people and there are no sick, twisted perverts. I'd hate to see > a fellow (albeit young) Everyday Angel get into trouble. > > Dean Harris Very decent of you. My exact thoughts. Good to see other people on this list with street smarts. When I first discovered Jewel, I called my daughter in LA to tell her about this great artist. She starts saying to people in the background, "my father likes Jewel" and proceeded to laugh. Well as a father of a 25 year old daughter and 22 year old son, it may seem strange that I would be on this list. I have over 20 years experience in the music industry and Jewel has fired up my old love of music. Another artist that I only recently discovered is Ani DiFranco and again my daughter had been a fan for 3 years. Also it is great to see Bruce Springsteen put out a very important, socially conscienous CD(Ghost of Tom Joad). While I'm at it, give a listen to the last two CD's by Wayne Kramer. You may have heard of him from a late 60's group called MC5. He is concidered one of the grandfathers(inventor is kinder) of punk rock. It's filled with great writing and incredable guitar work. Another reason I'm on this list is because of wonderful people like the above quoted Dean. This list lets me better understand my own kids. Many of you have been sharing personal info and I'd like to tell you a little about me with just a short story. One day a young man came into my record store(whats a record)that I had seen many a times before, but looked kind of troubled as he was searching for a cassette. I said to him, "you look like shit. What's wrong"? He said he had broken up with his girlfriend. His hair was greasy and matted, his clothes looked like he had slept in them. I asked him how they had met and he said, "at the mall". He said "I'll never meet anyone like her again." Well this was my advice to him. I said "Get in your car and head west on I-80. About 15 miles through the flats of the Meadowlands you will reach Garrett Mountain. I want you to go to the very top and stand on the edge and lookout over the view that takes in every Jersey town all the way to the Empire State Building in NYC. {this is the highest point between a population of over 7 million people}. Now pick up an imaginary stone and throw it in any direction. I'll bet it will land on the new girl of your dreams." Years later in a bar he sent a drink over to me and I waved a thank you back. When I tried to send a drink back his way, the bartender said he refused it. I went over to see why. He said, "You can't buy me a drink because I owe you my life. That day when you spared those kind words of advice you stopped what I had planned. I was going to buy a tape and go home and put a gun in my mouth and pull the trigger". I have never stopped budding into other peoples business since. You never know what that kind word will do. Dean, keep up the good work. I was just at K-Mart with a friend of mine who was looking for a CD. I decided that I would check out the Jewel merchandise, and make sure it was in proper order at the front of the rack (regardless of aplhabetical order), and other such things. I was quite impressed to see that there was a display up front with a few POY CD's on it, when I saw what would be my entertainment for the next twenty minutes, or so. It was a big TV screen on top with different musical selection buttons. I was so amazed to find a POY button that I don't even know what other albums were featured. After a brief encounter with the Energizer Bunny crossing the screen, the WWSYS video came on. I was a bit disappointed to learn that it was only a 30 second clip, but hell, I would just have to press the button that many more times. I looked for a volume control, but found none. But, there were about six little television sets around the maximum security audio/visual section. Sure, the little kids didn't like it when I told them it wasn't a toy and they should go find their mother ;) but hey, we all have to do our part. Between presses of the button I took a look at the LOAD album by Metallica. The cover looks indeed as advertised. Now, whenever I'm down, I'll ride on down to K-Mart and everything will be alright. ******************************************************************************* Affix you favorite quote here. I've been a longtime fan of Amanda's, having had the good fortune to see her play the club circuit in her hometown of Toronto for the past 5-6 years. But then Amanda released her debut album, and instead of it being the raw, bluesy, honest stuff I'd been watching her play in the clubs, it was more like manufatured pop made for mainstream radio. She got teamed up with corporate writers and producers Christopher Ward and David Tyson, the same ones behind Allanah Myles. And guess what? It sounds like an Allanah Myles record. I like about 4 songs, but am generally very disappointed. She's an excellent singer and interpreter, but her real talent is lost amid the gloss on the CD. ttyl, Dan - --------------------------------------------------------------------------- DAN STARK NEW E-MAIL ADDRESS danstark@mnsi.net NOW IN EFFECT!
