All here hope the album will be finished by August 9th, because on that day she'll begin three weeks worth of dates opening for Neil Young -- yes, that Neil Young! Jewel will take a two-day break from the tour to headline the State Fair in her home state of Alaska (August 23 and 24), and, many frequent flyer miles later, will rejoin the tour and see it through to its conclusion at Toronto's Molson Park, where she and Neil will be joined by Oasis and the Gin Blossoms. Be sure to check out the new Rolling Stone, which features a great article on Jewel's recent success. ======================================================================= So it looks like there are a few she WON'T be at (I should have said this when I posted Neil's schedule...sorry) but it's confirmation of the rest, so that's cool. ------------------------------ From: "James H. Judd" Date: Sun, 23 Jun 1996 00:45:10 -0500 Subject: DAT-Heads: General Questions and Formats http://www.execpc.com/%7Eporettma/faq1.html (that's a DAT FAQ on the web with lots of techie info) From the site: What is DAT? Digital Audio Tape is a new format to store music developed in the mid-1980s by Sony and Philips. As digital music was popularized by compact discs, the need for a digital recording format for the consumer existed. The problem is because digital music contains such a high volume of data (over 5 megabytes of data per minute before error correction and supplementary information) an aggressive way of storing it is needed. Prior to DAT, the only way to record digitally was to use a video deck or a reel-to-reel, not convenient consumer products. Something i found really cool(but i'm a geek): On an analog deck, you try to keep the average at 0 dB and the peeks above 0 dB. But a digital recorder is not capable of recording any signal at all over 0 dB. If you go over the 0 dB point, it means complete annihilation - the end of the universe. In other words, severe clipping distortion. Sometimes you'll go over 0 because somebody bumps a mic or there's a pop in the P.A. system. That's OK. Hope that does it, James(who has secretly purchased all of the JewelStock Tshirts Muahahaha! ;) ____________________________________________________________________________ Computer Science/Engineering www.eng.auburn.edu/~juddjam Auburn University Auburn, Alabama Eng. Went CD shopping today; Media Play had PoY in its top 10 albums (yes, on the big display at the front of the CD section), so it merited a discount. Picked up a spare copy; surely I'll find a deserving soul who needs to hear it. Best Buy also put PoY in its "hot" section, though at list price :) Our Lady Jewel is definitely on her way at last. Plenty of copies on display in both locations, indicating good sell-through. I haven't seen a used copy in months. A quick note to embarrass my daughter Toni, who is also on the list: her new band played their first gig tonight and were enthusiastically received. They didn't have the Jewel cover tunes ready to perform yet, but they played a number of original compositions, several of which Toni wrote or co-wrote music or lyrics. However, unlike Phish concerts, most coffee house shows don't have a tapers section where people with $1000 recorders and $2000 microphones congregate. 8) Unlike Phish, (and more relevantly), Dylan and Young fans, few here have the equipment to tape with DAT. Jewel's popluarity has mushroomed in the last 6 months to a year. You just don't see many DATs of people who have performed probably 90% of their concerts in sub-1000 seat venues. > Please I know people have Jewel shows on DAT and could they not only help > out a Jewel newbie but also a DAT newbie. There are very few Jewel shows on DAT that I know about and wouldn't have bet on their existance. But speaking of DAT newbies, anyone willing to spin for a tape and return postage to help me along send a list. 8) I just got one a little over a month ago and am still at 0 hours. Personally, I've found the fabled "community spirit" of the DAT community to be quite exagerated. >> There have been people in the group jabbing me with opinions on this situation. First of all for the people who don't know what DAT is. It stands for Digital Audio Tape, the tapes are smaller than regular tapes and unlike regular tapes when you get to the 4th or 5th generation there is no hiss to the DAT tape. I understand that for most bands that allow tapers ex. Phish, Blues Traveler and the Black Crowes most are DAT tapers. And for smaller artists, there isn't a big circulation for it. BUT MOST SHOWS PEOPLE, were taped on DAT but then transfered to regular tapes. I know that I will be taping Jewel concerts on DAT whenever I can see her, therefore hoping I can help circulate and make it more accessable for people with DAT to get her shows on DAT. I have gotten responses from a few people (thanks) who have shows. I think if everyone who had tapes or DAT whatever saw a newbie post to help someone out it would be better for the Jewel community. I didn't mean to cause a big controversy in the Jewel community but I felt I had to be heard for all the DAT newbies and regular tape newbies. And of course people anyone who have shows on DAT email me. And any newbie to Phish who wants tapes email me. Is Jewel opening for Neil Young on all of his concert dates because if she is I will get tix and tape his Jones Beach and MSG shows. When is Jewelstock and what club will it be at. Thanks everyone! I treasure the many bootlegs I own of my favorite artists. But if I step back and look at what I'm doing by purchasing these illegal copies, I would see this is one of the worse forms of thievery. First the artist is robbed. If I went into your home and stole your music collection I would be considered a petty thief. But when we steal the heart and soul of an artist it seems OK. This is what they bleed of. We are like voltures licking up every drop for our own pleasure. We complain about crowd noise, quality of the recording and most of all the price. What price can we put on the artist loosing control of there intellectual property. Shouldn't they be allowed to decide what piece of themselves they want to share with us. All the arguments about how much some of the mega-artist make won't work. The effect of tolerating this trickles down to the artist that can least afford this kind of loss. The record companies compensate by signing fewer fringe artist giving smaller contracts to the real artists. The fan looses the most. I hate going to concerts that are only replays of the CD. No new material. No slow or fast or electric or with dialogue version from the artist that fears the instant bootleg. What happened to the live radio shows that would let many of us at least hear sold out or distant shows. Some of the sellers of this material are good people. Some are great fans and love the music. But for the most part they are organized criminals and will sell anything for a buck. You are helping criminal activity. I do not offer a solution, but would like to hear your thoughts. It would be wonderful if there was a trend with artists releasing legal copies of there concerts. If Jewel or anyone poses for photos for someone, does that mean they are meant to be seen by the world? Or are they really just for the person's own private use? How does she or any celeb know what someone may or may not do with photos? I have several pics that were taken of Jewel dressed in clothes that were appropriate for, say, a eighty/ninety degree day on the beach. One of them with me which I have added in small size to the Jewel Gallery on my new and newly improved website Pieces of Jewel (http://home.sprynet. com/sprynet/xenomorph/jewelmn.htm) But inside my head, I feel uncomfortable adding all the others because I just don't think it's appropriate. I know that women wear bikinis on the beach to get sun and swim, not to be gawked, stared and drooled at. Then again, she did her soundcheck in a bikini but I was the only fan there at the time. And then she later posed for these pics, sun and Gulf water drenched and seemed very comfortable. I was amazed at the time that she offered assuming she'd want to look "nice" and "appropriate" for any photos of her. I also know that Jewel has been online. Has she seen my website? Does she read any of this list? Does she look for her own content out of curiousity? Seems like she would if she was online. She knows we're here. This is a women who didn't have television, phones or indoor plumbing until six years ago. So these are the questions I pose to everyone. How far do fan rights go? If I get a large number of bounces for anyone, I move them to the digest for a few days hoping that the situtation will clear up. This includes bounces due to subscribers having a full mailbox. AOL seems to be particularly bad about this. If I still am getting bounces after I move someone to the digest I will probably end up removing them from digest list altogether.
