I love Jewel but I don't have a single show. There have been quite a few analog trees, and the prospects for many more are great. However, unlike Phish concerts, most coffee house shows don't have a tapers section where people with $1000 recorders and $2000 microphones congregate. 8) Unlike Phish, (and more relevantly), Dylan and Young fans, few here have the equipment to tape with DAT. Jewel's popluarity has mushroomed in the last 6 months to a year. You just don't see many DATs of people who have performed probably 90% of their concerts in sub-1000 seat venues. > Please I know people have Jewel shows on DAT and could they not only help > out a Jewel newbie but also a DAT newbie. There are very few Jewel shows on DAT that I know about and wouldn't have bet on their existance. But speaking of DAT newbies, anyone willing to spin for a tape and return postage to help me along send a list. 8) I just got one a little over a month ago and am still at 0 hours. Personally, I've found the fabled "community spirit" of the DAT community to be quite exagerated. > Thanks everyone for listen to me and hopefully to realize it > is about spreading the music around. This group has done (and continues to do) a **GREAT** job of spreading the music around. Just not in DAT format. Not that much of it exists in that format, few on the list have the capability to listen to it, fewer can record on it remotely, fewer still have the capacity to duplicate it, and what little does may have been scared out of ciruclation by talk of bootleg CDs. bob ------------------------------ From: Patric Oesterheld Date: Sat, 22 Jun 1996 20:50:28 -0400 Subject: don't bash other artists Karl Fields wrote: >Alanis M. sucks live (or so I've seen on TV). Alanis does have some live stuff out there--on all of her imports, as well as an unplugged set called "Space Cakes"-Japanese-. All are incredible, and show a tremendous set of pipes. Sorry for the non-Jewel stuff, but some of us do like other artists-there's really no need to bash other artists. After all, didn't your mom tell you that if you can't say anything nice..... Ok,Ok...just my take on the CD copy controversy- The copying of tapes to CD, as long as it is done for $0 profit, is no different than having them on tape. Even more, if it weren't for a 7 year old Onkyo, I wouldn't own a tape player. And another thing- there was once a group called the Grateful Dead that never had a bootleg CD of them pressed by KTS or Hawk(the bootleg gurus). Anybody know why?? It was because there was at least one tape of every concert they ever played ALREADY OUT THERE!!! If anybody can get it by sending in a tape, they won't show up in stores- hence the lack of L.Loeb,etc. CD's. Sorry for the length- If you didn't want to read this far, you would have gotten here;) "I find that the things I worry most about almost never seem to happen anyway"-M.Lloyd-A professor of mine who just found out she has breast cancer--all of us should be so brave! Also, as far as musicians on this list goes, I can kind of play trumpet. I used to be good, but I quit after eight grade. And finally, for Chris, I don't have anything of Jewel on DAT. In fact I only have POY, and besides that, I don't even know what DAT is. I am sure that if I had any of it, however, I would share it with all. Re: bootlegs: I've noticed that, while there has been some talk about tape trees and such to distribute tapes (I do seem to have missed much of that, having joined in mid May), there seem to be a greater preponderance of requests FOR tapes, than offers of them. It seems that those who have tapes must likely be overwhelmed with requests for copies, and this list seems to be growing fast enough that the prearranged tape trees are not filling all of the need. I don't have any Jewel tapes myself (YET), but I'd like to let anyone who's feeling a little overburdened to know that I'm more than happy to help make copies. (My own tape collection at the moment is mostly limited to Debbie Gibson shows, which I don't expect there's much demand for on *this* list, though if anyone happens to be interested, let me know) Re: DATs... It doesn't seem that surprising to me that there aren't a great deal of DAT tapes out there yet. Bands that have been touring across a lot of states for many years, like Phish, Blues Traveller, et al, have provided a lot more opportunity than the much younger Jewel. I'd be willing to guess that there will be tapes showing up over the coming future, as she's getting to tour across a greater range of places, so is more likely to show up at a venue where someone with a DAT is going to go. (I'd also guess that DAT recorders are also not as common, so not every show is going to have someone with a DAT.) I have the recording walkman DAT myself, and I'll no doubt try to catch the next appearance she makes in my area, but I've missed the previous ones by not finding out in time to go. (I found out about one, just the other month, the night of the concert. I almost tried to drive in to see if I could catch part of it, but it was already almost 1.5 hours after the listed start time.) Of course, even if I'm able to make a DAT recording, I don't have a second DAT to actually make copies yet, so I'll end up sending out cassette copies anyways. (have a dubbing and a single tape deck, both Sony) As far as a brief introduction about me: I just turned 27, and I'm a unix systems administrater in the San Francisco bay area. I'm not a musician, but I'm in process of starting to pursue some classical music training. I spent a fair amount of time in the production rooms at my old college radio station, as well as doing some remote broadcasts and such for said station. I still have an interest in radio, and the music biz, but various circumstances and choices have meant that I wasn't able to make time to pursue my interests for a while. I'm now starting to make those decisions that will take me where I want to go, but it's probably going to be a slow start as I try to figure out where to begin. I can't really remember when I first heard of Jewel, but I knew I was impressed with her skill at lyrical construction and vocal delivery style from the first song. (And of course, I noticed her angelic beauty from the pictures, which is surpassed only by her amazing presence as I have noticed on a live TV appearance or two.) BTW, I'm on digest form, so if you happen to ever followup to anything I ever post on this list, feel free to (please do!) copy me in on it so I won't have to wait until a digest generation mark to know I offended you or whatever :) Ray Wong PO BOX 6163 negativl@netcom.com, negativl@best.com Hayward, CA 94540-6163 "Isn't it ironic that quite a few people are starting to observe examples of irony because of a song that contains none?" ------------------------------ End of jewel-digest V1 #295 ***************************
