So if anyone needs an MBA in Finance to catapult their company to new heights (or depths), LMK! I discovered Jewel just two weeks ago. I bought a CD for my room and a cassette for the car so I'd never forget to bring her in or along. My favorite song on Pieces of You is I'm Sensitive. I especially like the lyrics about taking stuff away from the cynics and giving it to the faithful (to paraphrase). Also, for those of you who must have anything and everything with Jewel in it there is a small picture of her in the June 22 TV Guide. Its in associatoion with a Conan O'Brien story. A sidebar mention her, but that all. Well nice to meet ya Pete! and Hola to everyone else on the list. All I do now is play the stock market to pay for rent and DAT tapes, and that's until I find some initiative to work as a securities analyst for some brokerage firm. Then I'll have to dress in stuffy, starched shirt for many, many years. Ugh..... Prices for blank 74 minute 'roms > run about $12. I was going to let this whole topic go, but it's still interesting. The blanks I have been using myself (sony) cost me $6 each. That took some hunting. You can easily find them for under $8 even in small quantities (e.g. from MEI micro). If I were going to burn a cd for someone I would probably just ask them to supply whatever kind they want. I have seen exactly one cd player which would not play the green-surfaced ones (actually it was a cdrom drive). As for labels, I don't trust the stick-on kind, so I use a (wait for it) blue sharpie. Well, ok, it's a black sharpie, but when it runs out I'm getting a blue one. For anyone who is thinking of burning audio cd's, remember you will need some way to digitally record the sound (say, input into your sound card with recording software) and *650 megs* of local disk space in which to store it (assuming 74 minutes' worth of music -- 30-50 megs per song, which you will probably need to have in separate files). You can't record live from an audio source onto a cd. You also can not add tracks later to a burned cd. ------------------------------ From: ajb187@psu.edu (A.J. Bucci) Date: Tue, 18 Jun 1996 08:33:09 -0400 Subject: [none] O.K. guys, here's the deal. I'm at work right now, I will buy the CD (if it's still there) after work. I need a fair way to distribute the CD. The only thing I can think of, is the person that can offer the best deal, giving me tapes and such of other concerts will get it. I don't think that it would be fair to the first person that got the message to me because they might have been at there computer. So, I'm willing to drop some money off of the $30 price of the CD for every tape of great quality that you can get me. The only tape I have is of the one at Penn State that turned out incredibly bad. I only paid a buck for that. I would say $3 would cover buying the tape and labor (dubbing the tape). That is $3 a tape, not $3 a concert. Don't put 3 25 minute concerts on 3 different tapes and think that will count as 3 tapes, you would put them all on one and then that would be about one tape. 60 minutes is the minimum amount of tape that will be considered a tape. O.K. everyone?? I'll give you all until Thursday to give me your offers. And don't flood me with tapes, I'll only accept at the very most 3, because I'm going to have to borrow the $30 for the CD in the first place, I don't have $30 for ten tapes. So 3 great quality tapes and a money order for $21, 2 great quality tapes and a money order for $24, or 1 great tape and a money order for $27, or finally a money order for $30. I would also need a self addresed stamped envelope, remember this is the CD and the "jewel" case. I'm not going to pay for the postage and envelope for you. I will if you add an additional $3 to the money order. I looked at the CD when I was there, no scratches on either the case or the CD. I hope this doesn't sound bad or something, I think this is a very fair way to do this. I don't think that it would be fair to you guys or Miss Kilcher if this CD was auctioned off, right?? I just want what everyone else here wants. Music by Jewel that is of great quality and to have the ability to spread it around to her fellow fans. I'll try to get back with you later today. So, let the offers start. If I here of a deal too good to pass up, this may end before Thursday, because my internet connection will end on Next Thursday. I'm working as a temp at a college about 20 minutes from home, and when my work here is done, there goes my on ramp to the internet. Any questions?? Email ajb187@email.psu.edu Thanks everyone. A.J. Discuss. >FYI: Uma Thurman's first big time screen role was in Dangerous Liaisons. > >-steve > > FYI: I think you're confusing the one time movie rating X with the made up rating XXX. One time not so long ago (60's I think), the X rating was a true movie rating by the rating people (who are they). This had nothing specific to do with sex. Some movies received the rating due to excessive violence, profanity or other mature subject matter such as portraying drug use. The skin fliks realized that the controversial rating drew crowds and "made up" the XXX rating. The relatively new NC-17 rating was designed to take the place of the X rating so as not to confuse people into thinking about porn movies. NC-17 doesn't necessarily mean that there is explicit sex scenes. A movie could get the rating due to excessive violence as well. Though I don't think any have to this point. At least that's what I was lead to believe when NC-17 was first being tossed around as a new rating. It sort of seems like one of those anonymous meetings, where every is like: My name is Jon, I'm 20, I've been addicted to Jewel for 3 months, and I'm not trying to quit. I'm going to be a Junior next year and I've got brown hair. Over the summer I'm doing programming for an x-ray telescope that should be going up in a (very big) balloon this fall in New Mexico. I've been on the list about 2 and a half months, and I have posted once, when I realized I wasn't going to be able to get a Jewel concert that I had tickets for. It was a little late to let people know about free tickets, but I figured that otherwise they would go to waste (unfortunately they went to waste anyways :( Oh well). A couple of comments about the thread re: Drugs and Alcohol. People almost invariably have their own opinions about use, abuse and disuse, and I have never met someone whose opinions were changes by rational arguments about them (of course, it could be that I haven't met the right people). This isn't to say it hasn't happened, but I bet that the Jewel mailing list is not going to cause someone to rethink his or her life-style choices (though Jewel and her music may). So I think that it's probably good that that thread has faded off, and I hope that I haven't revived it. Someone was talking earlier about Vertical Horizons being a male counterpart to Jewel, and I agree. They are a very interesting group with excellent voices that go very well with their lyrics and music. I'll admit that I'm biased, since one of the principals went to my high school, a former teacher and a friend recorded their first album (_There and Back Again_), and the third song ("Footprints in the snow") is about my school. But I think other people would still like them a lot :) Also, there was some talk about Tom Waits with good lyrics but less than great voice. Holly Cole just came out with an album (_Temptation_) where she sings some of Tom Waits' songs. It's very good, very well recorded, very clean-sounding music. (If you're looking at stereo equipment, it's a reasonable CD to use, along with Jewel's Mr. So and So, and Jennifer Warnes' _The Hunter_) I think that the first movie that Uma Thurman was in was Johnny Be Good, with Anthony Hall, where Hall plays a football player being recruited by various universities and Thurman is his girlfriend. I think that was closely followed by Dangerous Liaisons and The Adventures of Baron Munchausen. Well, I'll wrap this up now. It got a bit longer than I expected, and I don't usually use so many parenthesis (but maybe I do and just don't realize it). Hope everyone has a good day and keeps looking forward to Jewelstock :) Take care, - - Jon ------------------------------ From: derrick.karacostas@utmb.edu Date: Tue, 18 Jun 1996 10:22:20 -0500 (CDT) Subject: trivia Jewel trivia question: On the PoY CD, how many songs begin and end with the same sentence? I just noticed this last night. I've been listening to it for awhile now and always 'thought' she was repeating some lines on some of the songs. I heard the 5/27 concert from Orlando last night for the first time, and I must say she sounded really good with the band. I like the idea of having the band for about half the show. She picked good songs for that as well. Especially Race Car Driver, and Rocker Girl. I love Jewel solo, but if she's going to have the band, I think it's good that she's still doing about half her show acoustic solo. Does anyone have the MTV House of Style Prom edition with Jewel recorded? I've been searching for that and really would like a copy. I only saw it once but was caught offguard and didn't get a chance to record it. Thanks for any help.
