Some people want Jessica others would like the new band oriented stuff such Love Me Just Leave Me Alone) one of my personal favorites. While I have already said I would be happy with whatever Jewel does, I was listening to "Under the Water" and I thought I would be great if Jewel decided to be "all over the place on the next album" she could have some songs more along the lines of her older stuff. She could also through in some of the bluesy rock type stuff that has surfaced with the band, but why not throw in some more heavily produced pop (I know some people think that's a dirty word) sounding songs along the lines of "Under the Water." She has the versatility to pull off many different sounds from Tracy Chapman to Poe. I would love to see her defy labels and put some of everything on the next offering. I know some critics have said she hasn't yet found her voice. What I don't understand is why does she need to be pigeon-holed? That's why I'd love to see her throw in right back in their faces by proving she can do many sounds and do them all well. pjk - -- "Proper treatment will cure a cold in seven days, but left to itself a cold will hang on for about a week" - Henry G. Just a reminder, mailing list design ideas are on display at http://www.auburn.edu/~juddjam/pics/tshirt/index.html Also, we are still looking for new ideas. If you have an idea for a design throw something together, make it a jpeg, and mail it to James at James.Judd@Eng.Auburn.EDU If you have an idea, but can't put it together send a description to me and I will set it up and put it on the web page. As for JewelStock, the design can be seen at http://www.auburn.edu/~juddjam/pics/tshirt/JewelStock.html I have actually changed the design slightly the angel is white and the guitar is a gradient from midnight blue to light blue to recreate big blue. Some of the lines in the design have been altered as well (I haven't sent the update to James yet). I have sent hard copies of the design to Hiranya, Lenedra and Jewel and I am waiting to hear back from Hiranya with comments so more slight changes may be coming. The JewelStock shirts will sell for $10 at the show (just over cost) and $12 (to cover shipping) over the list afterwards. Basically, right now as soon as we get a date for the show they will go to print. The mailing-list shirt will sell for somewhere between $10 and $15 depending on the winning design, color, and style. They will probably be availible in August. Voting on the design will take place at the end of June / start of July. If we can avoid annoying each other for a week, it's a safe bet we'll still be willing to drive to Jewelstock. :) More to the point, we'll be unable to readily reply to Email for a week. I might be able to read mail and reply to high-priority messages, but it's not certain. Depends on how much time I can scam on a net-connected machine in the lab where I'll be working. Toni won't even be able to read mail, for technical reasons. She's had problems with her account, so hang in there if you're trying to contact her. ObJewel: found the Atlantic "First Quarter" promo disc with the remixed YWMFM and popped it in the CD player. Toni and I stared at the player, then each other, open-mouthed. If anyone has access to this version (on whatever media it's been distributed), play it back-to-back with the version from PoY. You can hear how a rather nice, folksy tune with clever and meaningful lyrics has been transformed into an ordinary pop song by merely omitting a few words and glossing the production up a bit. I'm not too impressed with the remix; Toni was rather more negative than that :) I appreciate Jewel experimenting with the re-recording, but I think this is an example of her getting it right the first time. I think I've been able to nab a copy of the Australian WWSYS single with "Emily" on it. Long story, but if it works out I might be able to point list members to an alternate foreign CD source where we can get things like this (for a price). I got the US-unavailable "Glow Stars" by Heather Nova from the same place, and they seem to be willing to accept foreign orders. I am 26, almost 27 and I am a dept. manager at a Target store. (BTW, last week as a chain Target sold over 1,700 Jewel CD's, up from about 100 a week a few months ago) I enjoy all types of music, from Jewel to Alanis to Patti Rothberg to the Refreshments. I try to go to clubs at least once a week just to kick back and listen to local or brand new national acts. In HS i played tenor and alto sax in a jazz band. I have played the piano off and on for about 7 years and just got a guitar a few weeks ago. Still working on changing chords without stopping for a sec (any tips anyone?); the last day or so I have kinda learned to play Emily, though at only half the speed Jewel plays it. This list has been great for me, along with Jewels music just corresponding to all of you across the country has done a lot to helping me get rid of some of my cynicism (sp?). I always thought it was a shame that he made such an incredible contribution to the list, and didn't want to let it be openly known on the list that he put together those two tapes, especially since he did such an incredibly good job on both of them. I've always thought it was incredible that someone would do so much for others with very little recognition for his efforts. Although it must have been gratifying to know that Jewel herself was impressed with the quality of the Rare Angels tape. I think Rare Angels is about a year old now. Think about that. For an entire *year*, Dan has been going about quietly putting together a couple of the best fan-produced tapes I have ever seen, and without expecting any thanks from the people who are benefitting from his labours, save for a few people who have been on the list a long time, and Lenedra. (Sometime, Dan, I think you should share with the list the story of what happened at the Opera House... it's quite a funny and definitely unique story!) Bunches of decent bands, but not real great. To the point, here's Jewel.... Wearing (for those who care) a pea green top (like the silver one she often wears), a short yellow/orange skirt (I hadn't seen her in a skirt before, it was kind of odd), black heels. She looked very tan. Those days in San Diego sure help. She also looked really blonde. As for the set..It was very short. Solo. PoY with Cranberries story and Bob Dole/Bon Jovi part. 1000 Miles Away (I hadn't heard this live before. Very nice.) Kiss Your Ass (This one either...not sure about it.) Little Sister Carnivore. (I like the band better, but solo was good) Near You Always Daddy (with the usual story) (Her normal Thank You story here, a little shorter though) WWSYS (only a 10 sec or so Yoooooouuuur...oh well.) Chime Bells She actually yodelled. No one I could hear was yelling for it. Couldn't tell if she was enjoying it or not. Noc's weren't that good :) That's it! A very short set. She looked radiant but trying to follow the loudness and fullness of Garbage is really tough and she did very well. She begged for fans to crush the guards, leap the fences, and come off the GA lawn and into the Expensive Seats (since there were so few people there.) No one seemed to care much. SF crowds are really hrrible at these outdoor festival shows. Especially alot of alterna-teens in their Kurt Cobain shirts. (I counted only 6, down from 10 last year. Really.) Jewel did an interview on the radio, but the show was NOT simulcast. It usually is, I think. But they didn't. Maybe because it didn't sell out? I should be getting a copy of the interview (a friend said she got it. She also heard Jewel in the background but that they were interviewing someone else during it.) and will tell all, if no one who heard it steps forward first. If you went, hope you enjoyed yourself. I missed you. If you didn't, you didn't miss much. Saw no jewel merch, at all. And she didn't sign (as far I was told by staffers). They said she had somewhere to go after her set. Is this true, or was I lied to again? (Hiranya?) I can see that she would need/want to get back to recording. In the program, (am I recreating the event for you?) Balcony Pisture in B&W. Short Bio: musical family...hit road...six years old....travels with ...soil...reminder of where she came from...single "WWSYS" heard... Pretty standard stuff. Did anyone go the Sacramento show that Hiranya mentioned? End of Jewel stuff, but more on the show below. I was disappointed by Lush (much better indoors). Afghan Whigs cancelled cause Greg is sick (damn!) Garbage was good, but ware much better with a light show. No Doubt was No Doubt. Joan Jett was OK..pretty straightforward RnR. Dishwalla was surprisingly good. Cast was on stage. Brit-pop. The rest was not good enough to mention, nor bad enough to slam, IMO. I first saw Jewel on a little thing on SoundFX (a cancelled show on the ubiquitous FX network) and have looked for her music anywhere and everywhere since then. Up until now I've only found Pieces of You and one of the promos in a little music shop (when the owner saw that I was interested, however, the prick said something about it being the only copy in Washington and jacked the price to $25, an unfortunate number to an unemployed 16 year old). And now to the crux of my mail (even though I'm sure you all LOVED hearing about me, right?): I've got to ask, would anyone mind if I showed up at Jewelstock? I mean, some places don't like it if kids appear in certain places (concerts, bars, etc.). So, if nobody would, I would like to attend. I've never seen Jewel live (heck, I've only heard what's on Pieces of You and a couple Real Audio clips from some show or other) and I figure what better time than Jewelstock?
