The only songs I can see being played are YWMFM (which has), I'm Sensitve (cutsie), and Morning Song (upbeat enough). Remember, this is commercial radio we're talking about here, whose only concern is the maximum # of listeners they can target. This usually means the more obscure, but no less good, songs will not get airplay. College stations, on the other hand, will play what's good. Our station here at BSC plays Jewel quite often. (A big part due to endless requests each day made by someone who will remain nameless. Honest, it wasn't me.) If you call up and request a certain song enough, (Could you please play a Jewel song, but not WWSYS. Thanks.), they might catch on and set a new trend in radio, where crap is not allowed on the air, and every day there is the "Jewel Hour", an endless party of Jewel tidbits and rare songs about the lounge lizard convention she attended somewhere in Nevada, and the ozone is restored, and John Denver plants a rainforest, and peace is restored to the galaxy. (Peace for the whole universe would be a bit tricky.) Just my opinion. Yours Jewelly, Chris ------------------------------ From: "James H. I agree with you 100%. Music and drugs are two different levels. Most people I talk to are like, "Oh, you play guitar?" I nod my head as I'm leaving and I hear a whisper. "druggie!". Guess no one except for other musicians can understand. To put the way I feel in Layman's terms, Look at what happened to Kurt Cobain (sorry to bring him up after all this time). He was so screwed up on heroin that he convinced himself no one understood, no one felt the way he did, yet the fans were pouring into his shows. That's just a little proof that music was making him popular, and drugs were tearing him down. So, the feelings from drug use are exactly the opposite of those contrived from music. As far as a venue and date, we are in a holding pattern until Lenedra chooses the venue. The last we heard was that Jewel was going to start recording on June 18th, but since Hiranya posted that JewelStock had to be from July 10th to the 30th, it makes us (Bill, Akira etc) wonder if the June 18th date was pushed. Akira is still taking EMAILs about "date preference vote" and "are you attending and if so, how many" so that we can get a handle on that stuff. In the background of jewel@smoe, the T-shirters are going at it, and an audio recorder has likely been chosen. We are working on having an Online/Web Site "Map to JewelStock" once the venue is chosen. However, like I said, we are sort of in that "holding pattern" until more is decided. Music and drugs are two different > levels. Why is it that many non-musicians assume that EVERYONE in music is using drugs. Especially, like Mikey said, even with people that are in small bands and simply mention that they play guitar. Do they think that people in bands that are making $50 a night (sometimes if they're lucky) playing clubs, even have that kind of money. Sure, they could afford pot, but that's about it. Maybe it's true that the people that are raking in millions (e.g. K.C.) can afford heroin, coke, etc. But everyone associated with music? Personally, I've never taken drugs, so I cannot speak from experience, but music seems to me to definitely be a better escape. Music can either be positive or negative, and you can do what you want with it, but in the end, hard drugs are nearly always negative. I don't know why so many great people sell themselves short by putting themselves through that kind of hell. Music stimulates the emotions and makes us think, while drugs end up robbing people of their individuality and in the end they cannot feel at all. Sorry, If I sound like some arrogant, ignorant fool. I am a twenty-seven year old hunka hunka burning love who was a baseball star in the Majors for a couple years, then went to Hollywood where I made critically and commercially successful films without compromising the integrity of my work. I became bored with Tinseltown and decided to write, draw, edit, print, and staple comic books and I succeeded in producing the most successful comic book in history. Then I grew up and all these dreams were dashed by reality and I became an 18 year old (birthday Oct. 1st, same day as Mark McGwire) college student who played the cello since he was five (still considering finding a bass guitar or even a regular guitar and stringing it like a cello) and is experimenting with the length of his hair (trying to make a ponytail, but with the humidity, finding that his hair gets poofy and wavy). And I post too much for everyone's own good. Where the hell are the rest of my leaves! I've been seeing quite a number of posts from people who don't drink or don't smoke and laud Jewel for not smoking, but where are the people who do drink and smoke? Where's their side of the story? Just wondering, you know cause each coin has two sides and all. Hey James Reach, how long you been on this list? I miss Neile and her sobering and mature posts. Anyone up for it? The drug thing. I guess people do drugs because they give sensations that can't be realized in any other form. Does it really have to do with altered states or escapism? i don't know, maybe. Some people I know smoke pot and drink and their realities are fine. They just like the feel and the release of inhibitions, I think. And do drugs always lead nowhere, are they a dead end? I think that maybe some of the most celebrated thinkers, entertainers, whatever, did drugs and wouldn't have created such mind expanding materials if not under the influence. Maybe not. I don't know enough about drugs to say any of this with any certainty. Just musing from the other side of the fence. Definitely the most high-energy >Jewel song that I've heard to date. WARNING: Opposing viewpoint ahead! Wow. I'm sorry to have to say this, but I will. I totally disagree with everyone that loves this song... It's nearly my least favorite Jewel song. Despite a couple really interesting parts and well written lyrics (it _IS_ Jewel after all), the song strikes me as quite conventional and uninventive. I would expect to hear songs like this from any ol' local blues-rock band, but not from Jewel. The song is driven by a standard blues-rock chord progression as opposed to the songs I really love which are driven by Jewel's incredible melodies (Foolish Games, Near You Always, I'm Sensitive... etc.). If you like blues-rock then you probably like this song... you may also like, say, Springsteen or Bob Segar, I dunno... I don't. (yeah... I'm stereotyping... but I can't help myself... don't be offended if I'm wrong about you, but please let me know none-the-less) I suppose that Jewel is enjoying the addition of the new band members and this song seems to be more of a collaboration, or jam, kinda song. Personally, I haven't really been too excited by the addition of the band... I much prefer the songs the way they are on PoY where it's mostly Jewel with some subtle accompaniment, piano, or strings. On a positive note, the one new song that I really like BECAUSE of the band is Marital Carnaival. Go Jewel! Michael Szabo PS. Please don't get angry that I'm asking this... but I know I've heard the little melody that Jewel sings to the words "Love me just leave me alone" in another song by another group... perhaps something by the Pretenders? It sounds alot like a Chrissy Hindes (SP?)...
