Hopefully, the still unread mail doesn't already address this. I have to disagree with you here. I think this particular concert should just be for people who already love her music. Even that isn't specific enough: it's supposed to be for US LISTERS who really love her music. If you're not on the mailing list (or at least closely connected through someone who is), and ESPECIALLY if you're not already very familiar with her music, then you should just hafta wait for a regular concert - this one is special. I don't want to sound like Brett here, but I've got a theory that the smaller and more intimate the venue, the better the show that Jewel puts on, so I'm not excited about expanding this audience. (I applaud your desire to convert the heathens, however :) This is not to say you shouldn't bring a friend (whether they're big fans or not) to help you drive and such. But if you bring anyone who is not instrumental in getting you, a lister, there, they should have a special reason for being there themselves (like: they're your significant other, your best friend, your kids (IF they love Jewel AND you're not worried about Jewel's use of language), or someone like that...). A specific number limit to guests is inflexible though, so if we enforce some number, there should be someone to appeal to in special circumstances. And a new lister voiced concern about the push to get a list of current members and have a cut-off date for eligibility for this show. Yes, this is exclusionary and I agree that it would be off-putting to new members, but I feel the issue is about having participated on this list for awhile (whether you posted or just faithfully read the messages). Again, that's what this concert is about - it's something special Jewel is doing for US, the people who have been a part of this list. It's unfortunate that not everyone who would want to be on the list has found it yet (or in many cases, just found it), but... Since no one is in a position to judge the value of someone else's list participation, a generous cut-off date seems most reasonable to me. If by some chance, only say, five people can make the show, then by all means open it back up to absolutely any lister, but I don't think that'll happen :[ Aaron ------------------------------ From: Dan Stark Date: Mon, 10 Jun 1996 02:00:12 -0400 Subject: "Jewelstock" Follow-ups Hi, Thanks to Steve Ito and the others who brought up concerns about our organizing committee and thought of me as an alternative. I have to admit I shared most of the same concerns as things started to happen, and it was good to see them addressed on the list. But it looks like everyone who wants to help organize has stepped forward, and it seems like each one has a role and there's some good teamwork going on, which is great to see. I'm way too tied up with other commitments right now to take active part in organizing, but I told the crew to let me know if they run into any problems they think I could help out with. I think we're in good shape, since this is a show Jewel has offered and wants to do...so it's not like we have to try and convince her to come, just get the venue and timing down as she has requested. I'm sure Jewel and her management will be fascinated to see how a group of fans on the internet who don't even personally know each other and have little-to-no concert booking experience are able to arrange this for us! It should be a real learning experience for everyone. Good luck to the organizing committee, and let's give them our support! It looks like the most common suggestion is to write an article or recap of the event, and then give it to the reporter after the fact. Also, this way, we might be able to include some pictures of the event for him. I would be VERY satisfied with this method. The reason I thought it would be a good idea to have some coverage, is that we often hear about artists who basically screw their fans for some reason or another. I think it would be nice for Jewel to be publically recognized as an artist who really appreciates her fans. (especially since she is getting some negative vibes from the media over the frisbee incident). Also, the nature of his column (Cyberpop - internet music news) seemed very appropriate for this event. Here's hoping it is a concert worthy of the front page! Sure the concert won't cost much to attend, but to get to the concert is a whole different matter. For people on the West Coast, it'll cost a few hundred dollars for the plane fare, not to mention hotel arrangements. For those who are taking the cost effective route by driving up, they still need to put in a huge time commitment to go see Jewel. Thus I have a feeling that the casual fan will not be in attendence, unless they live near the concert area. People were already inside the cafe at 6:30, even though the show wasn't supposed to start until 9:30. She came on 1/2 an hour late. I didn't mind the wait too much. When she finally arrived, she past right in front of me and through the crowd to get to the stage. I could only bring myself to stay for 4 or 5 songs. They over sold Java Joe's. It was so hot and I couldn't breath, I was seriously ready to pass out. I figured people would probably step on me to get a better view, so I had to leave. I think Jewel's coffee house playing days are over. When I managed to squeeze my way out of the place, there were people outside trying to catch a glimpse from the windows. She did play a song she wrote that same day. It was about southern california. I forget the name. She must have wrote it on the beach in between catching waves. Her hair was the blondest I've ever seen it. She said she went surfing and she looked it. And she said she was trying to cut down on her swearing. I guess she's resorting to obscene finger guestures instead. The only way I can see to protect ourselves (if people are really that worried) is to have some one get the names of all the list people who are coming and check them at the door. I don't mean check ID's. Just check off their names when they arrive. If word does get out we will have to discourage people by stressing it is a fan-club (in this cases the mailing-list) only show. I really don't think we should have to worry since Woodstock is far enough from even New York City a lot of people aren't going to drive a couple hours just because Jewel is giving a show. She isn't that big yet. I stress the world 'yet' in the previous sentence. Also, as one person mentioned, you have to be looking for Jewel info to find out about the mailing list. It's not like a newsgroup where people will just go drop by and find out what's up. Hiranya has been extremely helpful and was instrumental in getting permission for me to record this event. For those who care about the details on how this will be done, here they are. I plan on patching a DAT recorder directly from the board. In addition, I may set up microphones to capture some room ambience. I will then blend the two sources . To successfully blend these two sources a few factors need to be considered. If its a relatively small venue they can be blended easily. If the venue is larger, time alignment becomes neccessary because the signal from the board will reach the decks prior to the microphones signal. By running the board feed through a digital delay I can synch both signals so that a perfect blend is achieved. This will provide the best of both worlds. The clear (but dry) definition that the board direct signal provides with a little room ambience to warm up the sound and get the feel of the actual room. My apologies to those who dont care about these things. I just wanted to let you all know whats hapnin. And big thanks to those who've posted in support. I appreciate it. Now on to a slight update on the first tape that I've gotten permission to circulate (as soon as I can get it to Dan). It will be a wonderful DAT recording of the John Anson Ford Theater show from May 4th 1996. This was the 2nd public performance with her band. As a bonus track I'll include the Jewel & Bob Dylan encore duet on "I Shall Be Released" from the Strand Theater in Providence,RI on April 18th, 1996. This was the last of the 5 gigs she did with BD. Dan will post details on how to attain copies in the not too distant future. If anyone has any other questions, feel free to email me.
