I can't believe the silliness surrounding the "t-shirt war." There is no rule that one individual or group has to produce the official jewel list t-shirt. I have seen some very good ideas described. I don't have graphics capabilities over the summer. :( I can only access the web through lynx, which is text-only. I believe that if different people want to produce shirts, they should go for it. Since there are over 400 of us, not everyone will be able to agree on a certain style. So why not give people a choice. If someone was working on a t-shirt idea and feels they were pushed aside, I think they should move forward with their ideas. :) I sure know that i didn't elect anyone to be the "official jewel list t-shirt maker" :) Or maybe i missed the balloting ... did it occur during the "great rainbow belt crisis"? :) I think it is a perfectly good idea to have competing t-shirt designs. No one should perceive competing t-shirt designs as an indication of hatred or disdain for other people's ideas. But realistically, i sure know that i wouldn't wear a LIME GREEN t-shirt in the privacy of my own house, nevermind wearing one in PUBLIC. :) So i think there should be some choice in designs! Now I realise that the whole purpose of the "official jewel list t-shirt" is to identify other list members...so my suggestion would be that any of the designs should incorporate the list's email address. Also, i might not be the only one without graphics capabilities...so when people say they are going to put a design on the web...could you include a verbal description of the design to the list? I know that there's all this excitememt about JewelStock, but 100+ messages in 24 hours is a bit excessive. I don't think people are reading their mail before posting things -- I've seen a lot of the same messages over and over. And I know that out there, somewhere, is someone who is organizing a car pool list, so instead of flooding my in box with a message that you need a ride, just write them, and if you have a ride to give, the same should go for you. The more people post things the harder and longer it will take to get things done. I liked the idea of setting up a separate Jewelstock mailing list, but since that might not be possible, might I suggest that people who have information to give/ask about Jewel wait until this whole JewelStock thing blows over, and let that be the major concern for now. I hope I don't sound like a kill-joy; I'm just trying to make life a lot easier for list subscribers and the even organizers. I feel that postings from them should be read first to re-assure all of you that things are at least somewhat under control. We are not perfect nor are arrogant enought to think that we are. However, we do have a good feel for this sort of thing, otherwise we would not be volunteering to do this. Please keep in mind, because of Jewel's choice of where to record her next HIT CD, this "fell into our laps". Venue organizers have to live near the venue. If this was happening in Detroit, Dan Stark would likely be the Grand Poobah in all of this and others would've risen to organize this to the best of their ability. Rest assurred, we plan on doing our best, and we do need some advice, good advice. So anyone who wants to input concern, feel free to do so. However, please try to keep it brief and to the point. We are reading virually every EMAIL (at least I am) and I am sorting all that have anything to do with Jewelstock into (so far) 15 different category_folders for easy reference. This event WILL happen. It logistically cannot be to everyones' liking, and some will not be able to attend soley because of the date chosen. That is unfortunate, but that is the case with every single event on the planet. Remember, it is still very early in the game, but there is likely not much time to pull it all together. Afterall, Hiranya just posted this bombshell 48 hours ago and hasn't been seen since. More on that to be mentioned later in this EMAIL. Venue Organizers as of now: NAME NETSCAPE etc ADDRESS PRIMARY FUNCTION Akira akira chi3@ix.netcom.com venue/information to list Bill Goodliff -------> BillSA3@aol.com venue Mike Connell Mike Connell ducksoup@spectra.net venue/information to list Mark Nissley crunch nestle@ptd.net venue setup/accomodations Dan Stark Dan Stark danstark@MNSi.Net overall advice There are others with many skills who have offered to help in ways that their skills can be utilized and some of them will/may be called on when that time nears. Right now, venue and date are the primary concerns and have to be addressed initially. Carpooler organizers/coordinaters have surfaced. The Venue organizers wish to remain removed from that area as we feel they can do this as their own committee, so to speak. Keep up the good work Carpool organizers!!! T-shirt organizers for the concert have risen also. My advice to you is to WORK FAST! We cannot hold up anything for that part of this, but I feel you do realize that. IMPORTANT!!! at the very least, CC any EMAILed comments/advice for the VENUE ORGANIZERS to myself, Bill and Akira (the others at your option, but advised also), especially if you post it to the whole board (jewel@smoe). That way, any of the organizers who get the Digest and not the individual EMAILs, will also get a seperate EMAIL that they can "see" quicker than browsing through and waiting for the digest, and get any valuable ideas or whatever easier and faster. (The digest, from what I hear mails out a few times a day) Knowns/Unknowns 1) Hiranya posted, in a nutshell: It must be on a weeknight, late night after a day of recording for Jewel. All must be co-ordinated by list-members and approved by Lenedra. That's it, short and sweet. 2) Hiranya has not posted since early Friday morning. Hiranya left a fax number in one of the posts, however it was a 12 digit number (10 is all one needs), so Akira and I strategically lopped off two numbers here, tried the number and a man answered, lopped off two numbers there and a fax machine answered. So then we've sent at least 3 faxes to Hiranya (at least the number we believe is Hiranya's fax machine) and have yet to recieve a reply. We (Akira, myself, Bill and the others) need MUCH, MUCH MORE INFORMATION FROM HIRANYA and maybe Lenedra BEFORE a date and venue can be realistically considered and chosen. Such as: a] When exactly does Jewel start recording for sure? A previous Hiranya post from late May said June 18th. b] How long is this recording supposed to last. Two weeks, three weeks? A month? We need to know. c] What is the maximum distance from the recording studio that this thing can be held, there are alot of potential venues. Does it have to be within a 30 minute drive, an hour, 2 miles? What? I know for a fact we can get a venue right here in Binghamton (2.5 hours from Woodstock) for NO RENTAL cost, the venue gets all food, drink revenue to make their share (The director of the Binghmanton Summer Music Festval just told me this this morning) We are looking into this kind of arrangement at the Woodstock area. Keep your fingers crossed! From what I've heard it can be set up so that over 21s get stamped and can buy drinks, under 21s buy soda and the like, and all buy food. The ideal set-up if we can get it, lower cost, lower price to the Jewel fan and the venue gets their money! d] are any specific weekday dates/nights OUT do to previous Jewel commitments? We know weekends are out for that very reason; shows she already has scheduled. BTW, for those of you wondering, July 3rd and 4th are out according most of the venues already contacted in the Woodstock area. I myself do not know the reason, Akira can expand on that one. e] Does Jewel intend to fly solo on this or are the 3 D's or a band going to be involved. Important info (maybe) in choosing a venue. Concensus is is that she intends to fly solo. (Like any Jewel fan wouldn't feel that is the case) 3) Date to be chosen. Frankly, I don't see how a date can be VOTED on. Maybe a favorite "DAY of the week", but that remains to be seen. There are many other concerts/shows that go on this time of year in that area. Viable venues may only be available for a precious few days that fall into our tight requirements. We are not saying a "vote for the date" (or day) is out of the question, it just may not be a practical way of chosing the date, when that time comes. Alot remains to be seen. Time will tell. 4) Cost/number of guests per person. Very much up in the air. I ahve had no input nor major thought on that one. In my humble opinion, I feel 2 or 3 maximium guests per member, if we can't get a big enough venue, it just may be one guest per. Time will tell and I think the other organizers are going to handle that one. In summation, It's very early in the game and we NEED TO HEAR FROM HIRANYA ASAP!! But it is very important to get the ball rolling now, so that when we do get more info from Hiranya, we can really move fast, having done alot of legwork already. Be grateful Hiranya posted this on a Thursday, having the weekend to work on alot of this right off the bat helped immensely!! Keep those EMAILs coming in with viable ideas folks. But remember, this may be a difficult task, but it may just turn out to be a heck of alot easier than we may think. It's important to keep this moderate sized, likely, as most people have reasoned already, it will be in the 200 to 400 or 400 to 700 range. The time frame we are looking at is July 10 through 30. If the group is too large, she will do two nights. She could do a Thurs and consider a Fri in addition if needed. Any night(s) between 10-30. At this time it looks like she will do it solo. If the session musicians were available (or one of them) she might add them but plan for solo and anything else can by impromptu if venue allows. Venue should be twenty minutes from studio preferably. L will talk to someone there about a likely spot and get back to me. She has never been there. If there is a charge, Jewel wants it to be very low and cover the club only. Otherwise, she will assign a non-profit to get the funds. Maybe victims of the Alaska fire. She wanted it to be free as a thankyou, as posted earlier, but if people want it could be for those who lost everything in the fires in Ak.
