Are you sure you're able to handle it? Putting together a show is a lot of work! You'll need to put money up front to rent the hall, security, equipment, and any other details that must be pre-arranged. Don't count on mail-in orders for tickets to come through before you arrange and pay for all this. You'll also have to go to Woodstock to check out possible venues and book one. And you should plan to arrange for an all-ages license, since many of the list members are under 21. I don't mean to discourage you, but it IS a lot of work. If you have experience booking shows, are familiar with the area and can put up the necessary cash until showtime, then great! If you're not sure though, then I'd suggest you be careful about how much you volunteer to do. If that's the case why don't you try e-mailing Bill Goodliff ? Bill lives in the Woodstock area and has already volunteered to try to find a venue that he knows would be good. What fantastic news; as someone else said, POP. OK, now I've popped and I have a brain again. Just a couple of comments about the fallout. Let's remember to be good guests here: we've been invited, generously, to join in something lovely. To *join,* not to take over or to direct. Let's let Ms. Kilcher tell us when and where she'd like to pull this off. Kind or no, she's a professional. It will be great that some of us can help out, but it's her gig after all. Voting for dates and for states? Ahem--Not. I think Jewel has given us an opportunity here to repay her kindness with kindness: rather than posting what dates we would like her to perform, or trying to cut latecomers out of the process, it would be nice to see us all trying to, for example, make sure that our friends on the list can come--this could involve hotel information, ride pools, sharing resources. What I mean is, let's put all the organizing energy to work on ourselves, not on Jewel, who after all has her own life and appears to be doing pretty well with it. I, for example, have no car (but can easily get to Woodstock on my own steam), but could put one or two people up in New York City prior or post, if need be. I might be able to organize a little bit of camping equipment (lost my good old stuff a few years ago), or pay the bigger share of a hotel room split with one or two other folks who were shorter on cash. No, I didn't say all of it, I'm a workin' stiff. That having been said, let me just add one other thing: WOO WOO WOO WOO WOO WOO WOO, far fucking out! Ciao - Linus P.S. - I'm glad I saved this before sending it off and finished reading the digests that have been piling up these last few busy days: the talk has become markedly constructive. Makes me feel good about the world. Still, I'll send the above. We seem to have hit a good stride, so I hope I can be another step in it. Bill Goodliff ------------------------------ From: Steve Ito Date: Sat, 8 Jun 1996 04:21:21 -0400 Subject: Woodstock - a suggestion The organizers seem to have selected themselves for the job of organizing, rather than the vote that usually occurs in large groups. I know I personally would have liked to have a few candidates describe their qualifications and experience so that we could take a vote. Organizing something like this is not a trivial job, and there are a hundred things that can go wrong. And if a hundred things *do* go wrong, a lot of people are going to be upset and out of a lot of money, and when do you think Jewel will ever do something like this again? It's a big responsibility, and I hope they aren't organizing just for the glory of it all. I'm not saying that these people are incapable of doing the job, but I sure would appreciate some kind of assurance that they can. I know very little about the backgrounds of any of the organizers... and in the case of Akira, before he volunteered to organize the project, I counted a total of two posts to this list, hardly enough for me to get any sort of read into his character. How can we be confident that he is capable of organizing such a project without knowing anything about him at all? I would like to have at least one person who genuinely knows what they are doing in the organizational committee, even if just in an advisory role, (although I would prefer that they are active organizers). For example, I know *I* was happy when Alan Bershaw offered his services for looking after sound. I was happy because he gave some background on his qualifications ("I've mixed and recorded live performances for a living for the past 20 years..."). It makes me feel more secure that the sound is going to be OK. I think the same should be done for the organizers. One person I have in mind as someone who might help organize, is Dan Stark. Here is a guy who is in the music business, who's been on the list a long time, and has the trust of a lot of listmembers here, especially older listmembers. He made a very insightful post in digest #251 about things to consider about organization, one of the very few that have appeared since Hiranya made that stunning announcement. For example, he wrote: >Whoever is organizing should check with the town to see if there are any >special licensing or bylaw considerations for what will essentially be a >private party in a public venue. We'll also need to apply for an all-ages >permit if it's in a bar and there is a demand for it. These are the kind of things I want the organizers to check out, BEFORE the cops knock on the door asking for a permit. Dan's not really close to Woodstock (hence his not volunteering to help organize), but I think we should definitely recruit his services as an advisor anyway. I hope no one takes this post the wrong way. I'm not slamming Akira, Mike, or any of the others who have volunteered to organize, I'm glad that they have, otherwise we would have no concert! But a nasty little part of me worries that perhaps they aren't capable of doing the job on their own, and the reason is simply that I really don't know anything about any of them. I have no basis to put my trust in their organizational skills, or knowledge of what needs to be done to stage such an event. I would simply feel more comfortable if someone like Dan was overlooking things from a distance. Also, I invite our organizers to tell us what their relevant experience is. I'd like to see them doing jobs for which they are most qualified. Thoughts, anyone? Steve - ----------------------------------------------------------------- Steve Ito, | "Life is pain, Highness.
