I live in Rome, NY..which is in upstate NY..about 1 1/2 hours from Woodstock, NY. If you all agree to it, I could make arangements with hotels in the area and try to get this thing worked out. I would probably need one person to help me out thou. Since Jewel doesn't want it on a weekend it will make it alittle tougher for the people out of the area to show..but I'm sure it will be worth it. I could find a club that would take the gig on a Monday or Tuesday night. Most clubs are slow at that time of the week. Maybe around July 15 or 16th or the following week 22 or 23. I would need a list of people from this list that are commented on coming to Woodstock or a area real close to there. We would need to set a ticket price and how they would be sent out. First of all, I really think we need a cut off time for who is on the list to get into the concert. When I got the message, I immediately got the impression that this would be a *PRIVATE* concert for *US*. If the concert is in July or August, that leaves a lot of time for others to join this list merely for the concert. Second, I think we need to address guests. Some people have husbands/wives/boyfriends/girlfriends/really good best friends that aren't on the list but don't feel they need to because their significant other is. I think each member of the list should be able to bring one guest. Finally, if this concert will happen later this summer, we should try to get the t-shirts done by then. We can probably sell a good deal of the shirts at the concert and then sell the rest, by mail, to those unfortunate people who live out in Utah, or some other God-forsaken Western state. :) If we can't have it on a weekend, could we try to at least have it close to a weekend so that half of our traveling time could be during non-workdays. And could we not make it any later than mid-August; some us have to go back to school. I've never seen a live Jewel concert, and I'm hoping this will happen so I can see at least one Jewel concert before she hits the BIG, BIG, BIG TIME. So, all you out there, please try to figure out a way to cut the guest list off *NOW*. Hey everyone, Wow, what good news!! Hopefully everything will pan out with this special concert and it will be an incredible time for us to cherish. With as many people coming from all oever the country as it sounds like there are coming maybe we should think about planning some other events to do. Maybe a little sightseeing or a barbeque or who knows what we can think up. I wouldn't want to drive all that way from here in Arizona just for a night and then come back right away. Does anyone else want to do something extra, maybe make it a couple day event? And... I will most likely not have the airfare money, is anyone out here in the west (CA, CO, AZ, NM, etc..) planning on driving out there? I have a pickup so maybe we could get a little Jewel Caravan together and cross the country together. Anyway... Wow, this sure made my day just the thought of this happening! Take care everyone, Jeff ------------------------------ From: Dan Stark Date: Fri, 7 Jun 1996 03:35:28 -0400 Subject: Re: Woodstock list concert! Hi, I think the Woodstock idea is fabulous! Here are some of my thoughts: - - The venue won't have to be large, since it should hopefully be mostly list members and their guests, and I think _mostly_ just those in the northeast will be able to travel in for it. It might be possible to reserve a small-medium bar in the area for a "private party". If it's an off-night, Monday for instance, that might even come free since the bar owner should be happy to have more people than usual in his place on a weeknight. A place with its own stage and in-house PA system for bands would be ideal. The bar would also likely have its own "security" people who could be hired to keep things in order at the door. The other option I can think of would be to rent a hall. Kinsmen, Knights of Columbus, that kind of thing. This would probably mean a dry show, but it would also open it up to the under-21 people (though we could possibly get an all-ages permit at a bar too). On top of the hall rental, at least one rent-a-cop or security person is likely in order, since there will be party-crashers if (when) word gets out. - - Even if Jewel plays a free show for us, there are obviously going to be expenses that someone will have to be brave enough to put money up front for. Hall rental, security personnel, and equipment rental come to mind. Whoever is organizing needs to determine what the total cost will be, and how many people on the list plan to come. Do the math to determine what it works out to per person, and then plan to charge at least double that amount per person at the door. That way, even if half the people are no-shows (which is inevitable), the expenses are covered. Any surplus might go to charity, how about the sick kids fund the poster proceeds were going to? - - I suspect a guest list at the door is the better than fooling around with tickets. My vote is we can all bring as many guests as we want, as long as they accompany the list member who must show ID. Everyone would have to pay the door charge too of course. - - A Monday or Friday would probably be better than something in the middle of the week, so people who need to book time off work can arrange a long weekend. - - Whoever is organizing should check with the town to see if there are any special licensing or bylaw considerations for what will essentially be a private party in a public venue. We'll also need to apply for an all-ages permit if it's in a bar and there is a demand for it. I'm not close enough to Woodstock to do the kind of organizing that will be necessary, or I would probably volunteer. As long as it's not during the week of August 6 (when I have another commitment) I'll go, and can probably take a couple people from the Detroit/Windsor area with me. - - Whoever is organizing should also probably not mention to bar owners, town officials, etc. who the performer is. "A private party" should suffice. We want to keep it among the list members as much as possible, right? - - What kind of time frame are we looking at for a date? Would any of the band be likely to come out with Jewel? Would a sound guy come along or would someone be needed to run the board? Is there anyone here within range of Woodstock willing to do this stuff? That's all I can think of for now. Over & out... I think word is likely to get out on some other internet forums about it, and we may see a few people jump on board for this, but anyone interested enough to join the list and drive all the way from wherever they are to see the show probably deserves to be there just as much as any of us. After all, I have to be seriously interested in an artist to drive even an hour to see the show no matter what the circumstances, and I don't think Woodstock is in a very populated area. Maybe we can ask Jeff to save a copy of the current membership list so we'll have it as reference just in case, but I really don't think it's going to be a big problem. The way her popularity has been jumping lately, I wouldn't bet on it being small and manageable unless we're careful. We must keep this underwraps, just on this list. And the Idea of letting each person just bring 1-2 guests is a good one. I hope we can have this be small and intimate, and just true fans. To those who don't seem to think we need to worry much about keeping a lid on it, I would like to share an observation that is fitting as Jewel finds herself gaining incredible exposure right now...Last year, Alanis Morrisette played at the Bottom of the Hill, a little rinky dink club in SF that tend's to have fairly unknown bands. 2 month's later, she's beyond huge, and now look at how disgustingly popular she is.
