If you are pressed for time don't bother reading this. I agree with you. Why does everyone have to have a political opinion. I always feel like a blundering idiot everytime someone asks me who I am going to vote for. I really don't care who wins. I know that a few elections aren't going to change much. At least not the things that I really care about like being able to look out my window at the trees, feeling the wind in my hair, seeing the sun rise and set everyday. Political matters just seem so trivial to me. Most of the time it is just a popularity contest. I do not frown on politics. Most of them try to do what (they believe) is right but it is all so confusing. I really don't feel that anything needs to be changed. Laws can not change people's hearts. Congressional acts aren't going to stop murders or racism. Maybe someday the world will see the world from another angle. I have always believed that although it may be raining today, someday the sun will shine and we have no control over when or how but if we keep our faith that it will we will manage to salvage our sanity in the meantime. I could be wrong here. I am young and still developing opinions more then I am stating them. I am a mere one year younger then Jewel. I guess I fell so hard as a fan because I can relate to her so much. I listen to interviews and hear so many of my own ideas. I admire the fact that she is living her passion. I am a little reserved. I am having trouble figuring out what my passion is. I just hope that when I find it I will have the courage to pursue it. Basically I think that Jewel does not have to have a political opinion. Who cares what society says we should care about. If you really care about politics, that is great, but don't frown on us simple people who don't need anything else to worry about. I wonder if anyone in the studio audience is on the list. Or if they were just a bunch of lucky bastards. I'm dancing around cause people around the world can now hear advertisements for a store in a town where I went to school. Actually, Waxie Maxie's isn't in Bel Air. It's more in the Abingdon area. That's Maryland. About 20 minutes from where I live/d in Aberdeen. And I didn't know that she sang the Anthem at Camden Yards. That's the Baltimore Orioles hame park. Beautiful place. I wonder how them O's liked her. The stadium holds around 45,000-47,000 people and it pretty much sells out all the time, especially last year with Cal Ripken streaking away, so at least she managed to do that huge audience thing. and it was probably a lot more quiet and respectful while she sang there than at the HFStival. Until the "Oh say does that star-spangled banner yet wave" bit at the end of the anthem at which the whole stadium shouted "O" as the tradition requires. The t-shirt. I say don't go with those people who contacted the person with the webpage. If they charge 18.50 or so for the shirts, scrap them. That's pretty darn expensive. I think you can check out any silkscreening store or t-shirt store anywhere and get them cheaper. I know that Amherst College radio made shirts and they cost $6 bucks for staff members and $10 for anyone else. And they ain't cheapo shirts either. The design. I think we should go with a normal t-shirt. No special type like a polo, or a tank-top, or those retro-soccer types, or whatever. Just a t-shirt that isn't tiny or huge. The color is gonna be hard to decide on. Lime green ain't that happening with me. I have too many black shirts. And I've found that white shirts designed by non-pros often turn out crappy. How about puce (white with pink polkadots) ? just kidding. Blue like Big Blue might be cool. I don't know. I don't know how to convert pictures to gifs or jpegs, so I don't know if I can contribute any pictures for the design. I like Memoirs of a Housewife. No Jewel on the radio concert tonight. Bummer. Let's start a flamewar! Yeah! Ok that's enough of that! What's with all the LTD's? blah blah blahblahblahblah. Got my report card today. Fared well. Maintained my B+ average. Woohoo! Yes! Aq and Kath! haha. I love them guys. They were better at night, but they still kick ass in the morning. She cussed on the radio! She's loopy. I'm listening to the Radio Angels second side. I'm gonna go now. Let's start some top ten lists of stuff. Waste more bandwidth. (No that wasn't in any way supposed to relate to the song "Chime Bells" and if you think it was that needs to be added to Carter's obsessed list.) There are a couple ways to handle it. 1) One person designs and does everything, including contacting the printer, and then if you like the design you order and if you don't you don't. Pretty simple for the mere peons a little more complicated for the master because he/she must organize the whole deal. In return he/she make a little profit on each shirt. 2) People submit ideas (designs) to one person who scans them in his/her web page. (Or they send them already scanned, of course.) We all check them out and send our votes to one designated person who tallies them and announces the best design. Someone gets the printer stuff worked-out, someone tallies the orders, and someone gets them and ships them to fulfill the orders. This is more democratic but it can be a problem if someone on the team slacks off. It also has to be known if the people involved are doing it on a volunteer basis or for profit. I'm sure there are many other ways to do it (and in no way do I profess to be an expert) but these are the ones I've seen commonly. Oh, and usually they do have the listserve address... Just structure ideas... Peace, cj ------------------------------ From: "Kevin M. Wall" Date: Mon, 3 Jun 1996 19:57:44 -0400 (EDT) Subject: Random thoughts Hey everyone. Someone say it isn't so!! They're the 2 coolest female singers around now-Boy I hope this doesn't escalate at all. Can't we just get along people. - - One final thing that happened tonight as I listened to POY. It struck me during Foolish Games that I've lived the song-being the guy in a past relationship that went kind of like she's singing about. I didn't understand You might be right about the people who see more than one show. But who do you think the yellers are? They certainly aren't the ones who have been fans for a long time and have seen her before; those people a) know other songs to request and b) know that she does the yodelling song at the END. No, the yellers are the ones who are there at their first Jewel show, who have seen her on MTV or something and have heard that "boy, can this girl ever yodel." That's the key, by the way. If they've never seen a Jewel show before, then they could never have an opportunity to "get the picture." The thing is, Jewel's yodelling song is NOT the problem. With the kind of casual fans Jewel draws now, rude people will be there yelling for something or other whether Jewel yodels or not. Cutting the song is not going to solve the problem. What a case of throwing out the baby with the bathwater! Doing the popular songs, including the yodelling, at the beginning, just might solve the problem, because those idiots will hopefully leave early. The fact remains for me that the yodelling song is a great song. I think if there is a way for her to save it, then she should. That all said, if the real issue here though is not the rude fans, but simply that Jewel hates doing the song (which there does seem reason to believe), well, that's a different story. If Jewel doesn't feel like doing the song, then she shouldn't do it. I hope this isn't the case though. I think. Sure, my personal fashion tastes influence my opinion here, but to go with Rafa's idea of what I think is one of them there late 70's early 80's type shirts with the shirt being one color and the neck line and sleeve trim be another color would basically cater to the hipsters of the current generation. I don't know how many people on this list are into that kinda fashion, and I apologize if I offend your style and tastes. I just don't dig those shirts. I feel that those type of shirts, like other retro clothes such as bellbottoms and tophats, had their heyday and were laid to rest for a reason (though I don't know what it is). I can't fathom why people go back to styles that were scrapped a few years later and deemed hideous and frightening to children:) I guess the fad industry is running out of new ideas and has to recycle old ones. I guess it's about time I throw my 2 cents in. I like the t-shirt idea, but I keep thinking back to a David Spade (or maybe Adam Sandler, or maybe I'm completely off) quote regarding someone who wears the artist's t-shirt to the concert: "Don't be that guy." Despite this, I would still buy the shirt. As for color and style? Well, God knows I have enough white t-shirts (as do most other people on this list). So, if the shirt is white, I vote for the "ringers". If the shirt is a color, I vote AGAINST a neon color. No fuschias or chartreuses. Ringers are fine with me either way. I know it's asking a lot, but I would love the shirt even more if Jewel herself had some input into this. Perhaps a drawing or idea from her? We are a special group of people and, definitely, devoted fans. I don't see how she could turn us down. As for Paul's comments on fashion. First, what is wrong with recycling ideas? Should any generation be denied a fashion choice merely because it was used in a previous decade? Even though I feel a little old around college kids these days, I still love this new look. I even bought a "ringer" myself. And besides, how you can not like a t-shirt emblazoned with WONDER BREAD or CURIOUS GEORGE? It sure beats the Hell (sorry, sabra :) ) out of all these damn Carolina shirts I see every day. I do agree with Paul that we should please the most amount of people while turning off the least amount of people. So, in the spirit of democracy (and to those political types out there, I AM NOT MAKING A POLITICAL STATEMENT), I say we put it up to a vote (duh?). If we have a web page with design choices, we can vote for the design on a ringer t-shirt or on a plain one. I don't know if they took the offer or not. Secondly, the washington post had something to say abou the incident this morning. It read: "Onthe main stage, Everclear held forth in the midafternoon and gave the crowd a sing-along revved-up version of Tom Petty's "American Girl." Jewel was next and opened with an a cappella songon domestic violence, Tracy Chapman's "Behind The Wall." She may have been performing it in during her shows for a few years now, but with her single just now hitting the top 40 I'm sure there are plenty of new fans going to her shows for the first time, hoping to hear this yodelling the media is talking about. I think Jewel is used to performing for small crowds who are musically-aware and have a high appreciation of her artistry and talent. Her hit on MTV and modern-rock radio changes that though, doesn't it?
