The live shows are much more rocking than the album might suggest, and she's pretty riveting on stage--an excellent guitar player, too, and picking up some of the stagecraft tricks: at her last Tramps show in NYC she played her electric behind her head, etc. Most of the guitar solos are hers. I think comparisons to Jewel are pointless, because they're off in very different directions. Jewel is excellent at what Jewel does, Patti is excellent at what Patti does. I've met Patti briefly and she's genuine and fun, and seems a bit bewildered at a career suddenly, er, careering ahead. And her Mom is definitely as cute about it all as Jewel's Mom. Re: Jewel's "truckdriver" mouth--hell, I talk like that. And I've never appreciated people who pretend to be ladylike for the masses. Just my pair of pennies, but I'm surprised to see people nitpicking about such an issue... And BTW, it's Patti Rothberg. With an 'E.' As in the German "mountain," as opposed to the German "town." Shut your ears! Flee the evil! Run Dean RUN! Just kidding- the opposite is true actually- read on. I wonder why Jewel is rather left in her political orientation considering she worked her way to a brighter future for herself. That's the republican spirit. I think she'll come around. Otherwise, she'll be voting herself into more taxes ;) Seriously though, it amazes me how many people follow what their parents follow or don't follow what their parents follow just because of their parents' view. I'm not a hard core republican, but consider myself a conservative. On some things, Rush Limbaugh doesn't go far enough- on others, he's out there. Ask yourself why you vote the way you do. Anyone who votes for Klinton just because Jewel's a supporter needs to reconsider their respect for our system. Investigate the issues yourself, and read on both sides of the issue. See which argument you agree with. Gun control is my big issue, as well as personal freedoms. Economics are up there too- personal and national. The thing i like about republicans over democrats(the only 2 parties who have a chance of being elected for now) is their smaller central government ideals. Big government is a huge sucking sound(to quote a Ferengi-like guy) right here inside our borders. Enough of that- enjoy my cassingle pics. I have been on this list a week and have noticed a few things. Everyone in general is good-hearted on this list, i mean who could be a true cynic after listening to Jewel sing? But it seems to me that people have opinions/beliefs/whatever about certain things. Some of the opinions are justified; i have no problem with those. But it baffles me how anyone could disavow something without prior knowledge, background, etc. What i'm trying to say is, whether or not you like a particular performer/musician/band/etc., it shows a lack a respect to yourself when you laugh at them. i mean, most bands try to excel at what they do, i respect that, it takes more than most people think it does to play in front of an audience or record a album. At any rate, how would you know if someone wasn't trying to hone their craft? a checklist 1. be sure you know what you are talking about, you will get flamed otherwise. 2. be respectful, constuctive criticism if fine, but not a mouthful of negativity. i guess that's all i have to say. sorry if it sounded to "van driessanish" if you don't know what i meant, then i guess you'll never know. well, i'm audi here. peace, love, and empathy 2007 Fighting for peace is like phucking for virginity--"anonymous" I hate free boards, you can't curse! I also don't remember her playing Under the Water. Did she Aaron? Anyone else on the list go to this show? The crowd was pretty rowdy. I noticed that a good number of folks were quite suprised that she played songs they didn't know. Had that, "is this it?" look on their faces. I requested quite loudly (next to my friend who shouted "FLOWER!" the whole time and got a response of, "Flower...") "GGTW" & got a response...I saw a lot of shocked faces when she played this one. I can only hope that those guys looking for T&A got her message. :) BY FAR, Foolish Games was the most passionate of the songs that was played. Jewel was so enraptured in this song that I almost cried. She was wonderful!!! At one time she was hunched over and her face was red. Couldn't tell if it was stage performance or not. The thing is many people have different interpretations of the smiley face... whether it be a sly one or a regular one. Me, i don't take em too seriously. Sometimes i put one in a post to show i was joking and sometimes just to signify that i myself was laughing. >Anyway, thanks for clearing up your intentions, and use that >semicolon liberally or keep us guessing! I mean the difference between LOL (Lots Of Love) and lol (laugh out loud) Some people don't even know about it or don't agree with it while others use it. We have to remember that on the net first of all there will be newbies (we all were once so be nice people) who write to the list "Jewel I love you!!! When will you be in my town" not knowing that this list is about jewel not her own personal address. So people will misconstrue. I am often too quick to write to people when i misunderstand what they mean. A lot of flames come out of that. On to more important things. This little political discussion i have started. I don't fu*cking think so, ok? Jewel is not telling you how to vote... And also jewel is not don henley. I don't especially respect his opinion... Anyway even don henley telling you how to vote is better than a politician. Guess i'm being a little pessimistic but lots of politicians just want votes and use really shitty tactics to get them. Most of the time artist don't have some kind of hidden agenda. They may make their decision more based on issues rather than the party line. >Okay, the references are dated and the attitude a bit extreme, but it says >what a lot people think. A TAD extreme. Personally jewel knows her audience and a majority probably agree with the "bob dole is an asshole" just from what i know about jewel and what i know about him and what i know about jewel's fans. It is her perogative to include politics in her performance and her songs. >A creative artist will find a way of saying exactly what they feel in a >way that will illuminate instead of alienate. Unless they are just >trying to get a few cheap cheers from the audience. Again, if jewel really thought that it would alienate fans a lot she wouldn't say it or maybe she thinks she doesn't need that kind of fans. She was probably also doing it to entertain and to get a laugh. Don't fault her for trying to get a laugh... I would say that she was trying to educate instead of illuminate or alienate. It's like Rock the Vote... It's about getting people invovlved. I'm thinking that she was at least trying to get us thinking. Just as she does in her songs. Sabra wrote: >Personally, I feel Jewel has not progressed past this stage of getting >"cheap cheers". I would welcome any comments about this. Wondering: Is it cheap when authors use profanity in their books? I mean some people believe there is no place for profanity at all anywhere. Fact is there is a place in our vocabulary and it does have a purpose in some uses. You may not like the profanity but MAYBE it's the best way jewel can find to convey that emotion. A lot of people might say that it's an uncivilized way to talk but that's the words she chooses. Would pieces of you be as strong without the word "faggot" ? Of course not... Big government is a huge sucking sound(to quote a Ferengi-like guy) >right here inside our borders. Aarrgghh... I can see where this conversation is going. Okay. Let's be very clear about this: The difference between Bill Clinton and Bob Dole (just like the difference between the "Democratic" party and the "Republican" party) is analogous to the difference between McDonald's and Burger King, or between french fries and onion rings, or between Coke and Pepsi. It's MINISCULE, folks, and just about no one, it seems, has heard of haute cuisine, or of brie, or of Burgundy. Gun control, school prayer, abortion, welfare mothers... these are the morsels tossed out for public consumption by (and distraction of) us unwashed masses to wrangle over while "our" elected officials, Democrats and Republicans alike, almost all of whom had their campaigns paid for by the likes of cigarette companies and corn syrup manufacturers, attend to their REAL business of transferring wealth from the many poor and middle class to the comparatively few rich. (There is a greater disparity of wealth in this country than at any time in its history, and certainly more so than in any other Western "democracy.") Do you think ADM gives money to only one party? So even as the third-worldization of this country continues unabated, and even as military spending continues to suck us all dry even though there are NO wars we want to fight, and even as the bill of rights becomes a piece of toilet paper to be flushed away as the NSA and Congress pursue ever more-draconian limitations on our rights to privacy and to free speech, you, James, are free to lie awake at night worrying about the IMPORTANT issues, like your right to purchase an AK-47 and buy cheap bullets at Wal-Mart. So, what's it going to be? Fries or rings? Remember, it's YOUR choice. Jack ------------------------------ End of jewel-digest V1 #233 ***************************
