First, yes mud slinging is still a means of earning votes. But people don't realize that in the past it was much worse than now. Rather than bore everone with many examples of this, I'll only sight one. During Lincolns bid for the presidency he was constantly harassed by false accusations. For instance it was suggested that his wife kept many lovers in the form of slaves which Lincoln owned. Of course at the time this was bad in many ways. First, she was being unfaithful to her husband. Something that was pretty much unheard of at the time. Also she, a white woman, was supposedly sleeping with black men. Another serious taboo at the time. Also the fact that a man who talked about freeing the slaves and equality for all man was accused of owning slaves. Of course now we all know that this was simply false ideas the opponents tried to use to defeat Lincoln. During this period of history there weren't strict laws against slander and people could get away with this defamation of character. Now we have many laws that hold people accountable for the lies they attempt to spread. Simply put, if you slander someone in an attempt to defeat them politically or financially... you can lose your ass in court. So keep in mind if a politician doesn't fight back agains accusations, there is probably some basis in truth behind the accusations. Hmmm.... maybe I shouldn't send this. Ah, what the hell. :) I feel I must have some Jewel content. "I Got the Blues More than You Do Blues" is one of my favorite old Jewel tunes (lets face it, they're all favorites). Does anyone know if she still performs this in concert on occasion? I haven't seen it in any of the set lists. You are right, Always is "Near You Always" The Wall is "Behind the Wall" Also Jewel played four more songs I forgot to mention in the original posting: Daddy Rocker Girl Deep Water Little Sister The concert was the last on her tour so the Duncan Sheik and Jewel Bands were celebrating. One of them wore a leisure suit. They all were constantly throwing things between the backstage roadies and the band members on stage. Jewel was in a great mood. She signed two fans' fold-out Rolling Stone pictures, interrupting the concert and saying, "Why is my belly in Rolling Stone? It isn't right." and then taking the fans' copies and signing them in the middle of her act from the stage. The audience was very young and most of them were casual fans. Hardly anyone knew any of the songs, except for "Who Will Save Your Soul?" There was no advance ticket sales, just pay $6.00 at the door one hour before showtime. There was constant sound problems. Jewel kept asking that her stage monitor be turned up or down. Her guitar wasn't miked at all for one song so all we heard was Jewel's voice and saw her stumming a guitar that made no sound (for Deep Water). The stage monitor problem threw her timing off on the song, "Race Car Driver" and she totally blew some lines. Overall Jewel was happy and was really into her music. - --James Reach using his friend's E-Mail account while on his "You Passed The Bar So You Deserve It" vacation in VA Beach. ------------------------------ From: "J.R. Cruise Control Fragile Flame Angel Standing By Race Car Driver Love Me, Leave Me Alone Near You Always Marital Carnival She may have played more songs that I don't remember. She definitely did not play "Chime Bells" after promising earlier in the show, "I will you yodel for you before I leave, I promise." In fact she left abruptly after only one song in the encore, "Who Will Save Your Soul?" Jewel appeared to be not feeling well. The whites of her eyes were red. She seems to have cut her show short. The venue was very small and extremely hot. As Duncan Sheik said, "This reminds me of my senior prom" because the place (Tremont Music Hall) was a stage with a very small floor for the crowd to watch from. A member of the audience threw Jewel a green plastic ring which she caught on-stage and then wore for the rest of the concert on a finger on her strumming hand. The sound was bad, often distorted when Jewel's voice became louder. A lot of the fans knew Jewel's music well, as a complete contrast to the next night in VA Beach when most of the fans hardly knew her. Many in Charlotte would mouth the lyrics to every song that is on the "Pieces of You" CD. I met two older people who now live in Charlotte, who lived in Homer Alaska and knew Jewel's family. Jewel's aunts have recorded their own album, which these fans have a copy. These fans didn't know that Jewel's father had an illegitimate son named Nikos, although they new where East End Road is. I met a woman who is originally from San Diego who saw Jewel at Java Joe's several times. About 50 fans were turned away because the event was sold out. - --James Reach using his friend's internet account while on his "I Passed the Bar So I Deserve It" vacation in Charlotte, NC and Viriginia Beach, VA. ------------------------------ From: Aaron Matthew Suever Date: Fri, 31 May 1996 10:31:36 -0400 (EDT) Subject: Re: re: the (not so) wonderful adventures of duff and capello On Fri, 31 May 1996, Dean wrote: > Great story. It is a complete (well, almost complete) show from the Puss Puss Cafe in Seattle. The date was May 3rd 1995. It's a solo show. The show is fairly good quality for an audience recording. It's marred slightly by the noise of the espresso machine, but that's good for a few laughs. It has quite a few of the non-album songs we've come to love, including a lot of the Rare Angels songs, and a few Innerchange Days songs. And of course, it has stories! Unfortunately the last three songs of the show were lost in an unfortunate accident with a canoe. We don't have those on tape, but instead I substituted versions of those songs from other concerts. The songs are: Comfortably Numb, Deep Water and Chime Bells. So the versions on this tape are not actually from the show, but at least you'll get the idea. I've also included as filler Jewel's new song Carnivore from her first show with the band. I thought everyone who's missing the tour would like to hear her new sound, and hear a new song before the album comes out! Here's the info on the tape. It consists of one 90-minute tape. If you are unfamiliar with how a tape tree works, let me give you a little info. I'm going to send copies of the tape to the branches. The branches will then be assigned leaves. They will make copies of their tape for all their leaves. That's how it works. Leaves are not responsible for anything other than arranging a trade with their branch. The branches are responsible for making copies for others. If you are interested in being a leaf, do nothing now. Wait until you see my next announcement, a call for leaves. Then sign up. The requirements for being a branch on this tree are that you be willing and able to make ten copies of the tape, quickly and reliably. And that you be willing to make those copies whether or not your leaf has anything to trade. That's all I ask. I'm getting married in two weeks, so I'm going to rush this tree along. I'm looking for ten branches, and I have your tapes already to mail. If you are interested in being a branch, please send the following information to me at walden@nh.ultranet.com using the subject SEATTLE BRANCH. You can copy this form to the clipboard and just fill in the info. 1. Name 2. E-mail address 3. I would welcome any comments about this. Perhaps I am wrong, but after seeing Jewel live and hearing her vulgarity, I became a bit jaded about her as a person and had to turn to her work to believe she was actually as "sensitive" as she claimed. Think about it: you're on stage and what do you do to get a sure rise out of the audience? Throw out a few four-letter words and watch 'em scream with joy. It doesn't say much for the audience; it doesn't say much for the artist. This is my personal view.
