A month or so ago there was a debate on here > about if she did this. Some people said if she started talking > politics they wouldn't like her anymore. I think that if Jewel has a view that she feels needs voicing to her audience, then she should write a damn song about it. I don't go to see her in concert to hear a political lecture, I go to hear a concert. Wether my views agree with hers or not is irrelevant. It's like that Sinead thing with the picture of the Pope...and she is also affecting people's opinions. There are a lot of young voters and soon-to-be voters at her shows, many of whom I would guess have no idea about politics and would adopt her views, not because hers are the most informed necessarily, but simply because they are Jewel's. Voters who have no idea why they are voting for/against the people they are? That scares me. I understand about free speech and all, but there is a time and a place (which in this case would be in a song) for everything. To which I can reply only that a lot of young voters could do a lot worse than to take Jewel's word for anything. Elections in the USA are not won or lost on the basis of the candidates' beliefs or policies, they're won on the basis of who slings mud most efficiently so as to distract voters from debate of any substantive issues with any relevance to their own lives. Do you trust Bob Dole to talk about anything relevant to YOUR life? I'll take Jewel. and so should her young, impressionable audience. It beats ADM, or Exxon, or Domino's... ------------------------------ From: Kamyar Aram Date: Thu, 30 May 1996 19:40:08 -0400 (EDT) Subject: Re: political statements > > I like the fact that she is doing this. Wether my >views agree with hers or not is irrelevant. >informed necessarily, but simply because they are Jewel's. Voters who have >no idea why they are voting for/against the people they are? That scares me. originally i thought that maybe jewel should refrain from political statements, but on second thought, i think that if she does HAVE an opinion and BELIEVES in it, she has every right to make statements about it, in song or just talk... after all that's not much different than when she gives an intro to Who Will Save Your Soul and saying how it's bad that so many people have to compromise their dreams and happiness for shelter and etc. although it is not as obvious, that too is an opinion... jewel is simply saying what's in her heart and mind which is what she's been doing the whole time... if it changes or affects the way people think, well, i think that's what she's trying to do in the first place... songs like "pieces of you" and "little sister" also have a bit of "preaching" quality or at the least give an opinion... i know it is difficult if you disagree with her political views... but consider how a bigot or racist would react to a song like pieces of you... (note: not equating republicans to bigots and racists, in case it's comin off that way)... so basicly, i think when you go to see an artist perform (and it's different for entertainers, though some people bounce in both fields) you go to experience what they give, and whether you agree w/ their point of view or opinions unfortunately has a lot to do w/ how you react to them, but there is no reason an artis should compromise expression for approval... hope i didn't talk too much, you all take care peace yar ------------------------------ From: UseLessArt@aol.com Date: Thu, 30 May 1996 19:42:21 -0400 Subject: Who Wants STL and others Any one want Save The Lino., Philis Barnaby Finally Gets A Bra, Live Boots, Sound Track Stuff? SO THERE! so, we got back on the road... found me ice cream... and finnaly settled in some god-awful know-nothing town in illinois to spend the night. tuesday may 21: got up... embarked out more east.... stopped at DENNY's (but it just wasnt the same without tara...) and found some caves in indiana... so we headed there... we settled on the moncago (?) caves, and had to tour it with a group of 25 or 30 fourth graders... they were loud and obnoxious, but we were more so... i think i taught them quite a few bad expressions as well... so then we headed south, drove around louiseville kentucky, through nashville and to cookeville tennesseee, where my stepmonster's family is from... so duff got a real taste of what the southern life is like... found out "my cousin" is "a-couritn' ".... wednesday may 22: woke up and headed for fall creek falls. IF YOU ARE EVER IN THE AREA: GO THERE! i showed duff around the park and we went to the main waterfall lookout. after being charmed for a few minutes, we decided to take the hike down... with quite a few stops to take pictures and let duff's mouth agape for awhile... and we finally made it to the base of the waterfall. while i was trying to take picts (for those of you who dont know: i'm majoring in photojournalism and take my camera everwhere) without getting my camera wet and not getting water splashes on my lens, duff started climbing toward the falls... once i got my fill of photos, i decided to join her... only i went all the way around, and nearly fell and broke my neck... so, after a while, we headed up the clift again, only we didnt stick to the path... me with my camera and her with her camcaorder and us sharing my tripod, we rock climbed at least halfway up the damn thing... after literally fighting ourselfs to go, we headed east some more and decided to add another state to our original totall, and headed up to virginia... thursday may 23: found a flyer for "the natural bridge: one of the seven natural wonders of the world; bought by thomas jefferson from some king to ensure that the american public could always be free to enjoy it" and only for eight bucks! so, after out wonderful continental breakfast, we headed there for yet, another adventure... we visited, and left... decided to get our butts down to charleston, south carolina so duff could see her friend jenny... well, we stopped in yet another god-awful hick town for dinner... and duff left her wallet (trip bag, actually) there.. but we didnt realize that until we were in myrtle beach, and had to back track 2 hours to get there... then we spent the night in the parking lot of the subway subshop... i think duff can give you a play-by-play of everything that happens in that parking lot over the cource of the night... friday may 24: subway finnally opened the next day (10 mins late i might add) and they didnt have duff's trip bag... so we were stuck with no credit cards, 100 dollars less and no drivers' liscence for duff... and yet, we still headed for jewel.... we flew to charleston to pick jenny up... and flew down to atlanta... we made it there around 7... stopped at james's hotel room... took showers.. and headed for jewel at the cotton club... we finally met james... after duff approached two other guys and missed... and the next adventure was to get duff in the cotton club even though she had no id... so i told the bouncer of the sapp story of how we have traveld 2571 miles to see jewel from kansas city missouri "see, even my liscence says missouri" and of how duff lost her id and all the credit cards and yadda yadda yadda and so he let her in...i must have been really convincing because he also but a green band on my wrist, which allowed me to drink, and i'm not 21... but i drank anyway... so, after JAMES LEFT TO HANG OUT AT THE BAR, i talked to his friends, the guy in the hottie shirt who plays the trumpet (?) for the marching band and is majoring in aerospace enginerring and the guy with the ponytail who explores caves and is majoring in computer sciences... then duncan sheik (gotta change that name though...) took stage... and jenny passed out. so all these people made a ruckust and took care of jenny... we were all back by the time jewel took stage... duff gave her a gift... and some drunken chick named DEB (tattooed on her back) stood on stage and made a commotion through the whole concert.. meanwhile, this couple was making out the whole time, and the girl dept begging the guy to take her home, and after awhile we tried to convince him to take her home as well so she could get laid... but jewel was awsome... the band backup was amazing and she really knew how to work the crowd... if only one bastard behind me wouldnt have kept yelling at her to yodle....then, toward then end, i nearly passed out and had to go the door to get fresh air... and i dont think she ever did yodle... so, we left and went back to james's hotle room, but he never showed up... so i dont know what happened from there.. i was so tired (driving all day, nearly no sleep and no food) i remember crawling into a bed at a hotel... duff thought i was gonna die... saturday may 25: left hotel and headed for the lake... hung out at jenny's house sunday 26: same damn thing only "went to town" for breakfast... thought i was gonna die of boredom... monday may 27: dropped jenny off... left charleston about 10am and drove until 6 am tuesday morning (duff drove 3 hours... she was sick... i drove the rest) to get us home.... and so, that was our trip... sorry if it took so long, but we knew quite a few people who was curious if we would return alive... and we did... and duff's ids and credit cards have been found in north carolina and they are on the way... and duff and i have been sleeping pretty much nonstop, except for piddling around the house every now and then... and i think we both are losing our minds... or, at least, i am.... later, capello ... and it was all worth it... ------------------------------ End of jewel-digest V1 #229 ***************************
