That, and some people might have a backlog of messages to get through. And then you have to consider all the college students going home for the summer who won't have email access. Even so, I was kinda wondering what was up, too. I think I lost almost 10% when it was live but I retried it last week and I only lost 2%. Still, I'd love to find a way to clean it up a bit... There seems to be a lot of noise which you can get rid of by using dolby. ------------------------------ From: doog@amber.ssd.hcsc.com (Doug Scofield) Date: Mon, 27 May 1996 17:10:24 -0400 (EDT) Subject: Review: Jewel, Miami Beach, Sunday May 26 1996. Jewel played Club 245 last night. The opener, Duncan Shiek, was a good opener like others on the list have said. To my ears they sound alot like Toad (which probably got them their contract) but they have an appeal of their own. They took turns on various instruments. Jewel sang a song with them, she came out in jeans and a sleaveless short black velvet looking shirt with a studded belt munching an apple like eve, her bellybutton flashing when she moved. The crowd reacted well. Duncan Shiek played another song, we waited fifteen minutes and there she was. Probably 1000 people were in the club by this time. I gave away three tix outside the show i wasn't able to unload on this list. one recipient said "*giving* away?" they were only $1.03 :-) "I didn't know so many people here liked me!" She opened with Little Sister. The first thing i noticed was that she played each song noticeably faster than the album version. Not that it's bad (the indigo girls did that over the years as they got better) it just took some adjustment, but i do prefer the more patient versions. She then played Nicotine Love, from what i could tell without request. The crowd was a typical Miami club crowd, talking but listening too. Kinda maddening until you get used to it. She stopped a couple times to ask folks in the balcony to her right to please stop talking, it was probably messing her up with them being so close to her. She played two guitars, big blue and a natural one. She seemed a little rushed, it felt hectic to me for a few songs. This setlist is in very rough order, missing a couple song titles (i've heard nothing but the album so far) and probably a couple songs. Little Sister Nicotine Love Near you always You were meant for me <- preceded by Federales drug bust story Carnivore <- preceded by its other title and "fucker" to cheers. Race car driver <- she played electric Foolish games <- no guitar, and she got really into it Catch a cold with me <- somewhere around here a woman behind me yelled "jewel i sent you email!" Morning Song Pieces of you <- preceded by saying the NYT called her racist. a friend said he heard someone in the audience say the same. when she got to the faggot verse and sang "afraid you're just the same" the crowd really liked it, this is south beach after all. she belted out but slurred the faggot and jew verses more than the ugly girl/pretty girl ones, maybe a little self-conscious about it? anyway, the crowd really liked it and the point was not lost. -encore- WWSYS Chime Bells <- she seemed into it. two rounds into it she stops and said, "the people in the balcony finally fucking shut up!" to great cheers :-) she starts up again and stops, says "guys, enough with the lights" because they were flashing all over the place. a couple more and she says "faster?" and waits for us to cheer for it. As we shuffled out of this cool club it was 12:15am, and lots of magazine-quality people were waiting to get in to dance til all hours. doog - -- doug scofield doog@mangonet.com boca raton, florida also doog@mail.hcsc.com every day we starve while we eat white bread and beer instead of a handshake or hug -- jewel ------------------------------ From: "James H. Oh, so that was you! Nice job- i'm sure she got the rest- they were very pretty, and it was a lovely vase. - -so we walked next door to an Italian cafe and relaxed for awhile We picked "A Touch of India", my first Indian food. Yummy. - - Jewel didn't sing Chime Bells...some guy kept yelling for her to yodel, but - - she told him to shut up, and that she was tired of the song or something to - - that effect..maybe her voice was tired...i don't remember... Ok, what happened was someone requested that she yodel, and she said that she was sick of it- then later someone asked again- and she said that her "Sorry i can't yodel- my voice is really trashed" or something close to that. I could tell she was lying- i just wish she could say "no" and that be enough for the crowd. - - The only downside to the concert was the security people..they were being - - extremely anal, but oh well..I'll get over it... And the bartender up top- i didn't tip him for serving me a beer- he was very sarcastic "Thanks alot"- this put me in an unhappy mood until duncan came out. (Ok, before i am flamed for not tipping- i've worked doing the food thing before, and lived off of tips- so i do tip- but i'm not going to tip $1 for one beer!) Well, i did get a ticket the next day for driving down a "bus only" street- "they don't have them round these parts," i say. - - James Judd> did you make it there? I tried calling your hotel, but - - never got through... Thanks for trying- and yah, we made it with plenty of time. Certain other list members had a little more trouble- but i'll let them tell the story when they get back...
