Is Jewel playing the East coast only? Anybody know when she'll be performing in the West again? You know, some place between the Pacific Ocean and the Mississippi river? Chopped Liver (Charlie) watkins@selway.umt.edu ------------------------------ From: "James H. Judd" Date: Sun, 26 May 1996 05:14:41 -0500 Subject: my first concert Hi, Well, back from Atlanta after resurrecting the poor overheated car, and seeing my first jewel show at the cotton club. Very nice, Duncan said that "Atlanta was alright" after people cheered for him, and the highlight of the evening was when jewel said "I can't yodel tonight my voice is trashed" tee hee, i loved it. She was a bit hurried though in her stories, at least compared to the old stuff. Just because she's used to it? Or tired of it? I was feeling less than 100% (this pollen is killing me, come on rain) so maybe that's why but i was a smidge let down by the show. Her voice was incredible- better than POY or on tv... and don't get me wrong i'm glad i went. But i rather prefered the old style if you can call it that of jewel- it seems the rocker girl stuff doesn't fit her as well. They may not be the same recipe for popularity, but i like the slow songs better. Carnivore was incredible, so maybe she just needs some development time with this style after all. I'm afraid it's hard to catch the purity and emotion embedded in a song with her current venues. Now i understand why people said "I'm sorry she's becoming so popular"- it's not selfish really, just it's forcing her to go through pains and reduce the quantity and quality of some of her styles of performance. Pity really. And this was in a crowd of (i'd guess) 300. Quite the rowdy bunch though. One guy kept glancing up at ESPN (yes, blasphemy- the tv was on the whole time) so maybe there's hope ;) Nice to meet you capello and duff, very very sorry i couldn't find you katie- it was nice of you to call and i wanted to thank you in person for being my branch! Hope y'all enjoyed the show. Perhaps if jewel didn't take requests and interacted with the crowd less she could have the chance to truly perform my favorite songs with the subtlety they deserve- resulting in an overwhelmed, more respectful crowd. I mean the poor girl said she was sick of chime bells, and then later they requested it again. Get a life kiddos. Oh, and the Jewel-head acid girl must be following the tour- a girl was woohooing, got up on stage and was pretty much obnoxious the whole time- and security let her hang out there! I was about to go up there myself and see what would happen :) Catch the show if you have the chance- her next tour WILL be in a stadium, James(who didn't get a promo poster... grrrr.) PS: if you have specific questions email me- this was too long already _________________________________________________________________________ Auburn University Eng. The album is called "MOM" and will be released in the USA on July 2nd on Surfdog Records, in conjunction with Interscope. It says that Surfrider is an international coastal environmental organization and that they will recieve "several dollars" for each unit sold. As always, anybody with high quality live tapes of Jewel, send lists for possible trading. We now have over 50 performances on audio & video but are always looking for more. :-) AmyJo ------------------------------ From: The AutoCAD Guy Date: Sun, 26 May 1996 17:19:17 -0400 (EDT) Subject: concert in Atlanta Okay, I've been hearing for months how great seeing Jewel live is...so now it's my turn to gush/babble/etc... ;) The doors were supposed to open at 9:00pm, so my friend and I showed up about 6:00. There was no one there yet, so we walked next door to an Italian cafe and relaxed for awhile... turned out we were sitting next to the guitar player and drummer for Duncan Sheik...also met Jewel's babysitter from about 10 years ago while I was waiting to play our check... the doors opened at 9:00, we walked quickly over to the front of the stage and planted ourselves right in front. Unfortunately, security wouldn't let us bring in the whole vase of flowers we had brought as a belated birthday present, but we had one flower each in our hands... Duncan Shiek was really good I thought, I especially liked the song "Serena", it's on the promo tape they gave out, but the live version was a hell of alot better... I don't remember the exact set that Jewel played, but someone else from the list recorded the whole thing. Unfortunately, in my excitement upon seeing Jewel, I completely forgot your name... :( send me email if you see this and I'll trade you copies of my photos for a copy of your tape! :) Jewel didn't sing Chime Bells...some guy kept yelling for her to yodel, but she told him to shut up, and that she was tired of the song or something to that effect..maybe her voice was tired...i don't remember... After the show, my friend and I ran outside to see if we could catch her as she left...we just missed her, nad it seemed like the security people were hustling her out of there real quick... she drove away in a little black Honda civic, seemed kinda strange since there were two tour buses nearby... The only downside to the concert was the security people..they were being extremely anal, but oh well..I'll get over it... chris - ---who is seriously considering skipping a final exam to drive to Charlotte for Thursday's concert P.S.
