Bootlegs are a necessary way of distributing rare material by an artist that a record company could not possibly make a profit on because of the small number of copies desired by the general public. Something a little along these lines did happen to me. I got a letter from my publisher with the address of a guy in Seattle. She prefaced her note by saying he'd called her office several times (must have done some research, since the her phone isn't listed on the book) trying to reach her and asking for my phone and address. When she did talk to him, she was of course not willing to pass on that information without my permission, but did say she'd pass his address and phone onto me. She said he was insistent and (underlined) very enthusiastic and that she'd felt it necessary to mention that I was married, and suggested that if I did contact him I should stress that again. Understandably, this made me pretty nervous. My phone number is not listed--people need to know me well enough to know my husband's name to find it. I didn't contact him until my recent reading, when I sent him a postcard announcing it. After all that he didn't come to the reading, but sent me a lovely art card apologizing for not being there, and said some really kind things about my poetry and how it had affected him. The letter was not at all pressuring or personal, so I feel fine about it now, but I must admit that my first impression was a bit of anxiety because of how he approached trying to find me. I can only imagine how that feels magnified by thousands, knowing there are people on a large list discussing you and your work, etc. It gave me a lot of sympathy for people in that position. Remember how weird it feels when you discover people have been talking about something behind your back? So I guess I would say that we should approach Jewel with the same kind of sensitivity she exhibits in her work. > (an interesting > aside, Neile, for the longest time on ecto, I thought you were *male*... Hello Angels: Eventhough I said I was not gonna be able to log on for some time , I saw that in the newspaper they had reviewed our bands gig in El Batey were I got beaned in the head by an icecube. When I asked my dad if he knew about this he told me that the newpaper called him three days ago that they were gonna review our gig. It's a local newspaperLa Historia , and here is the review translated: Music Today by : Brenda S. Antis A Saturday afternoon , in a little bar called El Batey performed what I thought was gonna be another ska band trying to imitate the other 300 burned out bands. I was wrong... The show began at 4:30 , and Farce Ostrich appeared on a stage smaller than my college dorm. All of the members are teenagers : Rafa (16) is the vocalist and guitar player that only knows about three cord changes , Jose C.(17) the drummer , Gaby (16) the bass player and Felipe (16) the lead gutarist. The lead singer, with a t-shirt that he had painted a symbol of anarchy on it, started to play along with the crowd , a bunch of college kids. He gave a rendition to Rod Stewart , when he sang " if you like my body and you think I'm sexy" to a group of young ladies sitting in front of the stage. Then the band , began their set. They played 4 original songs , one ( Scrambotic Girl) made fun all of those girls that liked singers like Ricky Martin , and other no-talents groups like Menudo. All the songs they played were in english , and I thought they have found a plateau of distinction among other latin -ska bands. Their music is still rough , undeveloped , immature ,and the lyrics are missing their point when they start rambling about " how coffee made me high and then I went mad". Rafa has talent as a writter and I noticed that when he stopped a song , told the band to get off stage and started reciting a poem on the topic of the adults labeling on teenagers. Great punk rythims were created by Felipe and the drummer ; but eventhough it was punk rock , it had of catchy melodies that remind me of Green Day in their beguinnings. They covered a song from Green Day and another group I'm not that familiar. Their second set was interrupted when Rafa came out alone with his acoustic guitar on stage. He played a song about sensitivity and whose chorus went something like " I'm a sensitive girl ,be careful and don't hurt me" , and apparently the crowd thought that he had crossed the line of stupidity and someone in the crowd thew to Rafa's head an icecube which ended the little show. The band has a new style different from the other latin rock bands , and eventhough I think they are nowhere near stardum , a record deal or launching their tour , they can be entertaining (if not too stupid or silly sometimes ) and can help you pass through a boring hour with a smile upon your face. -END- I personnally hate this review cause it just depicts us as silly bastards. And she put down Jewel , when she refered to I'm sensitive in such a way. Anyway it was my first review , and it didn't personally atack us , so it was ok. until then Angels: Rafael < who looks extra sexy in a kilt> Galinanes ------------------------------ From: wchung@internext.com Date: Wed, 22 May 1996 16:54:11 -0400 (EDT) Subject: save the linoleum Sorry to re print this, but I spend literally all day trying to find a copy, but I still can't If anyonse has a copy or nows where I could get one please write me personally or on the mailing list. thanks wayne Chung wchung@internext.com ------------------------------ From: Piglet Date: Wed, 22 May 1996 16:54:38 +0600 Subject: Tori unplugged this was talked about awhile ago, but does anyone know when the Tori unplugged will air? Eric and I got down there and later met with an acquaintanec of mine, Jessica, and her friend Erin. Eric and I talked and hung out with Duncan and most of the band for a while early on and they are really pleasant people. They said they'll be opening for Everything But the Girl next and Duncan recommended their new album to us, for anyone interested. That's nice to know. After he told us they do WWSYS in rehearsals, Eric asked the bass player to play the opening riff to it in their set...and he did! Now Jewel came out again to sing the last song with Duncan after which she left by the left side of the stage which was right where I was... I called to her and held out a rose and a card and she came over and took it, thanking me for remembering her birthday. And then she vanished. Well, OK, she walked away, but it seemed like she vanished. Her show was VERY unusual. And about 11:30pm, it opened with Behind the Wall, Little Sister, Near You Always, Daddy (during which she seemed alternately mischeviously grinning or in the heat of rage). Nicotine Love by request, then a song she said she'd never played before but the title escapes me. "See Sally..."? I don't know, but something with a female's name starting with the letter S. Anyway, the guitars were very out of tune and had to be retuned and Jewel was VERY talkative. She said she swam in the ocean that day and joked about not being able to get rid of the taste of oil in her mouth :) The setlist I don't remember in order, but other songs played were WWSYS, Morning Song, Cold Song, YWMFM, God's Gift, Carnivore, Marital Carnival, I'm Sensitive (during which she made up lyrics on the spot (sometimes a little awkwardly) and really just goofed around, having fun), Love Me Just Leave Me Alone, Foolish Games, Angel Standing By, Race Car Driver, Pieces of You...and *NO* Chime Bells. Maybe she's been reading our posts lately! I may have left out a few, but she was really tearing into these songs like I've never heard before and quite a different setlist than Irving Plaza. She also strapped on the electric (which looks like a variation of a Telecaster) for a handful of tunes, which she did NOT do in NYC. I think there is something about NYC that puts the pressure on, you're always under a microscope when you play there. In Sea Bright, NJ, there was much less pressure, plus the weather was beautiful, save a little rain... I was standing right next to the speakers in the front so I got to hear a few things that were being said by Jewel and the band off-mike, and even in the throes of techincal difficulties, they had a great sense of humor about it all. I decided NOT to try and tape as the security staff seemed pretty insistent before the doors opened...and as the show started I began to kick myself! This was THE show of the tour, I have a feeling. And the more I hear the new tunes, especially Carnivore, the more I love them! After the show, we got a six pack and hung out on the beach for a couple hours, just the four of us, the surf and my guitar. What a great way to end the evening. Of course, I only got an hour or so of sleep before I had to get up for work today, but it was worth it... :) If anyone taped this show, please email me! I'm up for a trade :) Later!
