I can't believe I finally convinced my girlfriend to go to the 9:30 Club show tonight. Hell, after my constent hounding, "You *gotta* go!! She's *brilliant*!!" I guess she finally caved. (Hi sweetie!) What was the set list?? I have a nice little story to share... My roommate works at a group home for troubled teenaged girls, many of whom have trouble falling asleep at night, suffering from insomnia and what not. My roomie asked if she could borrow some of my CDs to make tapes for the girls that she works with so they would have soothing music to fall asleep to. Of course I insisted on Jewel (well, and Pearl Jam ;) soothing?! Couldn't help it). The very next night my roomie gets home and tells me that one girl absolutely *loves* Jewel now and always takes the Jewel tape with her every night, the only problem being she hasn't gotten past WWSYS because she loves the song way too much. Anyways, I thought that was a cute story and I was happy to see Jewel's music touch and reach yet another. Hope everyone is well. To those of you bailing for the summer, take good care and see you in the fall. I did get a picture (which is getting pretty close, breaking that zone of physical space I know I like around me) but I always feel like such a lecher asking for a hug or kiss (even if it's completely platonic) Gotta talk to the shirnk about that one. Hello Everyone. I just joined the list a few days ago, but so far have only been a silent "lurker". I decided it was time to end that; thus this little note. My girl-friend and I both started listening to Jewel a few months ago, but I really became a FAN after seeing her live here in Los Angeles. Unsurprisingly, I think she's wonderful and find her refreshing, in a sea of jaded and angst-ridden musicians---not that I don't listen to some of them too! Anyway, I noticed that there are some tapes 'out there' that are available (?). So, I was wondering if anyone would be kind enough to fill me in on the details of how I am supposed to order it/them. Anyway, I wanted to give a big HELLO to all of you out there and say that I will put in my two cents in every so often. As it happens, some other things came up tonight so that I will be unable to make the Jewel concert tonight in Boston at the Paradise (doors open at 7:00). So, I've got four tickets that I will not be using. Sorry about the last minute notice, but if anyone is interested in the tickets, please email me. I should be around from about 5:00 on. Or Ill read the directions. If it comes up twice, sorry. I haven't had time to learn how to post properly yet. I've been too busy w/work and family to read the directions. Sounds like Christmas and men w/directions. I hope this reaches you all. I appreciate the response I've gotten on my first letter. Anyway, I am still "digesting" the "pieces of you" cd. I'm also still patting myself on the back for finding Jewel. Better late than never. I've read through all of the lyrics you've all provided and I am amazed that Jewel is able to write with such apparent ease. She is truly gifted. If I could talk to her, I would ask nothing of her. No demands on her privacy,or her time, I would just say thank you for enhancing my life with your gift. See, music is powerful. Any of you remember in Sunday school, or church how in the old testament, music was used to soothe the king. Its been awhile, but the harp had the power to soothe and heal. Was it King David? Forgive my rambling. I FEEL music. I dont just hear it. It becomes a part of my body. It makes me move to it. Maybe Im wacked out. I'm also selective about who I become "obsessive" (my husbands words) about. Ok, so I've only "known" her for a few wks, but I just know I will enjoy her for many years. I can sing her music to my little girl at bedtime and put her to sleep. How many musicians these days write songs that are appropriate for children. She's 21 and she is genius. The only melodies I know are off the cd "pieces of you", and "race car driver". After reading many of her lyrics from you people, I think I want to hear her song about the "bluer than you blues" (?) and the one about her stepbrother. For those of you who have made it this far, IF I am sending this to the right person, I am going to Phila. on Sunday night. I know a few of you will be there. Please say hello. I will be with my husband. He is 38, brown hair, jeans, maybe shorts if it is as hot as is predicted now, t-shirt, and probably will have a "you are nuts Selena, expression on his face". Barry is 5-11, and just the right weight for his height. I am 34, below shoulder length, unruly blond hair, (I work very very hard at that unruly look), and glasses. Biggish glasses. I am 5-7 and work out religiously so I have kept my girlish figure. :) I will wear a long blue flowered skirt w/sandals and a white lacey vest. Just in case it gets chilly, I will carry my long beige shawl. One of my favorite thrift shop finds. And if you are still with me, and you will be at the Phila show, please please say hello. and pinch me and tell me Im not dreaming. And tell my husband that I am normal. I know that people are free to have their opinions... but i just can't see why so many people are convinced jewel is getting too popular too fast or her fans that are just now getting into her don't care or MTV is corrupting her. Sean (no i'm not flaming you but you are the latest example of this sentiment that i'm tired of reading...) >And I am praying that the new album bombs in terms of record sales but is >critcally acclaimed. She's already too popular too soon, we should want her to >have a slow and steady rise to fame, remember what happened in the Tortoise >and the Hare? Anyway, I guess that's all. Later kids. Personally as long as an album is critically acclaimed, HeLL as long as I like it why should i care about anything else? Except maybe that jewel is happy with the album she produced and that it sold enough copies to allow jewel to keep making records. Who's to say what is "too popular" If she didn't want to be popular she could do something about it... stop touring perhaps or stop putting out new songs, or at least stop singing them or recording them. And Don't tell me what we should want for jewel. You can say what you wish for jewel. Of course that doesn't mean that's what's best for her. You don't always know what is best for someone else... We should all know that at least by now. Are you saying that jewel is like the Hare? As far as i know she did play coffee houses for a while... and went touring with the rugburns and did things that almost all artist have to do before getting some kind of major record deal. She started seriously playing music earlier than others so the fact that she is getting airlplay at a young age is a tribute to her talent and to years of hard work. I wouldn't say it took her a LONG time to rise to her current level of popularity but it wasn't overnight either as your post seemed to say. Anyway i missed a chance at possibly seeing her at the 9:30 tonight. Oh well. i couldn't get thru to the actual club about tickets. I only got thru to Protix who had none left. Oh well. I hope those who went had a GREAT time.
