It was Jewel day for me. First, it started off at 6am when I woke to listen to Z100’s Acoustic Café. They said that Jewel wasn’t going to be on until 7:15am, so I went back to sleep, and when it came around, I recorded it, although there wasn’t all that much to record. She was there for 45 minutes and all she did was 3 songs: Near You Always, Pieces of You, and Who Will Save Your Soul, like I haven’t heard those songs before. Oh well. But it was nice waking up to Jewel. Now, cut to 4pm when I meet Shakey, who I had only talked to previously on the phone, in upstate NJ. I left my car at his house in NY state, and he drove into the city. We got Irving Plaza about an hour early, and stopped by a bar to grab something to eat. 45 minutes later, we go back to the theater to find a huge ass line outside. We head to the back of it, then think better of it, and go up and down yelling if anyone was from the list. The only response we got was from Linus (hi Linus!). We talked to him and an older Jewel fan, who was very sweet. Then our conversation of the Innerchange caught the attention of three girls in front of us, one of whom had seen Jewel three times in those days. We went inside and endure an hour of waiting. For those who hadn’t listened to the broadcast on the internet, Duncan Sheik opened up. He was quite good with a good band. His album comes out June 4th, and I’m thinking of getting it. For his last song, Jewel came out and sang back-up to the cheers of every fan in the place. Then he went off and Jewel came on a few minutes later. She played everyone song of PoY, except Painters and Adrian, I believe, and the rest of her set consisted of new tunes, a Porgy and Bess cover that she opened with, and closing with the best yodeling Chime Bells I’ve heard yet. Now, cut to the after-show party!!!! Whoo hoo! Now, this was great. After Irving, Shakey and I walked over to the F-Stop on west 20th, and met some fans along the way who were going there, too. It was very nice, and I felt like a little rebel wearing a backwards hat, a sweatshirt, and ripped jeans and boots into this place filled with record suits. It was nice seeing Jewel presented with a gold album plaque, but after about 5 minutes of photographers taking her picture and niceties, she seemed to be incredibly bored by it. After the presentation, everyone was left to enjoy the party, and Jewel was quickly swamped by all her fans that were there, and her record suit friends who were congratulating her. I tried to talk to her again (I had previously at the Metro in Long Branch, NJ, in January) but there were simply too many people. Shakey, the lucky bastard, got his cd booklet signed, gave her a Gordon Lightfoot cd, AND a hug and a kiss on the cheek from Jewel. "My life is now complete" he said. J Completely giving up hope of getting my Jewel poster signed (that Shakey was gracious enough to get off the wall at Irving before the show started), I went over to a lady who looked like an older version of Jewel, and found out it was her mom. Finally! I got to meet Lenedra! Shakey and I told her we were from the list, and we talked to her about it and Hiryana, and how we’ve been getting news before Hiryana can. NEWSFLASH!!! On Monday, MTV’s House of Style is gonna show a short little segment on Jewel at 4pm. Watch for it. Well, Lenedra had to talk to other people, so we went and talked to the girls we had met on the way up to the F-Stop. After a few minutes, they had to go, and I knew that we should leave soon, cause I had to work at 9am the next morning…or at the time, in a few hours. So, I saw Lenedra again, told her that I had to go, but I really wanted Jewel to sign my poster, who was now in a cordoned off area of the place only for the music people. She graciously took my poster, told Jewel, and quickly returned my poster back in a few seconds. She was so nice. I bid her farewell, Shakey finished his beer, and we left. And I was ecstatic. Yeah, I didn’t get to talk t o Jewel this time around, but I was next to her whole hell of a lot. In fact, right after the presentation and right before she was swarmed by her fans, VH1 did a quick little interview with her and I was right behind her to her left. So, if the camera wasn’t zoomed in too close, then I just might be in the shot. Heh heh. So that was my fun Jewel day. And Shakey and I are going to see her again on Tuesday at Tradewinds in Sea Bright, NJ!!! Yeah! If anyone else is going, tell me and we’ll all meet down there. Later. ‘bye! eric :) afterthought - i just read everyone's own reviews of the irving show, and all i have to say is: WHERE WAS EVERYONE? so, i walk up and down the line and only Linus answers? i did meet silverkat inside, but that was about it. and miguel, how could shakey and i have missed you inside the f-stop? aarrgghh!! okay, on tuesday, we're all gonna meet and be happy. and this time i'm bringing a camera! take care. :) ------------------------------ From: j.mullins1@genie.com Date: Sat, 18 May 96 03:45:00 UTC 0000 Subject: Re: Irving Plaza show Hi! > Doh! I wasn't about to go > out and get it, then pay ten bucks to get back in, just for a lame-o > present. Well, I gave her a CD. "Waiting for You" by Gordon Lightfoot. I told her that I'd see her show Tuesday in NJ so if she gets to listen by then, maybe I'll get to hear what she thought...of course like a dolt I didn't bring a camera and I was 10 feet away when she got he Gold Record! But I did get to kiss her and she sqeezed my hand...so that ought to keep me going for about 5 or 6 years... :) Sorry I didn't meet you at the show or party... Later! Shakey (j.mullins1@genie.geis.com) "People ask why I'm chasing a comet's tail I tell them because standing still is like being in jail" It occurred to me after I got home that I could have just given it to someone by the bus after the show, but I was a giddy idiot (and I kinda wanted to give it to her myself at least). I think you need to change your repertoire. On vacation and unsubscribing for a couple weeks. See you all later...
