Some people on the list mentioned it just before I got my tapes with it on them, so I was curious to hear. At first, I didn't think it was all THAT special (only speaking on a relative Jewel scale here, of course), but after just a few listens, it shot right up to the top of my charts, along with His Pleasure Is My Pain, which comes right before. "He says/I'm too sensitive/But he takes pleasure in my pain" The loose cross-reference to I'm Sensitive (which came first, HPIMP?) is neato too - a little like the Jessica/Emily thing (okay, a very little). Don't forget that Jewel's concert will be broadcast live tonight at It looks like Duncan Sheik might be opening for her, but hopefully they won't be broadcasting that over the net. Plus, I've been playing around with RealAudio today and the Digital Arena at Atlantic Records (finals? What finals?) and it looks like they'll be keeping everything up for a while, so you will be able to get the concert later on if you can't be there tonight. It'll probably sound better sometime later than it will tonight, since there will be fewer people accessing it from the archives. I was really surprised to hear this one again too, especially since I don't remember seeing it on any other setlists. It has a couple of cute lines (I personally like the one about scales of good and bad) but in general it's not a very strong song; I thought it would have died a graceful death a long time ago. I don't know who wrote it either, but it's covered a LOT, I don't think it would be stretching to call it a standard. Sinead O'Connor does a really kickass version of this song (and also the great folk tune "Streets of London") as a b-side on a couple of her singles. I forget which singles these two songs are on, but I highly recommend one of these singles to anyone who likes folk songs. I'm quite jealous, actually, I would LOVE to have heard Jewel sing this song. If I knew that she was doing it, I would have requested it loudly and often. (Well, no, I wouldn't, but I would have requested it at the radio studio where I could have easily spoken to her). Everything about the song was so refreshingly orginal. The guitar strumming that rocks back and forth like the sound of a train. The creative lyrics which add an aura of mystery. And I just love the descending chord progression at the end of the chorus. It sounds so cool!
