I must say that the cover is very striking. Very beautiful close shot of her face. From the same shoot as the niceparty URL site, I think. The music however, unless it is different than the packaging, is only WWSYS (LP version) and NYA (LP version) I didn't buy it, since I'd rather save the money for mailordering (or reimbursing folks who find promos for me...minor subtle hint...since all I have is PoY and several tapes) Are there any more places for finding the results of that photo shoot? Great pictures. Also, the Spin shot is very nice. She looks so innocent and yet so not. (Just check out the picture if you don't know what I mean) As Kurt suggested, I'd like to know the story of thsat large Jade ring she wears. It's beautiful, and we've seen it very often. Figured that there must be a story behind it. It's prominently displayed in the Spin shot. So I'm all set and I find out that I've wone two tickets to the premier of Alec Baldwin's new film, 'Heaven's Prisoner'. Same night same time. In case you'e wondering *why* this movie is premiering in Missoula, Montana, the author of the book on which it is based live here. So, the delima is that there has only been one other premier in Missoula, 'A River Runs Though It', and I didn't get to see that. Plus my daughter is a major movie freak and she wouldn't forgive me if we gave up this opportunity. And I really want to participate in this cybercast. What to do? Well, I'll just have to trust that someone will get a decent recording of the show and tree it. Because there is no way to resist those puppy-dog eyes my daughter give me. It's in this months issue. Sorry if it's been posted already. Enjoy and (all you jewel freaks out there) remember that just cuz she doesn't recycle that you shouldn't either. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Singer Jewel cuts some gems out of a yodel and a guitar on Pieces of You. The New Bohemian It's a Sunday afternoon in San Diego, and Jewel Kilcher, clad in a Western-style fringed suede jacket, has persuaded several stone-faced Mormons to let us into the garden of their temple, normally off-limits to all except those in good standing with the church. "My dad was a Mormon," she tells them, conveniently omitting the part about his excommunication. Despite this childhood fall from grace, Kilcher's haunting debut album, Pieces of You, reflects an intense yet secular spirituality. Cut from a tradition that includes Joni Mitchell and Tracy Chapman, Kilcher is a young, nomadic sensitive with a social conscience and a guitar. Amid such tender odes as "You Were Meant for Me," she drops maudlin delicacies like "Adrian," the ballad of a brain-dead adolescent, and the title track's tirade against bigotry__"Do you hate him / 'Cause he's pieces of you?" On "Who Will Save Your Soul," Kilcher may have nicked Edie Brickell's chord progression, but her critique of ersatz salvation proves religion is more than the smile on a dog to her. Kilcher's only 21, but she's spent most of her years gigging and touring. After moving from Utah to Alaska, her parents soon began incorporating Kilcher into their nightclub act, a mix of yodeling, skits, and Alaskan-history films. At seven, Kilcher began her own yodeling career in earnest. Later, in Hawaii for a year of high school, Kilcher got heckled every day by members of the school's native majority until she unveiled her Alpine gift. "After a while, I couldn't eat lunch because I had to yodel so much. I started going, 'Hit me! I'm starving!' " After Hawaii, Kilcher moved back to Anchorage, then to Seward, Alaska. She abandoned classical vocal training and learned to play guitar so that she could street-sing her way across the country, eventually landing with her mother in San Diego. After years of scrawling poetry in her journal, everything converged, and she wrote her first song. Just three years later, she's denying rumors that Sean Penn, director of the "You Were Meant for Me" video, has captured her wild heart. Kilcher's performance style has taken a big old swerve toward country these days. She sounds less like her LP's mature folksinger and more like the snaggletoothed rural lass who enchants Mormons. "If you'd seen an earlier show, you'd say I was rock," Kilcher beams, bucking her image like a bronco. "People think I'm some kind of hippie. I don't even recycle." Yes, my first experience was WWSYS and I LOVED it on the radio. I take my music seriously and then when I saw her on VH1 doing a song about a car I new I had to buy her music. This was about 2 wks. ago. Buying an entire cd is a risk if you don't have a clue what the sound will be like. I honestly figured the cd would have one good song, maybe 2 and the rest would be "alternative" weird sounding stuff. After listening through once, I was shocked! I loved it. She writes poetry. She tells stories. She is a storyteller. She brought tears to my eyes. And the versatility in her voice! To "discover" talent like this!! I've listened to the cd probably one hundred times now. Now for the good part. I looked her up on the web and was pleasantly surprised to see she is touring. Printed out the tour schedule and she is going to be in Phila, Pa. a wk. from yesterday!! That's an hour from me. I've got tickets to a show that holds only 700 people!! Now arent you "old-timers" just a bit jealous of me to be seeing her through my brand spanking new baby eyes?
