As soon as the door opened, I raced in and grabbed the promo posters. There were two kinds. The Jewel on tour with Duncan Sheik and the POY cover. Duncan Sheik played for around 40 minutes. They were good. One too many slow songs though imho. Anyways, they still got good ovation from the crowd. After an agonizing wait, Jewel came on. She seemed really surprised by the size and reaction of the crowd. Metro holds near 1,000 (i am guessing here.) and was sold out and the crowd was psyched. She started with Over_the_rainbow (without a guitar) and then played few from POY (Little Sister, YWMFM, Foolish_games?). She also did a swedish song, blues number, and a new one that I can't remember the title. Geez, I must have Alzheimer's...anyways I can describe much better with God's_gift_to_women. For this and few others, Jewel played electric guitar and it rocked! Does anyone know what kind it is? It doesn't look like a regular strat or tele...its all light wood color. Next was Pieces_ of_you. Once again with a band. After the concert, I overheard these two girls playfully chanting "pieces" to their pal who obviously requested it loudly and often...don't know why but it brought smile to face :) I'm_sensitive eulogy to a fat boy who killed himself (don't know the title) Amen (my favorite! thank you Jewel.) encores: WWSYS with a "comment on Bob Dole" and nice ad-lib verse about playing in chicago. crowd went berserk and Jewel came out for the second encore. This crowd was really into the concert from the beginning. Every high long held notes that Jewel sung were treated to a roar of approval from the audience. Anyways, Jewel came out and seemed really happy. When she said "I love my life," it summed up the night nicely. next a yodeling competition between a guy and girl from the audience...the girl won. Chime Bells Ring Nikos Did anyone tape the show? I did bring a tape recorder but I pressed "play" instead of "record" and missed everything before god's gift. Words cannot exlpain how disappointed I was when I pressed play and nothing came on. I must be brain dead. If anyone captured the whole show, please let me know. If you are interested in my recording, email me privately. (it contains the last 40-45 minutes of the show, in stereo, good quality.) if you haven't guessed yet, this was my first show. All I can say is "wow!" I just drove back 150 miles and I am typing this 3:30am (with Nikos in the background!) and I am still excited from the concert. I have some thoughts for people who have never taped shows before... Or have and feel like reading this A. You can use a cheap recorder (if you don't want to pay a lot of money for a really nice recorder) You may be thinking: "Why, it'll turn out better with an expensive one" True, but here are some reasons (for me at least) 1) If you get frisked, you'll get it taken away... All that good money wasted... =( 2) A cheap recorder can be as good (well...sometimes) as a more expensive... I have taped quite a number of shows in the past two years with a $20 recorder... They've all came out pretty good (for the solo acts that is) Ex: Jewel, Sarah M... For the bands I've taped : Belly, LTC, Eve's Plum, Throwing Muses... they didn't come out that good... So you may want to use a better recorder (or not stand right under the band's noses) for heavier shows... So in summary, for people who are just starting to tape shows or are thinking about taping... Spend that $20 on a recorder (I use one that holds regular audio tapes - the mini ones suck, the sound is horrible... And see what happens - you never know what will turn out B. I guess that's it =) End: Tape as many shows as you can and trade them excessively... I have been reading for a couple of weeks now but I haven't really had the time to start writing. I just got done reading almost every word of 230 posts so I am pretty sick of looking at a computer screen. Anyway, I thought I should introduce myself before I start writing stuff here. I am usually scared to post to lists because I always seem to get myself in trouble. More times then not I write stuff that I never send. I am going to try not to do that here. If I write something here that is really stupid, "please be careful with me because I'm sensitive ...." I have seen that a lot of you kind of look down on the newer Jewel fans. I more then wish I would have heard about her a year ago. The first time I heard her was on MTV. I must be honest and say that the first thing I noticed was her physical appearance and I thought to myself, "here comes another semi-talented beauty who will become a marketers pet." However, I couldn't stop listening. By the end of the song I changed my mind and thought maybe this one has some potential. I accidentally caught her on the Duets thing and that is when I decided to buy the CD. It was perfect to have a total cheese singer like Sophie B to follow her. It made Jewel like look like she possessed the voice of God (God could be a woman). It became my definition for the difference between good and bad music. With all of the other types of music that I listen to I am always wondering in the back of my mind, how good is this band or singer. Although I can't stand Maria and Whitney, I was always saying to myself, do the people that I listen to have that much natural talent. With Jewel there is no question. She can do everyrthing that they can do and more. I have heard it. Even more so, she is a wonderfuly interresting and talented songwriter. Her music to me is the perfect music. It is what I have been looking for all my life. I ordered the CD from Columbia House to save myself some money (I am very poor right now). I am now a fan and will most likely be for life. I know this is kind of late but I just started posting here. I am sure most of you were fans before you saw her in concert so maybe my story is a little unique. The stake in my heart was the day I saw her play at Penn State. I still didn't have the CD but I was expecting it in a couple of days. She was not what I expected. I was expecting to see a shy quiet moral little thing. She was charismatic to say the least. She gave the audience the bird several times and told stories about pot. I stared intently at her the whole time but can't remember what she wore. However, I heard every word she said. I was with a couple of friends who really didn't like her, but that is nothing new to me. They jabbered the whole time but I just ignored them. It seemed like I was the only one clapping anywhere around me. My best memory of the show was when she sang Angel Standing By. It nearly knocked me over, literally. I remember standing there and listening when I saw this girl walking out of the crowd. She kind of looked at me funny and that is when I noticed that my eyes were tearing up a little. It is a rare event that something hits me hard enough to make me cry. I don't think I have had tears in my eyes since I got hit in the balls by a grounder at baseball practice a couple of years ago. I didn't even cry at my grandmother's funeral. You would think that a person would have to pay a fair amount of money and drive a great distance to see the best show of their lives, but I walked five minutes from my apartment and saw it for free. She signed autograghs afterwards. I had nothing to sign and my friends wanted to leave. I just wanted to go up and shake her hand and say, " I really like what you do." Now I fear I won't have that chance again. I think I am more afraid that I might say something really stupd in the heat of the moment like, "Will You Marry Me." I don't think that I will be able to see her in the near future. I can't find anyone to go to Phili with me. I can't do it alone because I will probably fall asleep at the wheel. If there is anyone at Penn State or within 20 miles please contact me. If I can't go I would appreciate it if you would pick up a poster or a tee shirt or something for me. I will pay you for it. If there is anyone here from Pittsburg, maybe you could do the same. I will be in Pitsburgh on the 30th to see Tori. I am sure I could meet you somewhere. After a long ride down (about 2 and a half hours), Andy (a fellow Jewel lister) and I finally had our chance. We got in right when the doors opened and found some pretty nice seats in the balcony. I was a little disappointed that we didnt decide to go down to the front near the stage and when we tried later on, there were so many people that we couldnt get down there. Anyway, she really blew me away firstly, because she came out in a pair of long black boots and a beatiful, beautiful dress. She looked so very beautiful in the dress and holding Big Blue. She sang a few songs off the CD and several others that I have heard before. She also sang Carnivore and Marital Carnival and a few other new ones. I was very very impressed. I thought that the band did a great job too. As mentioned by another concert goer, Jewel seemed amazed at the turn out and the way that the crowd reacted to her every move and note. She mentioned several times how happy this made her and how great it was to do what she loved to do and make people happy at the same time. I know I was happy. She worked the crowd very well as I expected but the best part was saved for last. After the concert was over and I had heard Chime Bells and the song in Swedish (which is a very difficult language, if I may say), Andy and I waited outside the theatre for about 30 minutes after which time Jewel was picked up by a Lexus just in front of the tour bus. We couldnt figure out who the people were picking her up but we assume it was relatives or good friends (could be wrong). Anyway, Andy walked over and I followed right behind him and we managed to talk with her and get autographs and everything!!! I was so thrilled that I had a chance to meet her. I told her that she had performed a wonderful show and she said that she was really glad that I liked it. She was so polite and kind and sincere, I loved it!!! I guess I should end here, if you arent interested in this kind of thing this was a bore. So you may want to use a better recorder (or not stand right > under the band's noses) for heavier shows... Now that Jewel has a band, the $20 recorders might not be able to handle the volume. It seems to me, there are four categories of portable recorders. The cheap ones that cost $20-30 are ok for solo acoustic music but the sound becomes distorted when recording a loud band. Also don't get the microcassete recorders. Then there are cassette tape recorders that cost around $100-120. I have one of these and from my experience, they are well worth the investment. They are about the size of the $20 recorders but records in stereo and has built in mic. The can also handle loud sound without much distortion. Then there are $200-400 tape recorders. These are really bulky and need a separate microphone. Finally, there are the high end recorders like DAT and Minidisc. You'll get fantastic sound out of them but they'll cost you $600-800. Plus, you also need a plug in micropohone. > > So in summary, for people who are just starting to tape shows or are > thinking about taping... I think Jewel is exploring and experimenting what she can do with a band and as result, I think there will be lot of new songs, arrangements, and one time things. I went into Newbury Comics today (that's a CD store) and say the biggest amount of POY I have ever seen in my life. THere were maybe 8 in the regular, alphabetical section and ten more in sale sections. And they had a couple more in the "Hot" section (kinda like a buzz bin, if you will) along with DMB, the Cranberries, and some other big timers. This all kinda freaks me out because, throughout this school year, I have seen the store (and other store) have one copy of Poy, no copies (and no name-seperaters that indicated that they were selling the cd), have a handful of copies at sale price, have a couple copies at regular price, and now have a ton of copies at sale price. The music business, with emphasis on business, is screwy and I don't like it. The store also has Sarah McLachlan's two-and-a-half year old Fumbling cd on sale. Hey Tom Proven. Are the Trashcan Sinatras still together? If they are, when's a new album coming out. I have a great song recorded live in 1994 that is unreleased that I'd like to hear on an album. By them, not me of course. I have yet to hear the song from The Craft soundtrack (that's also in the Hot bin at Newbury. Hmm, maybe Jewel will take it over) in it's entirety. But I have heard Sunshine Superman covered by her on the Andy Warhol sdtk. and I love it. My favorite line is the one that Aaron Walker can't transcribe. The "I can make like a turtle and dive for pearls in the sea" bit. That's what my friend, who is a Donovan fan, and I have come to a consensus on for the lyrics. I just love the way Jewel says "Turtle." Makes me wanna go give something a squishy hug. A damn fine song. As a tie-in for this post (my writing is being influenced by all the paper I have to write for finals. you know, Be cohesive and bring everything together), I find it odd that Jewel's cd is on sale and one of the top twenty cd's at newbury and in the top ten on radio stations. Because she gets very little airplay around here, whenever I listen to any station that might play her (the 2 big Modern Rock stations, the AAA station, the UMass station, and the station that sponsored her concert with Edwin McCain) she's never on. The only way I ever hear her played is when I request her (thrice times so far) or when I play her on WAMH, Amherst College's radio station. I think that of all the shows I did this semester and last, I didn't play a Jewel song only once (same with Sarah McLachlan). I play them every week (which is pushing my luck on this indie-underground mentality station), and never hear them on any other station. What's goin' on here? Some people I talk to say that Jewel is a pretty big hit; even at the beginning of the school year, people were saying "yeah they played her a lot during the summer back home, and I hardly heard her at home in MD on any station and hardly ever here. But she's almost gold. Maybe I'm just in the wrong place at the wrong time. This is a pretty good example of how incoherently I write for my classes. And it explains why I'm always surprised when I get decent grades. Hey you WHFS listeners. Is Jewel in or has she been in heavy rotation there? I wonder what warranted them having her on Just Passing Through and at the HFSticle and the HFStival and whatnot. And I don't mean that she don't deserve it. Well, I'm ready and rarin' to go see Jewel this Saturday. Still don't know what anyone else going there is doing. I've got my gas/toll/parking money in my wallet, a little gift for her, and two cool pictures I took in January of her for her to sign. And I bought a metallic pen for her to sign with cause black marker on black background don't come out too good. I'm becoming mildly obssessed again.
