I *always* respond to my e-mail, may take me a couple of days cause my new job is HELL (!!!) but I do respond. Kept seeing mysterious references to this Jewel person on the rust list this week, saw that Ben Keith produced her album, then discovered this pm she was playing First Avenue in Mpls tonight, had to go. The woman can sing! Imagine Cyndy Lauper meeting Emmylou Harris in Gyneth Paltrow's body, only with the lungs of an opera singer, and you start to get the idea. Doesn't even stop to take breaths. Also has guts: sang her first song a cappella. Also has lyrics: zero inhibitions, but charming as hell. Packed house, much fan adulation (great audience rapport), three encores. She seemed to have as much fun as anyone in the crowd. Good show. Sorry about that. I misread your post, and thought that your friend had just forwarded the message to you, not the actual article. The whole thing reminded me a lot of something that happened on the Tori Amos mailing list recently. Someone posted an article that was supposedly from the New York Times or something talking about how Courtney Love had a press conference to tell people how upset she was about the song Professional Widow. It included a bit about her reading some of Kurt's suicide note that said he killed himself because of her cover of Smells Like Teen Spirit. Anyway, the whole message was forged and caused a lot of confusion, etc. Sorry to jump to conclusions. I wasn't trying to doubt your integrity, just wondering about the veracity of forwarded messages. I most certainly doubt the intelligence of the author though. Saw Jewel last night at First Ave. Great show, although I was a little annoyed with the crowd. They were very enthusiastic (Jewel seemed overwhelmed several times during the show) but they didn't realize that sometimes you should be quiet. Jewel performed Carnivore, Marital Carnival, and a brand new one called Cruise Control that she said she wrote yesterday. I really liked her with the band on some of the songs, but I think that Morning Song works a lot better as an acoustic song than it does as a number with the band. It loses a lot of its intimateness with the band. However, I thought that MOPGGTW and Racecar Driver were really good with the band. That's about all I've got time for. Today is a big outdoor-music-festival thing at school. But, it was a great show. - -Aaron Walker Email address: awalker@macalstr.edu Home Page: http://www.nebula.net/~lazlo/ ------------------------------ From: Hiranya@aol.com Date: Sat, 11 May 1996 15:20:15 -0400 Subject: misc 'French Roast Cafe' is a radio event presented by Z100 in NY. (Im about 85% sure on this). The electric guitar she's using is another Farrington, made by the maker of her blue one. Jewel did a shoot for Esquire magazine, did I say this already? Its for their 50 Fabulous Women issue. She is doing and interview for Details Mag soon. Her Rolling Stone interview will be out soon. Shes doing Regis and Kathy Lee again. She tapes on the 17th, but the air date is not the same day. For those in Canada, shes doing the Canadian equivilant of Regis and KL in Toronto on Monday--the Dini Petty Show. Theyve requested an interview and a 3min version of WWSYS. There will be a meet and greet with CFNY contest winners at soundcheck after which she will do an on-air on CFNY "Live in Toronto", with Kim Hughes at 6:30ish. Jewel is confirmed with Sting and Joan Osborne at the Turtle Bay Hilton on Oahu in Hawaii, Sept 15. Confirmed at the Del Mar Fair June 29, San Diego. Confirmed for three shows at the Alaska State Fair in Palmer on Aug. 23, 24. All these shows will be solo. Jewel is not officially "gold" yet. She has shipped gold. This means that Atlantic has shipped out more than 500,000 CDs to stores. Since stores order what they can sell, it is now pretty much set that hers will go gold. The main sales indicator, Soundscan, is projected to be 'gold' by her party in NY. Gold is half a million, Platnum is a million. Jewel's breakeven point after touring and recording cost is at about 400,000. So she will start getting her few cents on each CD from here on. Though it takes at lkeast 6 months for Atlantic to calculate and pay! I just found all this out today in a conversation with Lenedra. Since it interested me I thought it might interest you. JEWEL John Anson Ford Theatre Hollywood Saturday, May 4 Jewel shines on, possessed of charm, wit and a far-ranging voice that enchants and captivates. Born in the small town of Homer, Alaska, and now living in San Diego, Jewel formerly resided in a car until her label deal hit. The 21-year-old singer-songwriter released her debut, "Pieces of You," more than a year ago and only now is it truly taking off. Credit Atlantic Records for real artist development; while the album did a very slow burn, Jewel toured extensively, usually in small clubs. One detour last fall included the role of Dorothy in the Turner Broadcasting version of "Wizard of Oz," in which she held her own alongside the likes of Roger Daltry, Jackson Browne and many others. The sold-out performance before a vocal, enthusiastic audience was a long time coming for this personable star-on-the-rise. Though supported by a three-man band for a portion of the set, Jewel didn't necessarily need them, with the playing dynamic of acoustic guitar, an engaging mix of waifish girl and cosmopolitan woman, and her voice husky in the midrange, yet also reaching up high and clear. Jewel's folky material traveled from the poignant to the comical, including the winsome "Morning Song," the spiritual and lovely "Angel Standing By," idealistic "I'm Sensitive," and her current alternative radio hit, "Who Will Save Your Soul," pulsing with a little reggae-ish beat. There were bluesy twists, jazz intonations and showtune-styled vocal acrobatics all blended within her performance, including high-speed yodeling for a final encore, while the new songs offered were further evidence this Jewel is definitely a gem of a talent.--Darryl Morden (Daily Variety, 5/7/96) ------------------------------ From: Plan8Clair@aol.com Date: Sat, 11 May 1996 17:33:23 -0400 Subject: cover songs A few suggestions for cover songs: 1.
