(eulogy for the fat boy from Homer) This song is "Fragile Flame" As for "Jessica" (one of my favorite songs) and "Spivy Leeks" don't expect thsee to be played. When I gave Jewel some bootlegs a couple of months ago she said she had forgotten these songs. In fact, at a concert at San Diego State Montezuma Hall several months ago she said on-stage that she didn't know "Jessica" anymore in response to a request. However, she was excited about getting a recording of "Spivy Leeks" as she likes the song. Thus, maybe she may re-learn the song again. As for "Jessica" this list ran a survey of whether we should lobby Jewel to re-learn the song and the results were mostly, "let the artist do what she wants; we shouldn't lobby." However, "Jessica" is still a perenniel favorite among us fans. James ------------------------------ From: Sabra Richardson Date: Sun, 5 May 1996 14:46:16 -0600 (MDT) Subject: more and more! Anyone have those lyrics anywhere? "Marital Carnival" was performed with band and the band was absolutley necessary for this song, not just icing on the cake like on some other songs. The piece is very interesting musically and the carnival like atmosphere generated was fabulous. "carnivore" was a bit of a screamer, but i really like the lyrics. glad to see there were a bunch of listers there last night...too bad we didn't work out a post show meet though.... later, mark *********************************************************************** * Things To Do In An Elevator #9 * * Offer name tags to everyone getting on the elevator. * * Wear yours upside down. * *********************************************************************** * Mark Salamon Orange, California * * smarks@wdc.net * *********************************************************************** * SCORESHEET BASEBALL FEVER. (So people who've been taping her shows, do let us know if you have songs that aren't on any of the other tapes from the list). Songs like "Absence of Fear" will likely be on the next one; however, we won't be including songs from anything that's officially commercially available. That's why we're willing to put material from the promos on, but nothing from soundtracks. The good thing is that soundtracks tend to show up used and frequently - -very- cheaply. - --Neile On Sun, 5 May 1996, Sabra Richardson wrote: > > > Could someone confirm whether new songs such as "Absence of Fear" and > Jewel's soundtrack songs will ever appear in a future Mass Dub from this > list? She dances in the shallow end Of the lake where their picnic is He watches her as she stumbles carelessly He knows that he's in love with her But scared of how she makes him feel He wants sometimes to runaway with her She is all on her own on those rocks He wants her to come to him So he can hug her and be freed again All she does is smile and wave again She winks because she's sure that things are right And he's overcome with love and crazyness They are love They dance in the sky They are love Streaming a rainbow They are love In every sense of the word He's been gone For years now He left her She cried when he did He said "Baby, Your too good for me" And he left to roam the world They were love In every sense of the word they were love A boy and a girl They were sweet and innocent But he knew the truth of love. ------------------------------ From: ace@jetter.com (A.C. Just kidding. Jewel Kilcher's music is not the music to listen to when you are depressed. Jewel is angelic and all, but her music is not suitable when you are down in the dumps. In this vein, I'm going to end up offering advice that could easily send you further down the spiral depending on what is depressing you (I was just bored and a little sad, so this worked for me), so take what I say with a whole shaker full of salt. Listen to or watch anything happy or emotionally neutral. I recommend They Might Be Giants or "Weird Al" Yankovic, Marx Brothers movies, Three Stooges shorts, or anything of a similar ilk if you're trying to lift yourself out of doldrums. If you just need a break from Jewel, which I did, dig into the rest of your musical collection (my thanks to Paul Kim for that suggestion). I took in some Leonard Cohen (DON'T listen to him if you are depressed, only if you're bored), U2, Pulp, and Smashing Pumpkins. And I don't know much Spanish, but the gist of your signature quote was muy mal. HERE is la unica solucion: Guzzle a gallon of Mountain Dew, leave Comedy Central on 24 hours a day (if you don't have cable, get it. Infomercials always bring me back up when I need a little ego boost), and buy a San Jose Sharks cap. Why this last one? Whenever you feel low, just put on the cap, look in the mirror, and remember that there is always someone doing worse than you who continues to persevere. If my lameass hockey team can take it, so can you. Or just remember this: I missed my second opportunity to meet Jewel Kilcher, and I feel just fine. If this lameass can take that, you can take anything. - - Carter, Whose College Basketball Team Is Called "The Banana Slugs" ------------------------------ From: Carter Navarro Date: Sun, 05 May 1996 19:16:43 -0700 Subject: Hooray! I know nobody asked for it, but it's on the same piece of paper as the request form for more Jewel/Duncan Sheik information, which I'll be plopping into the mailbox. So here's my bit of publicity/record keeping: JEWEL In February 1995, Atlantic released Jewel's debut album, "Pieces of You." Over a year later, with the current success of her single "Who Will Save Your Soul" at both radio and MTV, Jewel is now headlining her first tour. During the past year, Jewel has toured with such artists as Bob Dylan, Peter Murphy, Edwin McCain, and Deep Blue Something. She has appeared on "The Late Show with David Letterman," "The Tonight Show with Jay Leno" and "Late Night with Conan O'Brien." She has feature articles in Rolling Stone, US, SPIN, Interview and People Magazine with more to come. But Jewel couldn't have done it without the support of her fans. For that, she thanks you. DUNCAN SHEIK While attending Brown University, Duncan played lead guitar with Lisa Loeb before striking off on his own. At once intimate and intelligent, romantic and progressive, "DUNCAN SHEIK," his Atlantic debut album, marks an unusual meeting of creative ambition and pop sensibility. With the help of producer Rupert Hine, the album lends itself to an atmosphere encompassing several levels of creativity. "I just write what moves me. I think the lyrics are pretty literal. Most of the inspiration and the stories are right there, and hopefully they're open enough for people to have their own interpretations." This may be your first taste of Duncan, but hopefully it won't be your last. ***** There's some 1-900 number stuff at the end, but I hate such toll calls with a passion so I'm not gonna give you any of that. My apologies to Jewel, Duncan, and Atlantic, but the 1-900/976 phenomenon sprouted while I was still watching weekday afternoon cartoons, and I don't appreciate the psychological scars that resulted from the Easter Bunny asking me to call him for only $1 a minute. - - Carter, Part-Time Purveyor of Propaganda and Publicity ------------------------------ From: WHITEH17@VAXA.CIS.UWOSH.EDU Date: Sun, 05 May 1996 23:07:57 -0500 (CDT) Subject: RADIO ANGELS Date sent: 5-MAY-1996 23:06:37 HELP! It took not one, not tow, but three guitars for Jewel to Rock LA like it hasn't seen since the Northridge Earthquake! The best way to describe her style tonight was Jewel Kilcher meets Melissa Ethridge! Here's her playlist (might be incomplete, since she played several new songs that I haven't heard before). - -a Tracy Chapmin cover - -the song she sang on 120 minutes, I can't remember the title because I have the memory of a gna*...uh, I forgot! - -Little Sister - -Morning Song - -Angel Standing By - -Carnivore - -Matrimony(?) Carnival - -Pieces of You - -Foolish Games - -You Were Meant For Me - -I'm Sensitive - -Fat Boy(?) (the one about Edward) The Tracy Chapman cover she sang without any accompanying music, she never mentioned the name of the song but it's chorus was something like: "Why bother to call the police because they will only come too late" The crowd (what do you call a pack of Angels, a school?) really got amped for Little sister, and she played it a little more edgy than normal, which seemed to be the theme of the show. Angel Standing By: first time I heard this one live, and she nailed it! GO JEWEL! Carnivore: I think I have a new favorite! This is a new one, very rocky (she played this one with her band, which impressed me a lot!) Matrimony Carnival: If this song doesn't make her next album there will be hell to pay! Funny, witty, hard-edged, a great song and an equally impressive performance! She played several new and unrelease songs so it looks like her follow-up album is sure to go gold...in the first weekend! I just hope we don't have to wait till 1997... If I hadn't seen Jewel on stage with my own two eyes, I would have sworn that it was Melissa E performing Pieces of You. Not one of my favorite songs, but still a solid performance. (what, no cranberries mention??) Foolish Games: hmmm, never knew you could mosh to a balad... You Were Meant For Me moved the crowd the most, as two young ladies even got up to the front corner and started dancing (sorry, I wanted to join you but I was sitting in the section on the other side of the theatre!) Now you know Jewel wasn't gonna leave without playing her hit or Yodeling don't you? For her first encore she followed her band on stage for quite possibly the best rendition of WWSYS I have ever heard (sorry Letterman!) She then said goodnight and left the stage again (what a tease!) only to return a second time to bring the already standing crowd to it's knees with "Chime Bells" perfect closer! Jewel seemed to be in an incredibly chipper mood (what exhaustion!) when she ran out on stage and greeted the crowd. And the way she pounded on Big Blue, I didn't think her trusty guitar would make it through the night! She didn't look or sound a bit nervous, although she did have her trademark "I gotta pee" stance, but I think that's just from her relative unpolished stage skills that she will continue to develop as she matures. The only bummer for me was the sedated crowd. Several times I wanted to get up, storm the stage and MOVE instead of sitting down on my laxy butt letting Jewel do all the work. My wish did come true though during her encores as everyone crowded against the stage. Oh, and yes Brett...she was looking spectacular! Ok, I've said enough (except sorry for my friend who shouted "Yodel! Yodel!" when Jewel came out for her encores, he's just a recent "obsessed Angel". I apologize NOT for the length of htis letter, she ruled LA and I want the world to know! Prayers go out to our fellow Angel in the traffic collision!
