When Jewel's following was small and she was doing coffeehouses people who followed her were primarily in it for the music. The number of people who are in it for the music does grow with popularity, but there also develops a group of morons. There are some people who are exposed to jewel on MTV and KROQ and think she is hot and go to her shows. This small percentage often ruins it for those who are into the music. There are few things more annoying to me than persistent catcalls and whistles *during* songs. I do not mind screaming with recognition during the first few seconds or in appreciation of a song well played at its conclusion, but when an artist is performing that should be a time for the audience to view/listen without trying to be the center of attention. The boots we currently have are remarkable for the wonderful quality of the recordings....you can hear the singing and playing. If i had tried to boot tonight's show I would have had to deal with shrieks, whistles, and stupid vendors shouting, "Beer!" I feel that Jewel's talent will allow her to outlast the current hot vibe that she is experiencing and she will probably have a long and wonderful career. I just hope that she doesn't cave into popularity like Melissa Etheridge has recently or completely flip out like Tori. Jewel is a fabulous talent and deserves wealth and fame, but i wish that she could have it on her terms. If she enjoys playing to thousands of screaming fans, than i hope she can. For my sake though, I hope that the quality of her writing stays as high as it has been since I know that the future concert experiences will not be as good for me as Rare Angels and Innerchange Days. That may seem selfish to some of you, but it is not. I want jewel to achieve all that she wants, but that doesn't mean that I have to like what results from her achieving mass popularity. It all comes down to the music for me...i will continue to support her and deal with morons as long as the music is keeping me interested. later, mark *********************************************************************** * Things To Do In An Elevator #12 * * Lean over to another passenger and whisper: "Noogie patrol coming!" * *********************************************************************** * Mark Salamon Orange, California * * smarks@wdc.net * *********************************************************************** * SCORESHEET BASEBALL FEVER. I don't remember the order of the songs. She may have sang more songs which I don't remember. Some of the highlights: Best performance for sure: "You Were Meant for Me"--very well done emotional rendition. Worst performance for sure: "Carnivore," a new song which is a driving hard-rocker. Frankly, the lyrics, music and performance of this song sucked. It's refrain was a very loud, long, screaching, unmelodic belting out of the word CARNIVORE, describing a loser man. "Marital Carnival" is a great song, excellent melody (even though the keyboard player's instrument was being fixed for most of the song by a roadie. You could tell that the keyboardist was supposed to play circus style music but missed his part). It was about a woman's perspective about a marriage in comedic fashion. The new song about Translucent Water was not the same as Under the Water from "The Craft." It was a good song about having insight and understanding. Behind the Wall --- the usual a capella thing 2. Absence of Fear --- much better than MTV, IMO. But it usually is live, huh? 3. Little Sister --- solo still 4. SIBTWay --- This one gets better and better. I uderstand her playing much better after this one. And her voice is so great!! Here come the boys... 5. PoY --- She gets so loose when she's got the bass backing her. So much more soulful. Here comes the keys...very sparse...for mood. Drummer tried roll thunder (or rain) cymbals, but I could barely hear it. 6. I'm Sensitive --- Bringing the band out really loosened up her delivery, even though they didn't do much on this one. groovy groovy rilly groovy Bongos, very cool spots for accent. Plus the drummers got a great hairstyle. You'll see. Break it down. 7. Morning Song --- A very countrified version with the bass and drums and the lite open keys. Like it. (yes Kurt I saw her) 8. Carnivore --- A helluva new(?) song!! with the band. Very scary. Sample lyric (I'll try to transcribe fully in a few):"Never trust my pink fleshy heart to a carnivore." Could this be because Sean got married after she had fallen? Just a shot out of left field. 9. Tiny Love Spaces --- solo. (I couldn't hear Carter's question, oh well) 10. Near You Always --- solo. You can really hear a difference in her new and old guitars. Not sure which is better. 11. All the Animals --- solo. I'd never heard this live before. Beautiful voice (like you didn't know that) The boys are back... 12. Foolish Games --- Keyboard intro. No guitar. Spectacular. The way she dances/moves/emotes with her hands. Really frees her up. Rhythm section grooves it up so much. Makes it so sad and soulful. The keys are so spooky. Absolutely amazing!!! Intro of Band--"The Best Band" D,D,and D. 3D!!! 13. Adrian --- Not one of my favorites, but much better with the band, and her guitar work was good. And I liked the slippery bass on the verse breaks. I liked the playing but the song is just ok, imo. Let the rockin begin... 14. GGTW --- She didn't mention that she'd seen the guy in Colorado (as she had said at Slim's), in fact said she hopes he'll hear it someday. Is she telling stories as fibs again? And which are which. And then as she's telling the story and where the guy said "Show me your tits...would you show me your tits?" Some lout screams out "show 'em." I hoped he listened to the lyrics on this one. Guitar sounded thin, but could've been the mix. Band sounded pretty solid on this one, following the changes well. 15. Race Car Driver --- Rockin' version. Rhythm section does nice things for it. Drives it even more. Jewel needs a screamin solo at the end though, IMO. Encore: 16. YWMFM --- Solo, even though she had promised the band they'd do it together. Oh well. They did sit there in the dark for the song. I kept expecting them to jump in. They are very well disciplined. pot...federalis...steve...Isn't it Ironic..she says. 17. WWSYS --- With the band. Getting tired of it, can you believe it. Still a good song, but getting too much for me. Got the biggest response. Only a year or so later. Whatever. Did like the funky percussion accents though. And then my memory fails.....hmmm guess why? I know she did the blues, with the band. And chime bells. I think that's it, but i could be wrong. The meeting after the show killed all those brain cells. That meeting-times were much important short term memories, that I strengthened to kill the others on their way into longterm heaven. I liked the band stuff. She didn't seem to ask for requests here (except for once). Maybe being new with the band... It's really hard to see her and not be disappointed because she didn't play your favorites. She needs to play for four or five hours to appease everyone. Which would be ok for me. But she would be really tired. I only have to wait a little over a month to see her again. You should be very jealous. I know this is long, but that's what I needed. Cement the thing in my mind. If you disagree with anything, fine. You can tell me. You're wrong, but I'll listen. n.p. Show Hi Angels, I was extremely fortunate to see Jewel perform last night too. Boy, you people who posted about the show already didn't waste any time. ;-) I don't want to give away too much if you're going to see her too. She threw in some nice surprises. I will say that she seemed quite overwhelmed when she came out on stage. It was a pretty descent sized venue and it was sold out. After she got over her intial embarrassement/amazement at the turn out, she belted out a number of new tunes. She was definetely ON last night. The band played with her on less than half of the songs. They only had 3 days of rehersal before going on the road. You could never tell. They were a nice complement to Jewel's music. Don't expect the usual 2 hour performance though. If I had one complaint, that's what it would be. The show was only an hour and 15 minutes. This venue had seating throughout the entire place, but before it was over Jewel had everyone on their feet. A few people rushed the stage, then she waved for more to come over. I was waiting for people to start crowd surfing to "God's Gift...," but she didn't play that one. ;-) Oh, one more complaint to an otherwise perfect show. There was an ad in the paper that said the first 200 people in the door would get a free cassette of previously unreleased music by Jewel. I was well within the first 30 and saw no sign of a tape. But hey, I'm not dwelling on the negative. They handed out ring pops after the show. Oooooo.......love those ring pops. ;-D Peace, C. ------------------------------ From: Steve Ito Date: Sun, 5 May 1996 13:03:25 -0400 Subject: Jewel headlines Tom typed... >Worst part...title:"Jewel a gem with her folksy style" I mean, duh, does >this guy think he's clever or what? It will cost her a little bit of popularity here and there, but ultimately the flakes, trendies and lowlifes will drift away in search of another easy artist to drool over. Caught the show at the John Anson Ford Theatre last night and was once again blown away by the awe-inspiring talent of our favorite green-eyed, blue guitar-toting, Tootsie Pop-loving, five foot five and three quarter inch Alaskan. But--and I feel almost guilty saying this--I was slightly disappointed, especially when I compare this performance to the one I saw at the Roxy two months ago. Granted, last night's show was a 1200-seat sell-out and the Roxy holds considerably fewer than that. But beyond the fact that it was naturally less intimate, last night's show also seemed much shorter and she also seemed to be a little less energetic. I'm using the word "seemed" here because this could just be my own personal deranged take on things--I'm curious to hear if others who attended the show agree. But again, for the most part I was in an extended state of merriment and joy for the duration (short as it seemed) of the concert and wouldn't have missed it for the world. Some tidbits and highlights: - --About 10 minutes or so before Jewel went on, one of her stagehands lit two sticks of incense. I think it might have been either sandlewood, jasmine or vanilla. Whatever the case, it smelled great and helped set the tone. (BTW, the amphitheatre is out of doors, so the scent wasn't overwhelming--rather it just sort of wafted nicely through the breeze). - --There were also about four bouquets of flowers on the stage--looked like they might have been from fans. - --Jewel wore a black button-down blouse, black pants and black platforms with what I guessed to be about four inch heels. At one point she rolled up her right sleeve for guitar-playing purposes and then looked at her left sleeve and said, "I feel so uneven!" So she rolled up that one, too. Of course, two or three sleazoids in the crowd felt compelled to yell, "Take it all off!" Arrgh. - --Out of the set list (which others have already posted), I didn't think there was a loser in the bunch, though "WWSYS?" was perhaps a tad on the anemic side. I loved the new songs, especially "Marital Carnival" and (sorry, but I've got to disagree with you here, James), "Carnivore." (BTW, I know the lyrics are probably meant symbolically rather than literally, but does anyone know if Jewel is a vegetarian? Just curious.) - -- Other standouts: "I've Got the Blues More Than You Do Blues," "Foolish Games," "You Were Meant For Me," "Absence of Fear" and "Angel Standing By." (Carter, I wanted to cry when I'd heard that she played two of my favorites, "God's Own Private Gift to Women" and "Race Car Driver" at Bimbo's.) --She sang" Pieces of You" straight through without the humorous tangents on Dolores, Keanu, her dad, etc.. - --At one point she caught herself making a certain facial expression and commented that it was the type of face a horse would make. Then she said, "Not that I emulate horses or anything." (hee hee) - --There was some, but not a whole lot of audience interaction, verbally at least. For instance, she didn't ask for requests. However, early in the show someone shouted out "I love you" and Jewel did say, "I love you, too." - --She also didn't swear much, which in a weird way, I sorta missed. I know that sounds strange, but I found that raw language coming from an otherwise very gentle soul to be kind of charming. Then again maybe if she had sung "God's Gift..." The consensus so far seems to be positive when it comes to Duncan Shiek, and I have to agree. Besides being quite adorable and the owner of some very pleasing sideburns, he has a wonderful voice (kinda reminded me a little of Jackson Brown with maybe a little Howard Jones thrown in) and the songs were pretty, too. Hey, did anybody hear the KROQ interview with Richard Blade yesterday? I only caught the last 10 minutes or so before she started playing "Pieces of You." It sounded like it had been a good interview. If anyone out there took mental notes, I (and others I'm sure) would love to hear what they talked about. Thanks! Claire :-) ------------------------------ End of jewel-digest V1 #179 ***************************
