I hope you'll all bear with me as I relate this bit of news. It concerns one of our own, list member and tape tree branch Kerry Hennigin. As you may remember, I posted here not long ago out of concern, as I had not heard from Kerry in quite a while after our initial negotiations to get my tapes made. Ken shared my concern, and we tried to reach her via Email and other means. Well, yesterday I got my packet in the mail with the Innerchange tapes, and a card from Kerry. It turns out she was in a serious auto accident, had to undergo a long hospital stay and physical therapy. In addition, she has had to withdraw from college and move out of her house. I am still a bit shaky after reading the note, as in my correspondence with Kerry I came to like her quite a lot and hoped she'd be with us for a while. Now, that appears uncertain. I can't believe she sounded so apologetic in the note; but I guess that just confirms my initial impression of her integrity and strength -- fulfilling her obligations in the face of a life-shattering series of events. There was no return address on the card or package, so I have no idea how to begin to get in touch with her, but I think it would be appropriate if the list, or at least those who corresponded with her, could send a card, or flowers, or something to let her know that we're thinking about her. Any suggestions? I'll try and make my comments brief. (after-note: they're not, though. Short summary: See/record this show! It's the best one I've been to so far). Two friends came with me who didn't know who Jewel was. We got there a few minutes before the show started (parking in SF is a bear) but were able to get a good place to sit near the middle of the floor while we waited for Duncan Sheik to open. They were "eh". They weren't bad -- pretty competent really -- but none of their songs really caught me. So anyway, about the show. Jewel came on and launched right into a Tracy Chapman cover with a minimum of fuss. I'm not very familiar with Tracy Chapman, so I don't know the name of the song. She did in fact have a band backing her up for roughly half the set -- maybe a little less. I was initially a bit ambivalent about hearing that she might be performing with a band, but I think they worked out quite well. There were 3 people in the band: keyboard, percussion, and bass. on what sounded like an acoustic keyboard. At least, the notes didn't sound electronic; they were very rich and full. The percussionist bopped on bongos as well as the standard cymbals and other drums. The bassist was, well, a bassist. Jewel said they all looked cool, and he did. I don't really want to spoil the show, and my memory would need some jogging to recall all the high points, but I was impressed with the arrangements. Some of the songs bore only slight melodic resemblances to their solo versions (I feel funny calling them "originals"), but they all worked very well -- especially when Jewel was freed from her guitar and could devote her full expression to the microphone. Of the three times I've seen jewel in SF (Phair and Slim's being the previous two), this was my favorite show. As always, there were a couple new songs, as well as songs I hadn't heard before. Unfortunately, she didn't do "Flower" or "Cold Song," but you have to make your tradeoff somewhere I suppose. She yodeled, but seemed annoyed at the audience for being so single-minded in their quest to hear "Chime Bells", and she cut it quite short -- going straight to the umpteen-notes-per-second chase. That was a shame, because personally I prefer the song itself to the showy finish. However, (need I even say it) my two friends were hooked. Instant converts, woohoo! Note to those who were there: During the first encore, when the band came out but was told that they weren't needed for that song, did you notice them goofing around and making faces at each other? Also, I note that Jewel is becoming popular enough that assholes are starting to come to her shows. There were two groups of such, exuding oafishness from every pore; both trying to push their way up to the front, one with the intention of launching their birthday friend up onto the stage. Fortunately, they were loud in talking about it and the crowd became solid to them. UNfortunately, they managed to squeeze by me and were stopped right in front of me. *sigh* ------------------------------ From: Tom Proven Date: Sat, 4 May 1996 18:42:06 -0700 (PDT) Subject: Media Blitz Listening to the radio, strains of WWSYS, it's an ad for the virgin megastore in SF. I hadn't firmly decided yet, so one of them asked me this: "What was your absolute favorite concert?" I replied, "That would be Nine Inch Nails, October 1994." "What did you wear to that?" "I don't remember." This is, of course, my default answer. "Well, what was your next favorite concert?" "Jewel, last February." "Then wear what you wore to that." "I didn't like what I wore to that." "You're hopeless." This is, of course, my friends' default answer. The point of all this was that my advisor is the most devoted Belly fan you can find, and ever since he met the band and got acquainted on a first name basis with Gail, their bass player, he has worn what he wore to that concert for every show, Belly or otherwise, since. After last night, I now know what I will be wearing to every concert from now on. No, I didn't meet Miss Kilcher, nor did I meet Tom or Candra or any other of the list members. But I WAS surrounded by an aura of very cool people, crushed right against the stage. Duncan Shiek, who was an excellent choice of touring partner, chatted with us between songs. He told us in confidence that this was his very first show and that he was scared to death. We all told him he was doing just fine, which he truly was. I didn't get my grammar collected in time to tell him that if this was his very first show, he was doing such a good job that *I* was scared. I liked him significantly better than Edwin McCain, and am actually considering picking up his album when it comes out on June 4. I got a promotional single with two of his songs on it plus Jewel's non-electric (yeah, she rocked Friday) rendition of "Race Car Driver." I digress, but you already knew that. Duncan performed about 6 or 8 songs and a twenty-minute break allowed me to buy a shirt (the maroon mom-painted cowgirl deal) complete with free complimentary poster and cassette single. All that for only $15! I didn't even have to buy two drinks! I was Death Valley thirsty, but a Coke would have cost as much as the shirt. Plus I had to tip the mean man in the bathroom (he actually told a guy who didn't tip him that he *stunk* when he came in!). I don't WANT a human to hand me paper towels after I wash my hands! I want a dispenser, dammit! Not only is it denigrating to the man, but economically inefficient, too. When I got back, the crowd had constricted quite a bit and I had to do my bulldozer impersonation to get back to the front. A little rude, I know, but I *did* have two saved spots up there. Unfortunately, I now had a shirt and a poster in my hands so I was unable to clap for most of Jewel's show. Instead I just screamed my head off. JEWEL CONTENT BEGINS HERE Radley from KOME (the San Jose modern rock radio station, which enjoys handing out condoms at any concert it sponsors) introduced Jewel, and she came out wearing a complete dark brown leather ensemble: pants and jacket unbuttoned to the solar plexus (I think that's where it is). She had three guitars: Big Blue (which is a lot smaller in person), a regular acoustic, and an electric that looked to me like it had been made in a woodshop class but which my friend told me was a "very nice" guitar. I trust his judgment. She had four picks lining her mic stand, but she still had to ask "Does anyone have a pick?" She opened with an a capella rendition of what I can only call "The Domestic Disturbance Song" since I've never heard it before. After this she picked up Big Blue (I'm gonna keep calling it that, it's just so cute) and went into "Absence of Fear." Now, I'm not sure if what I did at this point was right, but if I hadn't the night would have been significantly different: I mirror-imaged her. I've heard "Absence of Fear" about six times, but transcribing the lyrics for the list sort of forced me into memorization, so I silently sang along with her, and she noticed. This song has been publicly available for only a week, so I thought "Oh Jesus I'm scaring the shit out of her and she's thinking 'I have this obsessed guy standing six feet away from me and he could throw a large sponge at me at any moment help!'" But I couldn't stop myself. My mind was just dominated by the pseudo-duet we were doing, and as she watched me all I could do was smile and think "Well, the cops will be waiting for me outside but at least I'll have a story to tell when I get back to Santa Cruz." There weren't any cops, but I had the story to tell. Jewel and I engaged in more than eight prolonged staring contests that night. I won about 80% of them, but I couldn't help breaking into a grin whenever she kept going for more than five seconds. "The Wink," as it shall forever be known until Alzheimer's Disease takes its fated place in my life and destroys the memory, topped off the night. She winked at me. Jewel winked at me. I'm surprised I'm still alive. But oh god the music was good. Some lunatic got one of Jewel's picks, one of her water bottle caps, AND the set-list, so I have to do this from memory. Here's what I can remember, with none of the songs in order: "Who Will Save Your Soul" "Pieces of You" "Little Sister" "Foolish Games" (I think) "Near You Always" "Morning Song" "Adrian" (This song sounded a lot better with the band) "I'm Sensitive" (With bongos!) "You Were Meant For Me" "Sometimes It Be That Way" "My Own Private God's Gift to Women" (She said motherf-----! She said motherf-----!) "Race Car Driver" (Electrified and RAD!) "Nikos" "Absence of Fear" "'The Domestic Disturbance Song'" A piece of blues. She says she sucks at the blues but I say she's lying. Funniest blues song I've ever heard, though, with lyrics like "I had to walk to school, uphill, both ways, with no legs." "'The Yodel Song'" ("Chime Bells" right? My stupid little trademark during Jewel shows is to headbang during the yodeling. It can be done, I tell you! Especially when you have headbangable hair! OK, headbanging during the Yodeling Climax is impossible without machinery, but I tried.) "'The Song on Her Answering Machine'" (When she said this song was her message I growled "What's your number?" loud enough for the "aura" to laugh). There may have been a few more, but only hypnosis would get them out of me. Maybe the set-list thief is a group member. If that was you, Tom, I'm sorry I called you a lunatic. She told some new stories. She still digs the "Memory as Hair" riff, as well as the marijuana story (hee-hee, she said "Steve" and I knew who she was talking about ohI'msospecial!), but I won't spoil the rest. Y'all will hear them soon enough. The band was great. She's got the bass, the drums, and the keyboard (organ, really). I'm surprised how well organ music compliments Jewel's music. Could it be this instrument will finally break out of the suffocating range of the Christian hymnal? Will we hear a church organ on Halo Eleven? Whooo! Other tidbits, then I'll wrap this up: Her hair still attacks her face a lot, but I think it's cute. She loves flipping the bird. She's got great reflexes. The strap on her electric broke between songs and she caught it mid-fall, saving the hearing of dozens of people. Both I and the guy behind me simultaneously yelled "Nice catch!" It makes perfect sense that the only person who would get to shake Jewel's hand during the show would be a woman drunk out of her wits. This WAY inebriated woman plowed through the crowd using the universal excuse for such behavior ("Excuse me, I'm short!") yelling "I just wanna shake your hand! You ROCKED with Melissa Etheridge, man!" Jeez, Jewel is good at shaking hands. She's got that whole pitcher's wind-up thing that could break your wrist if you're not prepared for it. The drunk woman didn't feel too grateful though; she jabbered at full volume for a couple minutes during the singing. I, however, am a master at the Evil Eye, and managed to shut her up. She and her friend retreated after a while, probably to go throw up. I hope they tip the woman handing out paper towels. Does this make me sound cynical? I've gone BEYOND cynicism, folks. I'm what's called a "fatalist." You don't need to look that up; you know that "fatal" is an unpleasant word. Just add "-ist" to it and you'll know what you're getting yourself into. That's about it for me. I have hardly done justice to the enjoyment I had at this concert, but I'm sure Tom, Candra, and the rest of the attendees will have their own fabulous stories to tell. - - Carter, Who Will Forever Wear the Black Turtleneck, the Levi's 550s, and the Colorado Utility Boots ------------------------------ End of jewel-digest V1 #177 ***************************
