The show is scheduled for the Friday before the Free Tibet show. (That's a helluva weekend.) Also on this Friday bill are Garbage, Afghan Whigs, Lush, and some more that don't strike me upside the head right now. The show is only $12.50 and tix go on sale this Sunday at 10 a.m. I'm going for sure, hopefully to the Free Tibet fete, too. But that's alot more expensive, but probably worth it. I don't know for sure, but a similar show seems to wend it's way around (at least in California, which is my living in the summer experience). KROQ in LA does weenie roast. 91x does something similar. Hopefully your local "modern-rock" station has something similar. You can download it off the web. I don't believe you'd find it in a store, but I might be wrong about that. It is definitely an add on and not basic to machines. If you don't have a Mac you will also probably need to have some kind of sound card for your machine as well. The quality of Real Audio isn't that good at least on the downloadable songs I've heard. I'd be really surprised if you could get a decent tape from it, but I haven't listened to any live concerts over it so I could be wrong about that as well. All I know is that the Tori songs that were available over Real Audio were listenable, but just barely. - --Neile ------------------------------ From: Chopped Liver Date: Fri, 3 May 1996 10:01:08 -0600 (MDT) Subject: Letting Jewel go On Thu, 2 May 1996 joe.fell@spec.org wrote: > the problem with Jewel gettingso big is that now all these people who only > found out about Jewel in the last month or so will hog all the tickets, and > people like us who care about her and found out about her a long time ago > won't get tickets...oh well.... Someone else wrote earlier urging us not to watch her videos, or request her songs on the radio or tell friends about her, so we could keep her to ourselves. I find these attitudes a little silly. Those of us who witnessed Jewel's budding talent should be happy that we were there. Like god-parents, we watch as she blooms full and, yes a twinge of longing for the simpler days catches us off guard. But, she is not ours. Our attentiveness to her growth doesn't grant us any ownership. Yes, we may say "We were there in the beginning. Our support helped her to get where she is to day." And it may be true. We were lucky! She will grow in a direction of her own. It is a pleasure to be a part of this, an honor to be her stepping stone. I think the what's happening with Jewel's career now is exciting and I can't wait to see what happens next. My company has direct web access, but I can't use RealAudio due to the security firewalls that are in place. All I know is that the Tori songs that were >available over Real Audio were listenable, but just barely. Were you using a 28.8 modem and actually connecting at 28.8 Kbps? The algorithms for manhandling the data do very poorly at less than 28.8; in fact they shouldn't really work at 14.4, but do (at a huge loss of quality). Unless you have a modem with a continuous display like a Supra, your modem could connect at 28.8, subsequently retrain to 21.6 and you'd never know that it did. I see mine adjusting its speed from time to time while I'm online, just due to changing line conditions and noise. The world of V.34 modems is full of little uncertainties like that... :) - -- | Greg Dunn | "Information is not knowledge; | | GregDunn@aol.com | knowledge is not wisdom; | | gregdunn@indy.net | wisdom is not truth." | | Greg@gdunn.nawc-ad-indy.navy.mil | -- Frank Zappa | ------------------------------ From: Ian Gabriel Riley Date: Fri, 3 May 1996 13:46:27 -0500 (CDT) Subject: Re: Internet concert You don't need to go buy Real Audio 2.0. Up until a couple of weeks ago I was still using a 2400 modem at home, so I was connecting over my ethernet connection at work, which is a reliable connection and the speed doesn't seem to vary. My Power Mac there has a decent speaker (.au files can sound quite good on it). OK, Neile, you win. :) I didn't want to assume that everyone had a Power Mac and a live connection like I do, but apparently others are fortunate as well. :) :) >I've heard other people on the net complain about Real Audio quality, so I >don't think it's just me. Point made. It is a lossy transmission method, so we may be stuck. I'll try with my new machine (just got it installed yesterday) and see if it makes any difference on my end. If a PM9500/132 won't do it, nothing will, right? BTW, I can't seem to find the "digital arena" off the Atlantic web page. Jeff Hanson mentioned it in a post a week or so ago, so i thought that i'd let him and you all know that there is someone out there doing the little stuff. i give Jewel tapes or CDs to everyone. not everyone i meet, but often strangers: people who seem to be souls who will appreciate the music, cherish it, and pass it on. other angels. or maybe it's merely someone who looks like they could use a great little gift. i always keep a tape with me, and give it away when the feeling is right. people are often suprised (which is a great joy to watch) and want to know why. 'because Jewel is a brilliant artist that deserves to be heard', i say. sound corny? it is. but it is also delightful and real, and always makes someone's day. by passing the music on in such a way, it gives the music an added quality of love (not that it doesn't have all these qualities and can't stand on its own.) imagine that someone walked up to you, smiled, and said " here is a tape. i love it and i think you will too. so, i give it to you. listen to it, keep it or pass it on to someone you love." you would listen to it, and no matter what your musical opinions are you would like it, because of the way you got it. i have given away over 20 Jewel tapes or CDs and recently restocked my supply. this can grow to be very expensive, but each of us can give away one or two. and so, pass the love on. thanks for your time. :) :) ------------------------------ From: Crunch Date: Fri, 03 May 1996 21:36:20 -0400 Subject: Request for assistance Jeff Watson, please reply private.
