Re: Best Buy Ad ---------------------------------------------------------------------- From: sinjin@socal.com Date: Sat, 27 Apr 1996 22:40:18 -0500 Subject: Signs you are obsessed with Jewel In light of recent posts from people claiming they suffer from a Jewel-overload (or, as it is know in the medical community: kelcherphrenia) I have compiled a partial list of Signs You Are Obsessed With Jewel. Please, for the benefit of everyone who is on this list, if you have any other signs to offer, please post them! 1. At a concert, Jewel stops to ask you for the lyrics to one of her songs. 2. You can name over 200 Jewel songs off the top of your head. 3. You psychicly know when WWSYS is being broadcast even when the radio is off. 4. You have heard the marijauna bust story so many times that you begin to believe that you were actually there. 5. You currently have a Jewel CD/tape in every stereo in your house (car included). 6. You bought a second PoY CD because the first one is already worn out. 7. Your friends tell you to "Shut up about that damn singer" an average of 5 times a day. 8. You decide to move out of your plush house to live in a volkswagen van near the beach. 9. You can quote the "Thank You" list in the PoY CD word for word (I can bet some sicko out there can really do it, too!) 10. You made a pilgrimage to Homer Alaska to pay homage. 11. You check the Jewel web sites every hour for any updates. 12. You wrote a term paper titled: "How Yodeling can Promote World Peace". 13. You've been committed to a psychiatric ward ever since you saw Jewel wearing the infamous skirt on Letterman. 14. You actually read every post in this newsletter, and then re-read them whenever you get bored. 15. You honestly believe that nothing on this list constitutes an obsession. If you have any of these symptoms, I don't know what you can do about it (ask a doctor, not a fellow patient!). So if anyone out there knows how to cure this obsession, please let us know. And remember, if you don't get help from here, please...get help! Latez, and I'm out! Sinjin - -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- ECN Culver City Ca. In today's Best Buy circular, they advertise Pieces of You for $10.99 I was just very surprised to see the album advertised and i don't think I have ever seen it advertised in any form before So if stores like Best Buy start promoting the album, jewel may be well on her way into the heart of the Billboard charts Has any one actually seen the album advertised before? I have scoured numerous ads and i don't recall seeing any advertising. For a long time I have thought that Atlantic hasn't done enough to promote Jewel. An example would be no advertising or no CD Singles. But maybe the people at Atlantic are waking up. :) cheers, dave diciccda@saber.udayton.edu ------------------------------ From: gregdunn@indy.net (Greg Dunn) Date: Sun, 28 Apr 1996 11:48:23 -0500 Subject: Re: Best Buy Ad >In today's Best Buy circular, they advertise Pieces of You for $10.99 >Has any one actually seen the album advertised before? Well, this doesn't have much to do with dubbing, but Jewel does seem to definitely be gaining in popularity on the Net. I have a Jewel page (at ) and a Liz Phair page (at ). When I first set up a counter in December, my Liz Phair page was getting about twice as many hits as my Jewel page. Recently, the trend has reversed so that my Jewel page is now getting significantly more hits. In fact, the counter on the Jewel page is approaching the counter on the Liz page. Did I miss those issues w/ > Jewel, or is she in the issues after the ones I looked at? I ran into the same problem/thing. The "People mag" post said it was in the "50 Most Beautiful People" issue, and that issue came out WEEKS ago, and also I think the "Hootie" Entertainment Weekly issue was last week's. (maybe not though) Folks, if you plan on posting info about Jewel in magazines, please, please, pretty please, try to get them on the mailing list in a more timely manner. (Also, posting the DATE on the issue would help) "The latest issue" really doesn't mean much, on any given week there can be 3 different issues (at 3 different stands of course) of a particular magazine on newstands, and the way some magazines post date an issue up to 14 days, it can get really confusing. Sitting in a corner (without supper), Mike ------------------------------ From: Matthew=Owens%Students%SJC@dante.saintjoe.edu Date: Sun, 28 Apr 96 19:24:17 CDT Subject: what else? Hello all, I am just responding to somebody's message and giving some newly acquired information which I am not sure has been posted here yet (it probably has and I am just blind). First of all, Dave said that Atlantic hadn't released any CD singles of Jewel, but in the radio station I work at, we have had the CD single of YWMFM for a while. The title song is a slightly different (and in my opinion, better) version of the album's cut of the song. It also has "Cold Song," which is a short fun song giving a new spin on the common cold concerning couples; "Rocker Girl," a fun cheesy piece about almost obsessive love; and "Emily" (from "The Crossing Guard"), a very pretty slow song more like a lot of the other cuts on P of Y. The single also has another Jewel poem on it called Flight #364. So in this case, Atlantic has done some (though they could definitly improve) advertising of this songstress. Also, I just listened to the "I Shot Andy Warhol" soundtrack (also from my radio station). It is great. There of course is the Jewel cover of Donovan Leitch's "Sunshine Superman," which is a lot more "rocky" than P of Y. But there is also the Troggs' "Love Is All Around" performed by R.E.M. (different version of their MTV Unplugged cover). Also there are new originals from Pavement and Yo La Tengo along with a great cover of Bob Dylan's "I'll Keep It With Me" by Bettie Serveert. Also there are fun songs from Luna (also covering Donovan Leitch) and Wilco (covering Neil Young from when he was in Buffalo Springfield). All in all, it is an enjoyable CD. Finally, I would just like to voice my disturbance about the significant number of people on this list who were unaware of the time of 120 Minutes. For a group of people who seem to be on the lookout for new music and musicians (such as Jewel), I would think that the time of 120 Minutes, which just celebrated its 10th year of giving us the new music which "normal" MTV has been unable to do regularly, would be known to all. Oh well. Thanks for listening to my blabbering. Hi all! maybe i should have specified that Atlantic did not release any commerical cd singles! Matt was obviously talking about Phyllis Barnabee---a PROMOTIONAL cd single---on that many of can't find and would goto great lengths to acquire (hint, hint Matt!!) I think that people are apt to but a cd single when they are unfamiliar with an artist, because if it isn't as good as they expected, then they're only out $3.99 instead of $11.99 (or at least this is how i often buy unfamiliar music) But i would imagine the next album will be accompanied with commercial cd singles as well as numerous promotional cd singles :) Does anyone know if Jewel is writing new songs for the upcoming album?
