Hey Angels I completely agree with Steve Dupree (sorry if that is mispelled) Jewel is bad news. She is like a Pringle once you start you can't stop. I've noticed that when i talk to my friend all I spew out is about Jewel. She thinks I'm a nut. But what can I say, she got me hook line and sinker. Anyway yesterday I posted that the Rugburns were coming to Kent State and I saw them, let me tell you, they are great. I found my cheeks hurting from laughing at all their lyrics and i talked to a few people and I heard that Jewel wrote a few songs and sung on their new albumn. I can't confirm if she sang, but I am sure she wrote some music or lyrics for their new album, it's something to check out. I got my tickets via ticketbastard today and I am psyched for May 22. I might wear my Rugburns shirt to see if she'll say anything, she can't miss it. It's bright green. Also I got an Atlantic sampler from the fall at Flashfest for $1 and it has Angle Standing By. So I have it on two CD's hey it was $1. Well thanks angels for standing by. PS. Warn all your friends, that Jewel has an angellic effect on you. These CDs aren't bootlegs, they're the real released CDs... the same as you buy in the stores. BMG and Columbia House have to get permision from the record labels to produce and sell these and I'm sure the labels don't do it unless there's money in it for them. Most artists get a base contract salary for their albums, and I guess most get a percentage of the sales (maybe not). I don't see why the ones at the record clubs would be any different. ------------------------------ From: intcsb02@midget.towson.edu Date: Fri, 26 Apr 1996 09:41:51 -0400 (EDT) Subject: That damn magazine thing To the guy who put that magazine susbscription on the digest: FUCK OFF this is a place to talk about jewel not sell stuff. The only Jewel connection I can make to apologize for using the list to pass on such a message is that when I gave Jewel a copy of one of my books when she was doing her series of concerts last fall, she liked it enough to talk to me in the middle of the show and ask when my next reading was and tell people to go. She says Jewl was >rather vulgar and obnoxious. I know she wasn't like that when I saw her, so >does anyone out there whose seen her with Dylan think she was vulgar? A lot of things are extremely subjective, and being vulgar is one of them. If someone says fuck, they can be considered vulgar by someone who never uses the word. I think this person was reacting to that. Jewel said she was "fucking happy" about playing with Dylan when I saw her in Springfield so I can see her saying something along those lines at UVM. Plus, Jewel appears rather sweet and innocent, so to add a few cuss words to that type of presence really accentuates the vulgar potential. And when she pointedly tells people to shut up while she is playing, that can certainly be construed as obnoxious. I dont think she is that way at all. People have called her honest on this list, and I think that is appropriate to this situation. Also, let's not forget that great line from Amadeus: "I'm a vulgar man, but I assure you my music is not." - -steve ------------------------------ From: mgf110@psu.edu (Garrett Fabian) Date: Fri, 26 Apr 1996 13:48:32 -0400 Subject: 120 Minutes? I was just lucky enough to discover her through Neal Copperman (who discovered her after she opened for Iris Dement), and attend quite a few of the Innerchange performances including one of the recording sessions, a performance at Discafe with a few other local artists, her first May Day festival performance, a Wikiup performance, her CD release party at the Hahn Cosmopolitan theater in San Diego, one of her Hotel Utah,San Francisco performances, her SD date opening for Peter Murphy, and now once in Minneapolis where I live now (soon to be twice). It would have been 3 times here in Minneapolis but she cancelled at the last minute when she was supposed to open for Belly. Plus I've tried to catch as many of her TV appearances as I can. I would have liked to have attended all of the Inner Change shows I could once I found out about her, but I was teaching a class on Thursday nights and didn't always get down there in time. I have spoken to Jewel on a few occassions (she used to stand at the door and shake everyone's hands on the way out), but I certainly don't know her well enough for her to even recognize me. I consider myself very lucky to have been able to see her in her coffeehouse days. But I'm by no means an expert on her, nor really even an acquaintance. Neal and I did our best to publicize her via the net when her album first came out (and even prior), raving about her on ecto and even posting some stuff about her on newsgroups, and urging people to check her out when she began her coffeehouse residency tour. We were the ones responsible for recording/compiling the Innerchange tapes (though Ken gets the credit for doing the work to tree them), in our efforts to get people to appreciate the full spectrum of Jewel's talent (the album really doesn't do her justice). So, it's been fun and as I've said before, it's been great to watch someone so deserving succeed. After re-reading this I hope this doesn't come across as sounding egotistical. I've always tried to downplay my role on this list. I'm just a fan like everybody else. I get my Jewel info the same way you all do (mainly through this list and the efforts of Hiranya to keep us up to date). I welcome all the new fans, and hope this place remains a friendly supportive environment where we can share all the latest news and info about one of our favorite artists. I'd also urge people to not become too obsessive--though I realize it's sometimes hard. I remember Jewel saying once about her fans, that she finds it hard to believe that people can find her life more interesting than their own. Well, that's enough rambling for today. Oh, and one more word of advice: If you're interested in spreading the gospel of Jewel--go out and buy another copy (or two or three) and give them to your friends. They make great gifts. I think the first issue will be free and then there will be a modest sum for subscription you could probably get more information from Geoff Warder (gwarder@icis.on.ca) who was putting together the mailing list: This message from Hiranya give a teeny bit more detail: "The first issue of the newsletter will be mailed March 22. It turns out that in most musicians' contracts with music companies (such as Jewel with Atlantic) have something in 'em (like hydrochloric acid) that says that they will allow Music Clubs (eg. Columbia House and BMG) to obtain the rights to their music and artwork (i.e. the cd booklet). Once the artist signs the contract, the Music CLub can take the album and manufacture it at their own plants (which usually turns out to be the music manufacturing plant that does the originals) and make money from their own cd's and tapes. All the expenses and profits are the Clubs' own, with no royalties going to the artists, unlike the albums sold from retailers who buy the products from the artists' companies. Some artist's don't like this and delay the release of the album through clubs for a long time (Pearl Jam kept Vitalogy from Columbia House for 12 months so that people would buy it in stores if they really wanted it) or take the Music Club clause out of their contracts (I think. Maybe they can't i don't know) The sales through music clubs do count on charts and Billboard, which is kinda good for the companies and artists to claim platinum and gold status, but it also takes away from the artists' royalties. That's my summary from memory of the article. It surprised the bejeesus out of me and made me feel kinda bad for buying some artists's cd's through Clubs (though I didn't buy Jewel's through them).
