I'm sure a producer or something gives them one, two, maybe three to choose from, but aside from that their only choice is probably to not attend. The first one is from last year when she played a free concert at the Puss Puss Cafe in Seattle. She played a free concert every Wednesday there for a month! I was able to see her twice there but only recorded her once. I kept the tape rolling throughout the entire concert. She has some really funny stories to tell, if you have never seen her live before. The other tape is just as good of quality as the last one. I recorded her when she opened for Edwin McCain at the Pioneer Square Theatre. She mentions on the tape about the first time she played in Seattle at the Puss Puss Cafe! She seemed really at home during this concert and talked to the crowd a lot. During her opening song (Pieces of You) she breaks in the middle to make fun of Dolores O'Reardon of the Cranberries (who she justs hates!) and she had the whole crowd roaring with laughter! She also talked of a story when her and some other guy in a band (sorry I forgot) were in Mexico and they witnessed a huge marijuana bust. They happened to be on a Federale boat at the time, and when the bust was over a Federale officer offered them to a party afterword (I wonder what they had in mind!). They politely refused but they did end up getting a picture of them with two Federale officers and literally a ton of Pot! She said that she wants to put that picture on the cover of her next albumn. I guess we just have to wait and see. During this concert she played a song called Nicoteene Love that will blow you away. She also sung a song about her brother that was very lyrichly vivid. Both these recordings were done on a very good quality tape recorder. It's not a DAT recorder but it is the next best thing! I am only interested in TRADES, sorry but I just don't want to give these recordings away to everybody. Please contact me if you would like to trade anything! Thanks a bunch! The shows were incredible. I saw her perform at her POY release party with the Rugburns as back up and it was so great. She also performed with the RB at Sunfest in San Diego. However, the best show was a $5 benefit show at the Innerchange with Steve Poltz and Gregory Page (of the RB). The place was packed and Jewel was a surprise guest. I'm going to the Iving Plaza show on 5\16 in NYC and it is my first Jewel concert. I've heard a lot of rumurs about her shows and I was wondering if sombody could help me separate fact from fiction. First of all, is it true that Jewel takes requests from the audience?, second, is it possible for anyone to get backstage at any of her concerts? and finally, how long is her average concert and what is set list, usually? Does anyone know where I can get the Rare Angels Tape? ------------------------------ From: PAUL KYUSAM KIM Date: Wed, 24 Apr 1996 16:54:12 -0400 (EDT) Subject: jewel on dave and other gobbledegook I didn't think that Jewel rushed WWSYS. It's that whole tempo rubato thing for you music people (who was it that mentioned that before?). Anyways, at least for me, playing the cello, you often don't stick to the tempo that you start with, and you don't always start at the same tempo. you just gotta let the mood of the moment and the music take you wherever it does. Ooooh you sound so existential, Paul. and about her holding "your" you guys aren't talking about the "get out on the streets, girls and bust YOUR butts" "your" are you? The person-who-I-don't-know-his-name-cause-I-deleted-his-messages who wrote about the line said that it was the line "who will save YOUR souls." I have the show on tape but I don't have access to a VCR at the moment so I can't confirm which "your" it was. The point of this convoluted message is to point out that, if it is the "bust your butts" one, then I found that it was not held for an inordinate amount of time. All the live performances that I have heard of WWSYS (from radio and tv and whatnot) have had Jewel fooling around with the tempo and holding that "your." And about her blue guitar, it don't look like Chris Smither's blue guitar. Course, they were probably made by different people. And I don't think that her new guitar is that big. Actually, you know what it is? The guitar is actually smaller than a normal size guitar. It looks big though because Jewel shrunk:0 she's no longer 5'5" and 3/4 but now 3'2". And that's a fact, Jack:) hee hee You know who has (or had, I don't know if she still has it) a huge honkin guitar? Delores O'Riordan of the Cranberries. The times that I have seen them on Conan, SNL and other shows, she has been dwarfed by her guitar. Or maybe its just my memory going haywire. I can't believe that Kathleen used the term "chick!" I'm apalled:) Actually, I'm a Paul, but that is stupid. Heh. My sister berates me for addressing her as "hey chick!" I dunno, I've had mixed answers from persons of the female persuasion regarding their reaction to the word. And I don't think that Dave is clueless about anyone younger than him in general. I think that he just doesn't have the time to research all of his guests enough to have a decent and comfortable conversation with each and everyone, so he has to stick with who and what he knows and learn abou some of his guests and let his staff do the rest of the research and booking. Same with all the other talk show hosts. I am surprised about the Gillian Anderson/X-Files thing (hey! latest Rolling Stone has the Australian 1995 year-end edition cover of Mulder and Scully in bed and finally has an extensive article on the show. yay), since David Duchovny has been on the show several times and Dave L. seems to like him and should know a little about the show from him. I think that Gillian Anderson would fare better on Leno because he's also had DD on a couple times and admits that while he didn't watch the X-Files before DD went on the first time, he was hooked after the first visit. That skirt that Jewel wore was surprising and distracting. I've never seen her with anything but long pants or a full length skirt. I thought she was vamping it up there. Oh, I did like the performance. But the lighting alternately made her hair silver, green, brown, and blond. It's like she went punk, then indie, then normal and back again. So, who is going to the Boston concert on May 18th? How much are tickets, anyway? and is anyone offering their abode for a get together? It's nice to hear from some of the old-timers and know that they didn't leave the list during the several flamewars we had. Hi Steve and Jon and Colin and Jeff and others I'm forgetting or not aware of (never end a sentence with a preposition!). And for those old-timers who post regularly like Neile, hi to you too. You know, I think we got a bunch of new people on the list, judging from all the posts about requests for boots (to the head!) and stuff. What's the list count up to now, mister list owner? Sarah (the one who posted about WWSYS being played by Jewel too much), take a breath when you write:) Or at least use punctuation. I nearly ran out of breath reading your post. That's. What punctuation- is, for: to provide; rests and. breaths between words...and phrases. ya dig? Paul " I am not Carter Navarro, the pirate king, even though we write similar posts. I like his posts. his are funny. mine are stooopid. but I did start this middle name sig thing. At least I hadn't seen anyone else do it before I started. but it's probably not original either. As far as "teenage attitudes" go: i muist admit, the thing that first made me notice jewel was that she was a babe! I noticed "this cute chick on mtv" a couple times. and then i decided one day that hey, what exactly was that cute chick singing? So i sat down and listened to the song. After really listening to it once, and being rather awed, i decided to go home and get a video tape to tape it. After i watched that tape a few times and the vcr ate it, i decided to go get her cd. And watch her every chance i got (i sat there and watch alternative nation just to see her intro songs!) and read lots of web pages and stuff. My point here is, even if some people just think of her as a babe, there will be others, like me, who just notice her because she is, and then get awed by her music. Sure, some people will be immature, but if they wouldn't have noticed her at all anyways, who cares? I was dissapointed by her performance on letterman, the first time i saw it. But, at that time all i had heard was the version on the cd. Each time i watch the lett. performance, i like it even more. I have yet to be seriously distracted by the infamous skirt. I barely even noticed the first time. Ok, well maybe a little. it is hard not to :) ... but i still managed to listen to her sing at the same time.... And as far as boots go, why does everyone always want to trade boots? what are we brand new fans supposed to do? I thiknk everyone with great boots should be nice and _sell_ them to people who don't have anything to trade. This of course doesn't apply to the people who _do_ sell them, like those mentioned more than once in the FAQ some people obviously didn't bother to read.... - -stan (http://www.wpi.edu/~sdupree) ------------------------------ From: "jeffrey hanson" Date: Wed, 24 Apr 96 15:35:19 cdt Subject: Re: Jewel and a Band and other reminesces from an old-timer Greg meant to sent this to the list as well as to me: ______________________________ Forward Header __________________________________ Subject: Re: Jewel and a Band and other reminesces from an old-timer Author: Greg Dunn at NSDSMTP Date: 4/24/96 3:24 PM "jeffrey hanson said:" > > As Neile pointed out, when she's not playing her guitar, she can really > concentrate on her singing and her voice is even more spectacular. Yeah, that has changed in the last year, too. I noticed that last summer in Indy she tried some of her lesser-known bits, while in Feb. she stuck almost completely to the album. That way, I got to hear an incredible range of tunes, and no repeats; but I'd rather hear everything every time :) > Well, enough reminiscing. It's been so great to be a witness to Jewel's > rise in success. I really have never seen anyone as deserving. It really does seem that her career has shifted into high gear. I guess we'll just have to accept that we must 'let go' and watch her soar; we have supported her and loved her through the lean times, and I'm sure she appreciates that. I know we all feel just a tiny bit 'possessive' because we knew about her when the world had yet to hear of her talent, but she's ready to take that quantum jump to stardom, and we have to accept that she is the one in control. I believe that she will make the right decisions to balance her integrity with the inevitable obligations that come with superstardom. Now watch her dust! Go get 'em, Jewel! BTW, has anyone noticed how fast the list has been adding new members lately, and how the flamage has disappeared?
