POSTED and i screamed as loud as i could, and she actually played SOTR :) it was so cool... and on the ride home i heard the YWMFM remix on the radio :) and after that i heard amanda marshall on the radio, and i remember people talkin' about her and she was wonderful :) it was a wonderful musical night!!! but i would really appreciate knowing which show was the "I shall be released" duet!!! Thanks in advance :) dave diciccda@saber.udayton.edu ------------------------------ From: rkantrow@Phoenix.kent.edu (Kantrowitz Ronald ) Date: Sun, 21 Apr 1996 02:22:08 -0400 (EDT) Subject: Jewel's Potential Hi Angels I have a comment to make, and I don't want this to sound to harsh. I really enjoy listening to Jewel. Infact it is the only thing that whisps me off to slumber every night. I just put in my POY and before the fifth track I am gone. Now, like most of you we enjoy Jewel whole heartedly, but I am not so sure she will be as someone mentioned "bigger than Alanis" because her style is not marketable as Alanis or other people (dare I mention Hootie on this list, or shall I feel the wrath?) because she is not in a band. WHSYS is on the air because she has backup and has a more upbeat music. I have heard the YWMFM version with backup band and it is more upbeat. Now I really enjoy Jewel because she is solo and I love that. (Also there is just something that a woman with a guitar does for me, I don't know what it is, but mmmm I just love it.) I don't want her to taint her style with a back up band, but if she wants to truely make it big, I think she just has to. I think we could see a new Jewel with back up. Eric Clapton has back up and he is still a strong guitar player. Well if anyone would like to comment on this matter either email me personally or we could talk about this on the mailer. I think it is a better thing to talk about than if Jewel is going to pose nude in Playboy. (If she does, she better have her guitar with her, hee he) I did hear someone mention that Jewel has been pondering this idea of a back up band, and I think it would be a great step in the right direction, if she is aiming for the golden ring. I also feel it is odd that she has gotten so much more exposure lately with her song. Being on VH1, MTV and Letterman and it seems that it has all happened so suddenly after a long time since her album came out. Kinda odd. Usually when an album comes out one song seems to have lots of exposure immedietly and then they market the next songs. But since this album is almost hit it's time since her next album is coming out in a few months, it could be good for the next album. Who knows? Ok I am rambling and for those of you who have read so far, thanks. Thanks Angels for standing by. rkantrow@phoenix.kent.edu - -- . . . . . . . . . . . . She was awesome! Her duet with Dylan was the highlight. However I have a question for anyone else who was there. Did she cut the show short? Near the end of her set she asked the crowd up back if they could quiet down because it was hard for her to sing with all the noise. They didn't. After two more songs she was done. I don't blame her if she did cut it short. I thought she was patient, I noticed the noise about two songs before she said anything. I know most people were there to see Dylan but isn't it common courtesy to be quiet when someone is performing? I can't wait to see her in Boston as a headliner! -Bill ------------------------------ From: Plan8Clair@aol.com Date: Sun, 21 Apr 1996 15:43:22 -0400 Subject: compilation album Hi. I just read in the paper that Jewel will be contributing an "original track" (I'm hoping this means something not already on" POY") to a compilation album benefiting the Surf Rider Foundation. Proceeds from the album will go to help clean up Southern California oceans and beaches, which, believe me, need big-time help. Unless of course, you don't mind swimming amid a certain mysterious brown foamy substance. The album, entitled "Mom: Music for Our Mother Ocean," will be out in June on Interscope Records, and it will also include songs by Pearl Jam, Silverchair, Porno for Pyros, Everclear, Primus and Brian Setzer. Which one is that? Ahh! After a long delay the synapses finally fired! I now remember that the video I referred to is the one for "You Were Meant For Me," directed by Sean Penn. I have never seen this video other than the clips aired during MTV News' promo spots from last February. Like Sean Hooks, I recall Entertainment Weekly giving it a nice review some time ago (I still couldn't find the article itself after a thorough scouring of my extensive library of back issues). I am fairly amazed that it gets so little (as in NO) airplay, especially with Penn's name attached to it. Ronald further wrote: > I also am aware as many of you are, that VH1 is owned by MTV. I thought so, but sometimes MTV puts a nice big EXCLUSIVE logo on the bottom left corner of the screen, which would seem to imply that you won't catch that video on any other channel. As far as I know, VH1 IS the only other video channel. This still doesn't explain why I haven't seen the other video yet! Why must the Gods of Programming torture me? Time for another subject. Upon a recent review of alt.nation 2 I've got some stuff to relate. First, after Jewel showed off her snazzy new boots, she said, "Much cooler than these boots, OR ME, is Smashing Pumpkins." The emphasis on "or me" is my own doing, because I was honestly a bit surprised to hear her say that. I cross the line separating self-deprecation from plain old masochism quite often, but I'm still shocked when others do it. So, Jewel, hear this: the day Billy Corgan treats his fans with the respect and kindness that you do yours, I will not only ruin the pants I am wearing out of disbelief, but will return home to find that my entire wardrobe of undergarments has miraculously self-soiled (oh, the eloquence!). Don't get me wrong: Smashing Pumpkins is one of my favorite bands (I bought "Mellon Collie & the Infinite Sadness" the day it came out), but the association you have with your fans earns you a medal worth far more than any pendant Corgan could attach to his ZERO shirt. Gad, that sounds so mean to Billy, but he did wear that shirt a LOT. Now that I'm done pleading with thin air, time to let everyone who is actually here in on an important secret. Thanks to my Secret Sign Language Decoder Pin, I have deciphered Otts (I'm still not spelling that right, am I?) Kilcher's secret message. Remember, only members of Otts' Secret Circle can decipher Otts' secret message. The message is . . . BE SURE TO DRINK YOUR OVALTINE. No, no! I really don't know what he's saying. I learned a bit of sign language in elementary school, but all I can remember is the letter "a" and "pig." The only time I can foresee this knowledge being useful is if I give a farm tour to a class of deaf children and one of them points at a porker and signs "what is that?" "A pig!" I can sign back. Of course, beyond that . . . Deaf child: (pointing at horse) "What is that?" Me: "A pig!" Deaf child: (pointing at tractor) "What is that?" Me: "A pig!" Deaf child: (pointing at pig again) "What is that?" Me: "A chrysanthemum!" - --- Carter "A Pig!" - or - "Damn, My Messages Are Getting Long!"
