Well, the time has finally come for me to quit lurking and say "Hello"! I first saw Jewel on the VH-1 special with Melissa, Joan, and Paula and was absolutely blown away. The feeling she put into her songs cut right through me. Since then, I've tried to catch every appearance that I could and have never been let down. I've been dying to see her "live" after reading all your posts and it looks like I will finally get my chance this weekend in Orlando! I still can't believe my luck in finding out about the concert. It just happened that I was shopping for new CD's when I heard the advertisement for it on the store radio. Jewel was coming to the land of the mouse! Well, I've got my tickets and can't wait for the show! I'll let you know how it was! It's really great the way the world is turning onto her music. It doesn't seem like that long ago when I had to really look for her "Pieces..." CD, and just yesterday, I found her CD's fully stocked in several area stores! It's nice to see REAL talent getting recognized! Is anyone else on the list from Florida and going to the Orlando show? Probably has something to do with standing up in front of an audience (albeit virtual) without her guitar. Notice how she kept her hands in her pockets? Standard procedure when you're appearing live w/o your prop. No biggie. But how cool, how smooth she was. Charmingly direct, no affectations, no pretenses. I loved how she showed off her green boots like she was sharing the results of a shopping trip with a friend. Believe it or not, this is really the first time I've ever paid attention to Jewel the person instead of Jewel the performer/composer. My friends at work (no, none of them is named Brett) tease me about my reasons for being a Jewel fan, and it's almost irritating to have to defend myself: "No, really, it's her phenomenal talent -- that angel voice, those clever turns of phrase, that gift of musical truth..." Sigh. Have to admit, though, she looks good up there. Maybe we could arrange to have Kennedy bite her tongue so Jewel has to sub for her semi-permanently? :) - -- | Greg Dunn | "Information is not knowledge; | | GregDunn@aol.com | knowledge is not wisdom; | | gregdunn@indy.net | wisdom is not truth." | | Greg@gdunn.nawc-ad-indy.navy.mil | -- Frank Zappa | ------------------------------ From: Mike Connell Date: Fri, 19 Apr 1996 01:29:24 -0400 Subject: Jewel on Alt Nat Thurs Well, well, that was MUCH better. As i sing along in amazement that I'm actualy hearing this song over the radio when I realize after the song was over she was playing live at a local radio station. I was uable to get hardly any of it on tape except for the last song she did. She did a one minute version of chime bells, and talked for little bit with the DJ. This is just what I needed today. I'm depressed about not being able to see her tonight at the strand. One thing of slight note was a question the DJ asked of Jewel as they were saying goodbye. I got this on tape. He asked her if she had some pre-show ritual she does before every show. Jewel response was that she never usually tells anyone, but then went ahead. She talked about how she prays in her own way for all of the angels in the world, and prays that her intent will hit home to those who listen to her. This is a sumary of what she said, not a word for word recap. He also mentioned how Jewel's whole family is from Switzerland, and how she hopes to some day go visit there. Jewel's written, what 150+ songs and seems to come up with songs everyday; Ani has released 6 albums of new stuff and 1 compilation of redone songs and is releasing a new album May 21st, all since 1990. and that's that. I got confirmation that the HFStival is June 1st (they won't be announcing the lineup until the 29th of April). So that means, unless some other DC radio station is putting on a radio Fest that day, Jewel is playing the HFStival. Better be the side stage. A list of previous HFStival alumni: 1995 mainstage:Shudder to Think (definately not commercial success, but suitable for big stage), Bush, Better than Ezra, General Public, Mike Watt, Courtney Love solo, Primus, PJ Harvey, Soul Asylum, Tony Bennett, and the Ramones. Maybe they'll have a stage just for her. And special seating just for her fans. Yeah! oh, usually the sidestage bands hang around to the side of the stage to sign stuff. Mariah is a "pop-star" Jewel is an artist and musician. I know that Mariah Carey ccan "hit some highnotes" and yes some of her stuff is "pretty". But, there is no meaning, originality, or soul in her work. And, judging by her success, that is what much of America wants-"background music". So, I think Mariah Carey can go ahead and keep doing what she does, because she does it very well. Just remeber, that she's not doing what Jewel (along with other female vocalists such as Tori, Sarah McL, and sometimes the Indigo Girls, etc. etc.) is doing. Does anyone have details-SPECIFICALLY WHICH VERSES EACH PERFORMER SANG? "I Shall be Released" is a famous Dylan song that he wrote in 1967. However, Dylan singing the song was not released until the album "Bob Dylan's Greatest Hits Volume II, in 1971. Dylan had not sung it on a single or album before then. It has subsequently been on the Dylan albums At Budokan, and Biograph. The song has been covered by over 60 other artists, it is incredibly famous. The six most recent recordings were: 1992 Jerry Garcia, 1993 Chrissie Hynde, 1993 Milltown Brothers, 1993 Toni Vescoli, and 1994 Blue Diamonds. The lyrics to the song follow: I SHALL BE RELEASED (Words and Music by Bob Dylan) 1967, 1976 Dwarf Music They say ev'rything can be replaced, Yet ev'ry distance is not near. So I remember ev'ry face Of ev'ry man who put me here. I see my light come shining From the west unto the east. Any day now, any day now, I shall be released. They say ev'ry man needs protection, They say ev'ry man must fall. Yet I swear I see my reflection Some place so high above this wall. I see my light come shining From the west unto the east. Any day now, any day now, I shall be released. Standing next to me in this lonely crowd, Is a man who swears he's not to blame. All day long I hear him shout so loud, Crying out that he was framed. I see my light come shining From the west unto the east. Any day now, any day now, I shall be released.
