Looks like a decent movie, maybe a rental. One of the stars was on Conan (the show) and said a coven in LA had put a curse on the movie. The clip they showed was three of the girls lifting a friend using the chant "Light as a feather, stiff as a board." I remember doing this in Elementary School. Never thought of it as particularly magickal or anything. Interesting how hollywood interprts things, isn't it? (for those who don't remember Jewel has a song on the soundtrack) Before Ghost in the Shell (cool look stylistically, existential mumblings here and there, mediocre story, eh , if you're into that kind of stuff), they showed a preview for "I Shot Andy Warhol." Looks like a movie I'll see. Although the preview was edited into very short snippets (which I usually take to mean that the movie has no feeling, but it looks real good) it could be interesting. The relevance...it was very strange to see Jewels name listed in the final screen, because she's on the soundtrack. She was third or fourth on the li of artists. She's movin up in the scheme. When they advertise the soundtracks, doesn't that mean the movie won't be any good? Beats me. (Seems to be a trend; last time I saw Jewel it was pouring rain too.) Jewel came out in a blue satiny turtle neck and black leather pants and her patented Pablo Neruda blue guitar and started her about 40 minute set. Set list as best as I could scribble it down was: 1. Pieces of You (yes with the Dead Dole/Delores/Keanu stuff--got some laughs which is what it's there for. She then said as she was driving in her car to get here she said to herself I'm opening for Bob Dylan! I'm fucking happy!) 2. Sometimes It Be that Way (with Jewel repeating the first two lines of the "Romeo was a very nice man" verse by accident, then catching herself and going into "Goldilocks well she knew three bears") 3. A new one to me, the chorus went: If this is what love is there's no love song left in me 4. Life's A Big Mystery Show 5. Another new one to me, You're Here When Gone (?) 6. I cant remember the title to this but the chorus is There's no need to explain, it's perfectly clear 7. Drive Away 8. I Got the Blues More Than You Do Blues (w/ a pretty good solo--she's gettin' better on that blues guitar stuff) 9. Near You Always 10. Angel Standing By (one word: transcendent--worth the price of admission just to hear her sing this; the album version is great but live it is amazing) 11. Another new one to me, Nothing Without Love (?) 12. Who Will Save Your Soul 13. Chime Bells Ring (them yodels really drive the crowd wild dont they) A good set, crowd was very receptive and she was very appreciative for us coming out early to hear her. And I have to mention Bobby. Heavy legend action is all I can say. There was a time when I saw Dylan and I couldnt tell he was singing All Along the Watchtower until the last verse. Not so last night. Two hours of music, you could easily understand him, totally rockin band, lots of harmonic solos. He was awesome. Set list for anyone who cares was: 1. Down in the Flood 2. Lay Lady Lay (not quite the Ministry version but great regardless :) ) 3. All Along the Watchtower 4. Most Likely You'll Go Your Way and I'll Go Mine 5. Tears of Rage 6. Silvio (totally killer version) (the unplugged set) 7. Tangled Up in Blue (the Blood on the Tracks version not the Real Live or Bootleg series version) 8. Masters of War 9. One I'd never heard before, it was great (back to plugged, with the kids rushing the stage) 10. Maggie's Farm 11. This Wheel's on Fire 12. Seein the Real You At Last (encore time) 13. Alabama Getaway (smokin-kick-ass version) 14. My Back Pages (unplugged, awesome harp solo) 15. Rainy Day Woman #12 & 35 (I feel I should add for the uninitiated, this is the everybody-must-get-stoned song) Great night of music. Whoever else is going to see these 2 together in the coming days, you are in for a great time. - -steve ------------------------------ From: "sandy" Date: Wed, 17 Apr 1996 10:22:39 +0000 Subject: FLORIDIANS OK, here's the final info...the band list for the Earth Day concert this Sunday the 21st at the Renaissance here in Orlando (not sure exactly where it is) is: JEWEL!!!!!! Look the word up) Actually I don't know what to put for a subject. augh friggin' son of a motherless freakin pasty half ass rassum frassum doohickey mother of pearl. friggin. I don't know when the HFStival is gonna be or who's playing, since I'm up here in MA and my friend in MD has not written to me about the show. They prbably have not announcced it yet on the air (excuse the typos). The date would make sense since it's a Saturday (it's always on a Saturday) and last year's HFStival was the 3rd of June. As you can tell by my rant above, I ain't happy bout the possibility of Jewel playing the HFStival. It just wouldn't be right. The side stage might be ok, but not in RFK. I've been to the past three HFStivals in RFK, and the crowd on the lawn is always moshing, no matter what, so there's no way I would risk getting up to the stage to listen to Jewel. "but people wouldn't mosh to Jewel" you say? ho ho hoooo. This is the crowd that moshed to Linger by the Cranberries when they played for free on the Mall in DC and caused the security to stop the show one and a half songs into the set because of the rowdiness. now, if she were to do the side stage, that would be better; They usually have the less well-known bands there and there isn't as much of a rowdy crowd. Suddenly Tammy played it last year and it was neato. But I don't know how WHFS would categorize Jewel, if she's worthy of being a mainstager or a sidestager. They did have her on Just Passing Through and I think that WWSYS was in the teens in the top 99 of '95 countdown. I've been going through this same worry/ranting abut Sarah McLachlan since she's doing a small acoustic tour this summer on multi-band bills, kinda like radio fests. Although nothing is confirmed right now (news on the 22nd) she is opening for Sting on two dates in Canada. That Philly radio fest: could it be something sponsored by WXPN? I wonder who else is playing. It can't be the singer/songwriter weekend, can it? That's always a good, fun showcase. Brett's gone. how sad. I'm gonna miss him. He was so nice. and thoughtful. and...wait who am I talking about? Who's brett? :) hee hee lollipop lollipop ooololly lollipop Reading the subject headings these past couple days, I kept thinking that people were talking about the Mask (the comic book/Jim Carrey movie where he says "Smokin'!). tabacky. ah well hum. I think that Christine Lavin and Dar Williams voices sound very similar. And I think that they both write funny songs and serious songs and have a similar sound. It's that new england breeding. I don't know. This isn't coming out the way I wanted it to. When I first listened to Racecar Driver, I immediately thought of Sensitive New Age Guys because of that spoken part in the song. Anyways, I think (I'm thinking too much today) that most folk inspired artists write at least some funny songs, because they basically write about all aspects of life and funny things happen in life. although Christine's, Dar's, and Jewel's funninness are different. god that last sentence sucked ass. Christine is more like a stand up comedian, Dar is more like a story-telling humorist, and jewel is messed up in the head:) Just listen to Daddy She's a Goddess. Can you say Son of Deliverance? Finally: smeg fudgin gimboid dimwit crappy damnable stupid headed goldurn fudrucker. I didn't see Jewel last night in Springfield (and it's only twenty min. away). Didn't wanna shell out 25 bucks for it. My friend who went to see Bob (he loves Bob) said that Jewel (who he has never heard) was awesome and that her yodelling was crazy, man. I wish I had gone now. and now that she's touring, she'll be playing in Boston which is 3 hours away. damn. I might see her at the HFStival if I can procure tickets and if she is indeed playing there. I barely got tickets last year. They sold out in like two hours (60,000 or so tickets. wow) and I got through to ticket master after 1 and a half hours of redial. Paul "things just ain't goin' well for me. Follow route 26 south for about 10 miles... you will start out in farmland, but soon it will get more commercial and populated. you will pass the Nittany mall on your right... keep following route 26s.... at one point you will come down a hill and see TALL apartments in front of you. as you follow route 26s (which is the same as College Ave) you will come "into town". It is a very noticeable chance in atmosphere... it becomes a one-way street (students walking, lots of shops and stores in a row). Campus is on the right... downtown is on the left. you will see a mcdonalds on the left about 2 blocks after route 26 becomes the one-way Colllege Ave. after the first light past mcdonalds, you will come upon the HUB lawn on the right hand side. Parallel park anywhere on college ave (dont forget to feed the meters until 6pm) and if listen for the loud music/noise. You can also park in one of the 4 gargaes downtown. you will not be able to miss the HUB lawn. When in doubt, just ask someone. we are all pretty nice here. =) from Pittsburgh area: take Route 22 East to around Altoona, where you will pick up Route 220 North (make sure you are NOT going towards Bedford)... follow route 220 north to Route 322 east. Stay on Route 22 East for about 7 miles... follow sign for the Atherton Street Exit/Business Route 322 Exit. It will be the first state college exit. Follow route 322 past walmart and past blockbuster video... i dont know offhand how many lights, but you will cross college avenue (kinko's copy center on the left) and make a left at the next light (just past the Atherton hotel). now you are on beaver avenue (the other one-way street). follow beaver avenue to Garner Street, make a left onto Garner. At the light ay the bottom of garner, make a left onto College avenue. Parallel park anywhere on college ave (dont forget to feed the meters until 6pm) and if listen for the loud music/noise.
