Just when I was about to give up on MTV as a viable network, along comes my favorite singer (well, after Trent) to return it to musical splendor. The "Timer" button on my VCR is already glowing. And Hiranya says the brass invited her back? Duh-cubed! Her charm is irresistible! However, before Jewel does alt.nation again, the MTV execs should rotate her through the other shows first: I'd particularly like to see her hosting Yo! MTV Raps (ack, pbbblffft!). Of course, once Jewel makes her final "live" appearance on 120 Minutes in two weeks, I may as well deprogram MTV from my television again. I think I need my own Jewel Channel. - --- Carter "Call Your Local Cable Operator" Navarro ------------------------------ From: PDeSanti@lmumail.lmu.edu Date: Mon, 15 Apr 1996 15:10:14 -0700 Subject: Info Thanks for all the great Hiranya. I really hope Atlanta receives her well- saw tori last night there and "Me and a Gun" got the mature response it demanded (it's about her being raped, although her real life attacker used a knife). I hope the crowd at the Cotton Club will have a similar interest/respect for Jewel. The Cotton Club isn't large in any way for those of you that aren't familiar- get your tickets early! A pleasant surprise. WNEW (102.7) has her on every now and then, although they do tend to be flavor of the month over there. She did an in-studio concert about a month ago, four or five songs and a snippet of interview, and was very charming and well-spoken; I didn't know who she was at the time, but it's one of the things that converted me. That and the SPEW disc, which I bought on a lark for 88 well-spent cents. Bought the CD weeks back, and was a very happy fella. Hmm, that's called chromaesthesia, and it's the most common form of synaesthesia, which is generally when one sense crosses over to another. I don't experience this either, although most people will have a vague color sense that goes with music--lush greens, sad blues, red-hot blues, etc. In theory about 15% of the population is supposed to be more or less synaesthetic, only a very few strongly so. Did a paper on this once in college, it's pretty interesting stuff. While I do not wish to turn this into a political debate, I must disagree with Doug's grossly overgeneralized statement about liberal and conservative being directly related to being younger and older, respectively. In today's society being liberal does not automatically equate with being a Democrat. Perfect example, Bill Weld, the Gov. of Mass. is liberal, but he is a prominent and well-respected Republican. Another example, Sam Nunn the Senator from Georgia is a well-respected Democrat, but alas, Sam is quite conservative. Also, President Clinton's strondest support comes from voters 18-25 AND voters over 55. Doug has a right to his opinion, but I feel it is misleading and overgeneralized. While I probably should have replied privately to Doug, I felt that this needed to be said publicly since his comment was made publicly. Equating democrats as liberals and republicans as conservatives is too reductionist in today's society. The two party system is not what it once was. With the emergence of a substantial bloc of independent voters, the two major parties are very centrist. Jewel's music should not be analyzed in terms of the politics of her rehearsed stage patter. The music is of the utmost importance; however, i hate to see misleading statements go unqualified. Jewel has the freedom to discuss politics freely, but I have a funny feeling that many of us don't care a lick about her political beliefs. The music is the core concern, for me anyway. Thanks for listening and feel free to criticize me or if you wish to flame me, please do so in private :) I did not intend to flame Doug, so i hope this is not taken to be a flame. Doug merely stated his point of view and I just exercised my right to be heard. On VH1 Crossroads she talked about having to maintain her spirituality. Songs like Pieces of you, I'm Sensitive, and Angel Standing By show Jewel's innocence and her spirituality. I think that's a positive which attracts a lot of people to her. Negative remarks are a turn off even if they are directed at someone you don't like or don't agree with. I love Jewel's music and hope that over time she can withstand the negative influences that can unfortunately come with success. ------------------------------ End of jewel-digest V1 #145 ***************************
