I'm so glad Jewel's appearing in Boston in May - I tried to get tickets Hi Chris, For those who haven't heard the marijuana story yet: =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= Bubbly flower child Jewel's serious showbiz savvy. by Tim Perlich There's a lot more to Jewel Kilcher than the precocious, sunny dispositioned coffee-house singer that appears on her charming Pieces of You debut. Ask anyone who squeezed into one of her thrill-packed Monday-night sessions at C'est What this past March and they'll set you straight. That seemingly naive little flower child who recorded sweet, uncomplicated odes to being a sensitive soul in a world of cynics could easily flip the script and turn a raunchy race-car metaphor or drop a stunningly astute observation about her role as the object of lustful desires. Of course, there' also Jewel's carefully rehearsed between-song banter, slyly delivered with exactly the right amount of off-hand whimsy to appear spontaneous. In the unlikely event that she hasn't got the audience eating out of her hand after 60 minutes of gushing exuberance, she always has her surefire showstopper of a yodel to fall back on. And don't be fooled by that coy pout. Jewel may be just 20 years old, but this sharp, career-minded young mover, who honed her act as a preteen in miner bars across Alaska, has the showbiz savvy of a stogie-puffing vaudevillian. Cultivating humour "Doing the album was a real learning experience for me," reveals Jewel with conference-room seriousness. "I think if I put a funny, spoofy song like Race Car Driver on the record, it probably would've been chosen as my single and I'd be known for that. I'm not a very serious person, but I'm glad I'm being perceived as more of a serious songwriter than someone who writes novelty tunes. I didn't really know how to marry the two aspects. "I'm still cultivating my sense of humour at the moment and I'm trying to write with more humour in my songs. It's difficult to encompass a whole show on one album. A lot of humour comes from the stories I tell and you can't really capture that on an album. I guess you could include the banter but it would make for a really long record." Jewel has also learned a lot about her audience by playing her strategically mapped, four-cornered circuit of shows in March and April. After appearing Monday nights in Toronto, she would then shuffle off to her Wednesday Chicago gig and then Detroit on Thursdays, Columbus, Ohio on Saturdays and back to Toronto for Monday. Not only did the cleverly devised pseudo-residencies help build Jewel dedicated local followings, it provided pertinent information on pacing her performances, which she's now applying to larger capacity venues. "Last night I played this radio festival with all these alternative bands like Catherine Wheel and Bush. To get up there with an acoustic guitar, in the middle of a mosh pit, you really need something up your sleeve. "I usually start with something upbeat like Race Car Driver to get people's wit going and them move into some more serious songs. After that, maybe Go;d Gift to Women, the one that goes with the hitch-hiking story. Sometimes I tell the story, sometimes I don't, depending on the crowd. Some audiences need to be drawn in a bit more. Then I can throw in a pretty one like Angel Standing By and end with the yodel. I used to begining shows with the yodel to get people's attention but I found it was a hard act to follow." When it comes to tale-telling, Jewel's hitch-hiking experiences during regular runs from her San Diego home to Mexico City provided her with more than a few life-threatening adventures to draw upon. The one in which she stumbles into a drug bust while frolicing on the Pacific coast of Mexico is hard to beat. "Steve Poltz from the Rugburns is a riding buddy of mine," recalls Jewel of her fateful road-trip vacation, "and we were looking for a deserted bay that some local Mexican guy had told us about. After 12 hours of driving, we somehow ended up on this dirt road in the middle of the night with absolutely no idea where we were, although we heard water. Hemp adventure "We found this 'resort', which was really a plywood shack that had been closed down, so we broke in and went to sleep. The next morning, we awoke to find ourselves surrounded by the beautiful blue ocean. An old woman was cooking breakfast when some Mexican Federales stopped by. We asked them, in our terrible Spanish, where we could rent a boat to look at the whales. They said we could come along on their boat. "Once we got out around the bay we asked these seven Federales, strapped with guns, what they were up to. They told us they were looking for drug smugglers. I asked them if it could be dangerous and they said, 'Yes, there's usually a lot of shooting when making arrests.' Just then, one of the guys spotted a suspicious-looking boat on shore. They started speeding toward it while handing out these automatic rifles. Here I am in a bikini, saying, 'Are you sure this is proper procedure?' "When we got ashore, the shooting started and Steve and I started running for cover through the crossfire. Eventually the Federales rounded up the alleged smugglers but they didn't find any drugs - though they said they could smell pot. So they took one of the drug runners aside and beat the location of the stash out of him. Then we all traveled back to a spot where there was 500 kilos of marijuana stacked in potato sacks. That's a huge pile. "Anyway, we helped then load these sacks on the the Federales' boat to be taken back. After this five-hour ordeal, they gave both Steve and me a handful of pot, which we passed on to the cook at the resort. She insisted she needed it for her arthritis." The similarities are strongest when Williams says at the end of this song, "and he just turned to me and said, 'Well, I guess that our dreams went up in smoke (huh-huh)' and I said 'No, our dreams went up in dreams, you stupid pothead." That was at the AGO. I missed that too, I was elsewhere {probably the Volcano in K-W}. The Group of Seven were indeed all painters. They took their inspiration from the landscape and geography of Canada.
