I'll sum up Jewel's short short short opening for Bob... 4,000 people... Loud as all hell... Her essence was very different... She had a BLUE guitar with what looked like little stars at the end... Was very beautiful... Pieces Of You - Dolores/Keanu/Dole/Buchanan... Oh yeah Bon Jovi too Sometimes It Be That Way - Very, very well done... She belted out the song throughout its entirety Race Car Driver 1000 Miles Away - Made me want to cry... She sounded really hurt throughout the song Little Sister The Cold Song - I guess it's not a polka anymore God's Gift To Women - Said 'mother...' instead of 'motherfucker' Love Song - lyrics were different Angel Standing By Near You Always Deep Water Who Will Save Your Soul Chime Bells Short set, no new songs, but still was incredible... the audience - mostly Dylan fans - really liked her... Got pictures, got a surprisingly really, really good recording, met really nice people.... Oh yeah, I yelled out Nikos... She just smiled =) But didn't play it... Oh well... Got to venue, the Simon Forum at drew U., at seven, an hour before the show. Was looking around and talking to security who said she had soundchecked earlier and looked great. Then at around seven thirty I figured out where she would be making her entrance from and saw her, from about sixty feet away, talking to a couple of her people, managers, roadies, friends, etc. So I waited there figuring that she'd come down to the stage passing where I was standing, behind a fence and a curtain but the curtain was open where I was standing. I seemed to be the only person who noticed this. So at like ten to or five to eoght she strolls dowm with her guitar and that ponytail guy. She stops and kneels to tune it about ten feet from where I am. So I called out to her and said "I hope you have a great show." She smiled and waved, I nodded back, feeling all warm and fuzzy inside because Jewel smiled at me and acknowledged my presence. Then I requested "Race Car Driver" which she played the third song in. I don't know whether she was gonna play it anyway but when she did she nodded at my and cracked a grin in my direction, I was three rows of people back from the stage, a little to her right. I pointed back and at the end of the song called out a thanks. All in all the set was rather impressive if a bit short. She looked amazing in her tight dark navy top and corduroys with her tan and blonde hair and blue guitar. She is also a very expressive singer with body language and facial expressions. Highlights were: Pieces of You becuase of the great interaction with the crowd. Race Car Driver because I requested it and it rocked. God's Gift to Women with the great story about the guy who picked her up and asked her to show him her tits, she dedicated the song to "that mother fucker." Who Will Save Your Soul sounded ten times better than in the album or video and I like that version a lot, but this version was so much more emotionally charged. Chime Bells was a fun way to close the short forty five to fifty minute set. After she left the stage I saw her go to get a drink from the water fountain over head so I went over and stood below her, she was on the second level of the building looking down at me over a railing. I said "Hey Jewel" and she said "hi" and I said that it was a great set and she thanked me for the compliment. I thanked her for "Race Car Driver" and she gave me two thumbs up and said "yeah, I'm glad you liked it." with a big smile on her face. At this point my mind blanked and she turned to leave and said thanks again and bye, and I said, bye Jewel. That's my story hope you enjoyed it. For you Dylan fans, he put in a two hour show, maybe a little over. Highlights were "I Want You," "Masters of War," "Just Like a Woman," "Silvio," "Tangled up in Blue," and "Rainy Day Woman." One was an appearance March 27, 1995 where she performed YWMFM live (this was a FANTASTIC performance). I would donate this to the project, except that I accidentally taped over my copy of it. AARRRGH!!! One was a segment on a show called "The New Music", containing interview clips and performance clips from her C'est What shows in Toronto. I have a stereo copy of this, but it is in SLP mode. And finally, there was a segment on a show on the US version of MuchMusic, called "Break This!". It also contains interview clips and performance clips from her C'est What shows in Toronto. I have a copy of this too, I'm not sure what mode it's in. These last two were both aired in June or July 95. I am reluctant to lend out my master tapes for these, but I just might be persuaded, for these, and some others as well. Of course, this depends a great deal on whether I stay on this list much longer, which is very much in the air right now. I couldnt get to you for a while and I see I missed a little list storm, glad to see an excellent reecovery! Lots of info for you, but first: JEWEL MAY BE COMING TO A VENUE NEAR YOU! Follow the new dates for Jewel's May headline tour. She will not be opening for anyone. Instead an Atlantic artist named Duncan Shieke (whose new CD will be released about the same time) will open for her. This is the tentative routing. Which means most are confirmed but its always subject to change. Especially the later dates. As you know a tour can change at any time, but most of these will stay as is: date city/state venue 3 May San Fran, CA Great American 4 LA, CA John Anson Ford 5 Phoenix, AZ 7 Boulder, CO Fox Theatre 10 Minneapolis, MN First Avenue 11 Chicago, IL Metro 12 Grand Rapids, MI Intersection 13 Toronto, ONT Opera House 14 Cleveland, OH Odeon 16 New York, NY Irving Plaza 17 Washington, DC 9:30 Club 18 Boston, MA Paradise 19 Philadelphia, PA Theatre Living Arts 21 Sea Bright, NJ Tradewinds 22 Pittsburgh, PA Metropol 24 Atlanta, GA Cotton Club 25 Tampa, FL Radio show/festival 26 Miami, FL Squeeze 27 Orlando, FL Sapphire Supper Club 29 Charlotte, NC Tremont Music Hall 30 Raliegh, NC The Grove 31 Philadelphia, PA Radio show/fest Jun1 Washington, DC " Jun 2 Dallas, TX " ------------------------------ From: Hiranya@aol.com Date: Sun, 14 Apr 1996 18:04:51 -0400 Subject: answers to questions Hiranya here: There have been a lot of questions, here are a few answers: Jewel's name is J.E.W.E.L. No middle. Last is Kilcher. There was a short time at Interlochen when she played around with the spelling of her name in high school like a lot of kids do. But on her birth certificate its Jewel. Jewel is her moms middle name and her maternal grandfathers middle name. St. Mary's: someone got the info to you, but I thot Id add that when something is very out of line on the routing it means it was unavoidable and usually means that Jewel flys there for a special request such as college or radio or festival. Playboy: No chance, not even. Sorry but there will be no apologies to you Brett!:) Info on new appearances on radio, tv, print when in a town: This is the hardest area for us to track and report. Sorry, weve sort of given up, it all comes to us now through her tour manager and is very last minute, much of it isnt even passed on cuz its just too difficult so you often report before we hear. Atlantic handles all of this and does the scheduling with Jewel's tour manager so we dont have to deal with it which is a huge relief cuz its a ton of work! Buchnn? Dole? These references are just a little political cynicism from Jewel. Jewel will be in People magazine sometime in the next 2-3 weeks so browse for it. I think there is something in Billboard Magazine on her now, an interview with her record company president and stuff. Meeting Jewel at Dylan: pretty unlikely. Especially if you want to see Dylan. For the dates that she opens for him security is VERY tight. No back stage passes, and she doesnt stay through his set The only chance would be to catch her heading for her van from backstage not long after her set. This varies from show to show. Acting. Jewel has had numerous movie offers and recently several auditions. She is making quite an impression. Not sure if any parts she had been offered will be accepted, right now music is the big focus. I'll keep you posted. Tori, Sting, her own tour: There has been no discussion of Jewel going out with Tori. There is a record lable paranoia about women opening for other women--like it would be a competi- tion, one would show the other up. Pretty silly mostly. Some artist are beginning to disregard this thought. But anyway we havent approach Tori's people nor have they approached us to pair the two. There is talk of possible fall dates with Sting, nothing firm. More as I know more. Jewel is going out on her own headliner tour May 3 thru June 2. After that she is going to be in the studio recording! BY THE WAY: It is confirmed that Jewel's headlining tour will be with a band. She is choosing them as we speak! He was chosen because: 1) he is very versital (cant spell it but I know what it meanz!) and that is what the new CD will be. 2) he really a good person 3) he and Jewel hit it off. A bit of what he has produced: Indigo Girls (first one I think) Suicidal Tendencies (I liked 'Asleep at the Wheel') Queensryche Musical Youth Mik Kershaw October Project and for Nanci Griffith the ones which included the songs 'southbound train' and 'going back to georgia'.
