First, Tori: "> she doesn't seem > real and true like some other brutally honest songwriters > (example: tori amos) Well, she's doing something different. Tori is a confessional writer, and like the confessional poets, her subject is her own life. That seems by definitition "real and true". Jewel focuses her subject matter differently, and writes a lot of dramatic monologues, using someone else's voice. I love Tori's music, but am not looking for any imitators of her confessional style--it's too easy to get it wrong and become totally self-indulgent. The mainstream rock press already think Tori is too self-indulgent." While it is true that jewel does something different than tori... Tori does write a lot about her internal turmoil. You are SO right that the media believes tori is too self indulgent... There are only a few songs that are really autobiographical that she does. Obviously Me and A Gun is something special that i don't think anyone has ever or will ever replecate. Anyway tori, being my favorite artist needs to have justice done to her... Her music is great and i't not at all done from her POV. Listen to Little Amsterdam, And Not the Red Baron for the most stark examples of this... I also read this: "Like I posted before. Jewel as Death in a Sandman movie (based on the comic book. I love it. And the new miniseries. Wow. Peachy keen)." And Tori as Delirium :) Neil is good friends with tori... James wrote about Jessica: "Everyone who is a Jewel fan loves this song." I am quite sure it was not your intention but it makes it seem like you can't be a fan if you have never heard it. I have only heard it a few times and it is growing on me... Steve Ito wrote: "I guess with Jewel's explosion of popularity it was just a matter of time before a whole new audience of Jewel afficionados swarmed the list, bringing with them a whole new set of agendas to discuss that are totally at odds with ours. Which is OK if that's what you guys want to discuss, the list belongs to all of us old and new, but I think you'll find a lot of the founding members are just not interested anymore." Steve you can feel how you feel of course. But i just wanted to point out that this post seemed a bit arrogant, with the us and them type ideas... She is now famous for her journals but used to be somewhat of a biographer, writing books on the likes of DH Lawrence and many others. Amid the turmoil of the list, which I have faith will clear up, I'm hoping my message will be noticed and not just skipped over. I'm working on a Jewel page though it won't be up for a couple months since I'll be upgrading to a better server with 10 times the page space. Anyway, it's going to include stories about how Jewel's songs came about, etc. At the moment, I only have three of these stories. I'm hoping that some of you fine, caring souls out there might have or remember some stories that go with some of her songs. If I use them, I might have to edit them for clarity, etc. Wish me luck with the page. I think that both Tori Amos and Jewel Kilcher create personae for their songs -- but they are personae based on the two women's real experiences. And I suspect that even Amos sometimes creates a story that's very remote from her own life, although she does it less frequently than Kilcher. > I love Tori's music, but am not looking for any imitators of her > confessional style--it's too easy to get it wrong and become > totally self-indulgent. The mainstream rock press already think Tori > is too self-indulgent." That's a very Arnoldian/Tennysonian notion: "Break away from oneself." I don't think it's an accusation that's entirely fair, though. The self is an artist's most powerful and most lucid model for writing and I don't find it a crime to dwell on the self. But after years of writing, publishing, teaching writing, editing a literary magazine and judging writing awards, etc. I do think it's a crime (well, at least a disservice) how many young writers/musicians are led to believe that just because they feel something passionately and it's "true" that makes it a good piece of writing. It's all in the ability to make your experience come alive for your listener/reader. For my money Tori and Jewel do, but they are the exceptions--which is why they're so very good. Writing out of the self is one thing but it's all too easy to get stuck there. Fictionalizing the experience is one way to get the kind of perspective that can make it sharable & bearable. And trying to write from another person's perspective can be one of the best learning experiences a person can have as a writer and a human both. That is one of the reason why I do think Jewel's writing abilities arae mature beyond her years. - --Neile ------------------------------ From: rjk1@cs.wustl.edu (Bob Kollmeyer) Date: Thu, 11 Apr 1996 13:56:10 -0500 Subject: Re: Where is St Mary's Missouri > Anybody have any further info?
