They had an affair that recently became famous and Hollywoodized in a movie called _Henry and June_, starring Uma Thurman as June, Henry Miller's wife. The movie was based on a book describing the relationships (because there were relationships between all three members in the triangle) taken from Anais Nin's journals. Anais Nin is famous for her journals more than anything, but also for supporting herself by writing soft porn for $1 a page. She also wrote several volumes of dreamy, stream-of-conscious fiction. Henry Miller is famous for writing really hard-nosed books about prostitutes and hard drinking and hard living. The books for many years were banned in the U.S. even though Miller was an American. Their relationship, at least according to the diaries, was very intense. Probably more than you wanted to know, but there it is. - --Neile ------------------------------ From: rjk1@cs.wustl.edu (Bob Kollmeyer) Date: Wed, 10 Apr 1996 22:03:53 -0500 Subject: Re: Where is St Mary's Missouri Ronnie Romero writes: > Hey all... > > Pardon my lack of geographical knowledge but my friend and I would really > like to make it to St. Mary's for the World Carnival... (Not because I've _ever_ heard of the place, but because I have a map of Missouri 8) ) It is a small town right on the Mississippi, off of I55, about 1/2 - 2/3 of the way to Cape Girardeau from St. Louis (which should put it about 70 miles or so south-southeast of St. Louis. Definately within Jewelrange if I can get off work and FIND OUT MORE!!! Anybody have any further info? A phone number, a time, a complete band list, anything? I suspect a folk-based festival based on the area (not exactly Seatle... 8) ), but could be wrong. As this town probably isn't more than 5000 people, perhaps not even half that, I _doubt_ the have a tourism bureau. 8) psyched, bob ------------------------------ From: pjk@cybercom.net (pjk) Date: Wed, 10 Apr 1996 23:14:14 -0400 Subject: VH1 Duets I just watched VH1 duets and was a little disappointed. I don't particularly care for Melissa Etheridge (I didn't realize it was going to be her and some one else in each song). She doesn't has a great singing voice, but her voice is very powerful and she seemed to drown out her partner in each of the songs (esp. Jewel who I was watching for). Anyway, the point was going to be this does anyone know if VH1 taped other duet show possibly with the same artists just in different combinations (i.e. Jewel and Joan Osborne, Jewel and Paula Cole, Joan Osborne and Paula Cole, etc.) to be aired on a later date? pjk - -- "I weep for the death of the spirit and the soul." - Tom Servo ------------------------------ From: Linus Gelber Date: Wed, 10 Apr 1996 23:27:45 -0400 (EDT) Subject: Henry Miller and Anaias Nin On Wed, 10 Apr 1996, jeffrey peterson wrote: > I know this was discussed a couple months ago, but can someone please tell > me who Henry Miller and Anais Nin are? Henry Miller is a major literary figure of the 50's and later, author of "Tropic of Cancer," "Tropic of Capricorn," and the trilogy "Sexus," "Plexus" and "Nexus," which I may have listed in the wrong order. He was one of the early novelists to employ rampantly offensive language, scatology and endless (and toxic) sex in place of plot; I would never want to underestimate his power in throwing open the doors of fiction-- certainly Salinger, Pynchon, Gaddis, Barth and many others could not have done their work without him--but I can't stand his stuff, which I find nattery and pretty dull. Miller lived and worked in Paris for much of his life, and my high point with him was flinging "Tropic of Cancer" into the Seine late one night after I'd finally slogged my way through it. I'd never done that with a book before, and it felt great. I forget which bridge I was on. Anaias Nin is an erotic writer and diarist; her two collections "Delta of Venus" and "Little Birds" have, for some reason, crept into college curricula in the last decade or so. They're not bad, but not great; she can be very self-conscious and strained, to my taste. Her endless diaries, some 9 volumes, make more interesting reading, but are ultimately a lot of the same. She and Miller were torrid lovers for a long time, which was the worst-kept secret on the Continent for ages; Americans figured it out much later. She had the sort of tragic sexual life that we so love to hear about these days, but which was normally kept under wraps at the time. Keep in mind that lots of people love this stuff. I don't, which doesn't mean boots to a toad in the grander scheme. For better-written and more sexually-charged Paris writing of the period, I say look to Laurence Durrell (esp. "Tunc" and "Nunquam," collected as "The Revolt of Aphrodite," and the exceptional Alexandria Quartet, "Justine," "Balthazar," "Mountolive" and "Clea," which MUST BE READ IN ORDER). Whoops, back to Jewel.
