Bob who?) >-----------------s a b r a r i c h a r d s o n b e d d e s----------------- Maybe it's just me.. don't really think so, though.. Certainly, what I'm hearing there is strictly in the music, the lyrics are nothing alike, nor are the vocals.. but EVERYTIME I listen to little sister I hear an echo of For Emily in my mind.. similarity of pacing, tonal qualities.. Of course, part of this is just a usual reaction to a new artist that I really like.. geez, I haven't been listening to her for a week, yet.. so, naturally, my mind is jumping to 'quantify, qualify, and register' this new unknown thing against known things.. other music.. so, her 'damn you man, don't leave me' from 'Painters' hits me, sounding incredibly like Cher (which is cool.. I've not much liked her music, but I love Cher's voice.) The opening of Near You Always keeps reminding me of a Jim Croce song, but I can't remember what it was called... just little impressions, but striking to me.. Normally, with someone new, they're just kinda background music, till I become somewhat familiar with the music, and certain songs begin to 'bridge' to my conciousness.. but sometimes, someone new won't stay in the background like that, rather insisting that they be listened to! Tori was like that, stopping me from listening to any other music for some little time till I'd at least begun to get to know her... and it's seeming the same with Jewel, only more so, because the range and scope of both her songs and her vocal delivery are so broad... kinda hard to accept that all these different songs are being sung by the same girl, yet they are.. so, I've been kind of force feeding myself (yeah, like I had to twist my arm :), listening to her again and again, over and over, more amazed each time.. and I guess my mind plays tricks a bit, jumping on both the striking and the vague similarities between her stuff and that of others.. Most of this will drop away, though, as I get to know her better, which isn't going to take long, at this rate.. No one I've run across has grabbed me the way she does, sheesh.. there I went again, totally lost, entranced by Adrien... she's incredible So far, I think, my favorite song(s)... a toss up between Painters and Little Sister...they both hit me really deep, Painters because i lost someone really close last year, Little Sister because I'm in recovery, and I've watched friends fighting, and losing..and dying.. - --- Jim Atanasoff karliss@fred.net jatanasoff@aol.com http://www.fred.net/karliss/home.html ------------------------------ From: ska4me@primenet.com (Scott Hamilton) Date: Sat, 6 Apr 1996 08:47:09 -0700 (MST) Subject: "new music," hunh so there i was, driving down the freeway on a perfect southern california day. mid-80's, got the sunroof open, wind blowing in my hair. and then i hear on the radio--i was listening to kroq at the time, but don't ask my why--this HUGE explosion of electronics, followed by the announcement, "NEW MUSIC . . . FEATURING: JEWEL!" oh, cool, methinks. nice day, nice drive, and now i'm gonna hear some good music. and to top it all off, they're gonna play a "new" track. neat. except it wasn't. after all that buildup, it was, of course, wwsys. NEW MUSIC? um, excuse me, but i'm pretty sure the single's going on two years old. so what's up with that? some "alternative," that kroq. geez. is it always this way, or are their really commercial stations out there that aren't afraid to go out on a limb and actually play something different? feeling discouraged, scott ps--and mark my words, in a tour or two from now, when she's really big, kroq will have their van at the shows claiming that they broke her. i've seen it happen too many times. I first heard "Who Will Save Your Soul" when it premeired as a video on VH-1. I thought it was interesting and I had heard rumors of her touring with my favorite singer of all time... Liz Phair. Anyway, I bought the album "Pieces Of You" because I began falling in love with "Who Will Save Your Soul". Now, several months later, I've listened to the entire album several times and I love it more that I ever have. My favorite songs? I love "Angel Standing By", "Daddy", "I'm Sensitive", "Little Sister", "Foolish Games", and "Pieces Of You". I think the most attractive feature that Jewel brings to her music is the purity and sweetness in her voice and the bluntness in many of her lyrics. I admire her ambition and I'm almost proud of her, even though I've never met her. A little about me? Okay... real name: Yeah, like I need a stalker. location: Vacaville, CA (Near SF and Sacramento) age: 19 other musical interests: Liz Phair Tori Amos Elastica Sarah McLachlan Jewel Sophie B. Well, I hope to stay a member of the mailing list for as long as I think it's beneficial to it's members and of course, Jewel. Although I don't know how truly beneficial it could be to Jewel, but knowing she's got so many fans could definitely make her feel good...
