The show sealed it. >Feel free to make comments too, especially if you first encountered Jewel >through something else. I heard her the week the album was released, and was one of the first people on this list. I also discovered the Ecto mailing list because of Jewel, which has turned me onto all kinds of other great artists, so she's made a pretty signifigant impact on the music I've been listening to in general over the past year. By the way, you'd have to be blind or dead not to notice how pretty she is, but I was captivated by her music without having ever seen her first. Amanda Marshall ranks as one of my all-time favorite female performers, along with Jewel. Her style is much different though. I had the delight of seeing her play small club shows in Toronto for a couple years when she was unsigned and belting out blues covers with incredible passion, in a style somewhere between Janis Joplin and Joe Cocker. She released an album in the fall that is just coming out in the U.S. now (or maybe even 1st of May). Unfortunately (in my opinion), some corporate producers and songwriters got their hands into it, and it turned out to be a very safe, highly-produced collection of mainstream, radio-friendly pop songs. It's not what she was about when I would 2 drive hours in any direction to see her. So it's hard to recommend the album, knowing that she's capable of so much more, but some of you might still like it. She has a spectacular voice and power, the songs certainly are accessible, and her live performances are still breathtaking. I highly recommend you do not miss the show if she comes around your town. In this case, live is definitely better than Memorex. (longish) Whoo.. what a stack of messages to wade through (HD crashes are not fun) but here's my universal generic reply to everyone who bothers to read my ramblings. Am I the only one that thinks Jewel isn't "all that" in the physical appearance category? *dons asbestos underwear* Yes, she is a very beautiful person in many ways but when it comes to "lookers" there are many others I could drool over before Jewel. She's attractive, yes, but many people are attractive in their own personal way but when it comes to knock-out, super model, Claudia Schiefer good looks Jewel's not like that. However Jewel is beautiful in a very natural earth-grown sense. Her beauty is the beauty of waking up early in the morning and walking out the front door to face the sun sitting just over the horizon, a strong chill wind tossing your hair into your face and rattling the old pump and breathing in pure artic air. It's not exactly the face of the Guess girl, but there's beauty there nonetheless. I'm still in love with her (what guy, and some girls on this list aren't?) but her looks have nothing to do with it. Now, how many of you again have been chided for being in love with Jewel? *laugh* I watched the Wizard of Oz on Christmas day with my whole family there. Of course, they'd never heard of Jewel except my mother who was teasing me to no end when I recieved Rare Angels and was very happy (well, maybe a little more). So I got more of the same on Christmas but ohwell, I also watch cartoons religiously -- we're all allowed our obsessions are we not? Ohyeah, whoever's keeping track, I'm a twenty year-old guy. As for me, it was her voice that hooked me. Specifically, she did an in-house performance at the radio station here (WHFS's Just Passing Through) and the first song was WWSYS (ho-hum) then they played Angel Standing By. For starters I have a bit of a thing for angel stories thanks to an ex of mine, but when she started reaching higher and higher my jaw dropped and I literally froze being entranced by this marvelous voice. Then she later sang Don't and that convinced me to find out more. I didn't even know how to spell her name (thought it might be "Joule" or something) so I jumped over to Lycos and searched for Jewel/Joule and music and found the Atlantic page and Colin's page. So I then got to see her and was attracted to her natural look. When I later saw those "glam-shots" I hated them. But I wasn't really excited about pics, she was good looking, yeah, but no knock-out. So looking around some more I read some lyrics and that's what made me sign up to the list and try to grab everything I could on her. Of course, I'm a writer myself (who isn't?) so that's no surprise. And that is the one thing I like above all in her music, it's poetry. And her somewhat non-standard techniques I just love, esp. in Painters. Painters is my favorite song, so far. But when I first heard PoY what really struck me was Amen, which is my favorite album cut. Painters on the album is too slow; the version on Rare Angels is much better and my favorite song (along with Cold Song). But I finally bought PoY a few weeks ago (I confess, I waited until it appeared in a used CD store, but I did buy the $8 one over the slightly worse quality $5 one). SO I've been blasting my ears with it and my favorite song off it is Amen and then Little Sister. I do very much like Near You Always and it was my third favorite but recently Foolish Games has really moved on me. And I also very much like Adrian even if I'm the only one (nyah!) But there is one less-than-marvelous song (well, maybe YWMFM too, but...) and it's WWSYS. I can't really like that song as much as all her others. It's grown on be but I just can't get into it. Has anyone else noticed how no two Jewel songs are quite the same. Is there no limit to the extent of her talent? (I hope not.) I've been doing things with alternate genders in my writing lately. Not really for any purpose or to specifically not write as a man, but just to nudge myself in a different direction and see where it ends up taking me. I find it easiest when I just write and not try to restrict myself to a specific speaker model. If I try to write something just from a male perspective or just from a female perspective I find that harder. But thanks in part to Jewel I've started to just open myself up and pull from any side there is -- male, female, homosexual, black, jew, racist, liberal, alien, whatever. What I've found is that everyone really is "pieces of me." Some more than others but even when I completely disagree with something that disagreement is a reflection of that viewpoint in me and I can utilize that in my writings. Kim, you pciked up PoY after just glancing over the song titles?? Could you give me six numbers, I think I'll try that lottery thing. Jewel and Tori in a fight? hmm... I think Tori is the more physical of the two. Still I'd hate to see Jewel get mad at someone (Jewel, angry.... yeah, right). All those flames... whoah, who's got the marshmallows? I have a general rule about writing messages. If I'm not smiling when I write something, I don't send it. Because if I'm not smiling when I write it, you won't be smiling when you read it. :-) I can't stand any of the overdubbing on PoY, it just seems to mask her voice and interfere with it. Jewel's voice is good enough it doesn't need any help. Those songs are just mixed so wrong. If someone like Brian Eno did it however.... hmm, Jewel and Brian Eno. Now that's something I'd pay good to hear. And which is worse, me writing all of this or you actually reading all of this? I think we're equally obsessed. - --- etienne@ahoynet.com -- http://www.ahoynet.com/~etienne/home.html ## All opinions expressed are yours; you have only yourself to blame. ## ------------------------------ From: Neile Graham Date: Fri, 5 Apr 1996 09:00:27 -0800 (PST) Subject: "Brett M.
